This invention relates to an improvement in or for writing devices having two writingvmembers arranged in a tube, which can be moved alternatively into their writing position, each of the writing members being equipped with an ink container.
In known writing devices, the writing members move only in the longitudinal direction, without changing their places in the tube.Y The aperture for the writing members is' dimensioned with a cross section equal to the combined crosssection of the two writing members, consequently the writing Vmembers could not be securely held along the whole of their periphery. A further disadvantage is that when either of the two members is moved forward intov its writing position, it is located on one side of the central longitudinal plane, so that by changing the writing members the writing device has to be turned through 180 in the hand.
All those disadvantages have been overcome by this .present invention according to which the aperture for the writing members in the tube is so dimensioned as to et closely round the section of the-writing member, a guiding surface being thus formed, and -the alternate forward movement of the writing members into the writingl position is effected along a commonaxis.
The accompanying drawing shows one form of the writing device as carried out according to this invention. y

The tube I is provided with an eccentrically shaped aperture 2 through kwhich either of the two writing members 3 or 4 can be pushed to assume Writing position. The aperture is so dimensioned and shaped, that the respective end of each ofthe writing members, when' in the position for writing, is completely encircled all around and guided by the wall defining aperture 2. In yorder to hold the writing member, which has been pushed forward Vinto writing position, securely in this position, the wall of aperture 2 and the part of the writing member when placed in the aperture are defined by conical surface sections.' An ordinary pen 3 and a ball point pen 4 are arranged in the tube of this writing device. The two writing members 3 and 4 are fixed in the usual way in the tapered end of the ink containers 6 and 1, of semicircular section, the two fiat sides of the said containers abutting each other. The rear parts 6 and 'I' of the containers, which are of reduced cross section, are located at the rear end of the tube I having a larger space, and are encircled by a rotatable bushing 8, which is held in the tube I by means of a pin 20 and a circular groove 2|. The end of the bushing 8 protrudes beyond the tube I and is covered by a cap 9, firmly fixed to this bushing, the cap 9 serving to rotate the bushing 8. The cylindrical outer surfaces of the rear parts 6 and 'I' of the ink containers are provided with helical grooves II) and II respectively, converging toward each other, each of which embraces an arc of 180, both ends of these helical grooves in the retracted positions of the ink containers meeting at a common point (see Fig. 4). In the wall of the bushing 8 a ball I9 is fixed which engages at the forward junction 22 of the two grooves I0 andV II.
Each Vof the cylindrical surfaces of the two ink containers is provided with a Vgroove I6a and I6b, respectively, of semicircular cross section running along the central line in the axial direction of the curved surface.v Two transverse grooves, I2, I3 and I4, I5, respectively, each encompassing an arc of are cut in the center and at the front end Vof the cylindrical surface of the ink containers 6 and 1, joining the grooves IIa and I6b at right angles, the pair of central grooves I2, I4, and the pair of end grooves I3, I 5, each completing a semicircle on opposite sides of the centrallongitudinal plane of the writing device. In the wall of the tube4 I .are located two.
balls I'I and I8 in the central middle plane and diametrically opposite one another, so that in the retracted position of both writing members shown in Fig. 4, the ball I8 is at the front end of the groove Iia of the ink container 6 and is aligned with transverse, end grooves I3, I5, and the ball I'I is at, the middle of the groove IIib of the ink container 1, and is aligned with transverse, middle grooves I2, I4.
By means of this arrangement of the balls and grooves, which are the guiding means of the writing device, when the bushing 8 is rotated through to the right (clockwise as viewed in Fig. 3)', since the containers 6 and 'I are prevented from rotating by the ball I8 engaging the wall of the longitudinal groove I 6a opposite groove VI3 and since ball I9 fixed to bushing 8 engages helical slot I Il, the container 6 is moved forwards in a longitudinal direction and the writing member 3 is moved forward to project from the tube I.
Upon reversing the rotation of the bushing 8, rotation of the containers and 1 is at iirst prevented by the ball IB, which is engaged in the groove Ilia, until the container 6 yand the cross groove I2 have been brought into their initial position; that is, until they have been screwed back so that the groove I3 faces the ball I8. On the bushing 8 being rotated another 180' to theleft, the balls I8 and I'I engage respectively with the pairs of grooves I3, I5 and Hf, H, the pairs of grooves being then aligned viz-ith the balls i8 and I1, respectively, and rotation of the two ink4 containers 6 and 'I takes place. As a resuitfof the rotation an exchange of the position of the two ink containers 6 and l takes place and in; consequence also of the two writing members in the tube I. On reversing the rotation of bushing 8', theink container "I is rst screwed back, as it is prevented from rotating by the bail IB engaging 'in the groove IGb. On continuing the rotation, the process of turning and the forward motion ofthe other writing member occurs.
To fill the container 6 with ink, a plunger l2H operated by a screw-threaded piston 2T, having a head 28,v is provided', las indicated in the drawing. Access to the part 28" ofthe filling device may be had by removal 'of the capY 9, which lis replaced after the lling operation. Some other known system may be used as weli for 'li'ing Suitable known organs, not shown, can aiso be provided for ii'll-ing theballpoint pen 4, 1. This Writing device can be fitted with ltwo ordinary pens or two ball point pens filled with diiferent inks.
By means of 'this'improvement of a writing device mere rotational movement causes a change of the writing members, which are moved forwards'aiong their-'common longitudinal axis; also, in the case vof two pens being provided, each pen is caused to Vmove forward into its right position and securely held in the aperture of the writing device..
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as. new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
1k A vwriting instrument comprising a tubular housing having a `iront end provided with an. aperturepa pair. of..writing elements insaid hous-Y ing, each of the` elements having a sliding surface, said sliding suriacesabutting against each other.. an operating structure rotatably Yconnected to said housing. and engaging -both. of, said elements, each of said elements being. .adapted to assume a-retractedposition inside of the housing or an extended position iniwhich 'an-end4 of the respectivev element vprojects through the aperture, eachoi the writing elements having ,a v.set of grooves. consisting, of a helicalV groove, a coaxial groove and a pair of circumferential grooves. the coaxial and circumferential .grooves communieating with one another, means on the operating structure selectively cooperating with the helical grooves to advance and retract the writing elements, a projection in the housing co-operating with the co-axial and circumferential grooves of one of the writing elements to prevent rotation of said element while said element is located in a position with its-forward part proiected out of the housing, a second projection in thehousing for preventing rotative movement of the other `writing element While the latter element is in positiuxn' with its forward part projected out of the housing, said projections being simultaneously registi-able with the circumferential grooves in the writing elements when both the said writing elements are in a retracted position 'in thehousingwhereby said writing elements can then-be rotated Within the housing.
