to respectively engage the retractor lugs 48 (Figs. 10 and 11). This roll-back 52 is held from axial movement by being positioned between the abutting end of the outer knob spindle 26 and a shoulder 51 in the inner knob spindle 28 (Fig. 12).
The outer roll-back 50 has its hub mounted to slide in the inner end portion of the spindle of the outer knob spindle 26 with the projecting arms thereof extending through elongated slots 59 in the inner end portion of said spindle.
In accordance with the invention, the latch is further provided with a dead locking rod 58 which extends axially through the knob spindles, and through central apertures in the roll- backs 50 and 52. This rod 58 is mounted to slide freely through the roll-back 52, but is held from axial movement with relation to the outer roll-back 50 by means of projections 50 on the rod adjacent one side of the roll-back, and a suitable clip 62 detachably secured about the rod having its inner end arranged adjacent the outer side of the roll-back 59. The inner end of the rod 53 is in the form of a push button 64 which extends through a guiding aperture in the outer wall of the inner knob 24.
The outer end of the dead-locking rod 58 is reduced in diameter and extends into a guiding sleeve 63, the outer end of which embraces an inwardly directed flange surrounding an aperture E8 in the outer side of the outer knob. A spring '10 is coiled about the sleeve 86 and is interposed between the flanged outer end of the sleeve and a collar 12 on the reduced portion of the rod 53, the spring thus tending to press the rod in a direction to project the push button 64.
With the dead-locking rod 58 in its released position as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, the outer rollback 58 is arranged adjacent the roll-back 52, and upon turning either knob in either direction its roll-back acts through the retractor to retract the latch bolt.
Upon shifting the rod 58 by depressing the push button 64, the outer roll-back D is'shifted outwardly to position the arms thereof in slots M in the spindle bushing l6 of the housing (Fig.
11), thus dead-locking the outer knob. The
dead-locking rod 58 and the roll-back 5B are held iii this position by engagement of the arms of the roll-back with rounded projections '16 on the retractor lugs 48, the retractor spring 46 permitting the arms of the roll-back 50 to snap over the projections 16 when the push button is depressed.
When the door is closed and the outer knob is thus dead-locked, upon turning the inner knob to retract the latch bolt and open the door, the retracting movement of the bolt-retractor releases the projections 16 from the roll-back 50, whereupon the spring acts to shift the rod 58 into its released position, thus moving the roll-back 50 out of the dead-locking slots 14 and releasing the outer knob.
The dead-locking means may also be released 24', knob spindles 26' and 28' that extend into opposite ends of a bushing 16', a bolt retractor 44' having laterally extending lugs 48, roll-backs 50' and 52 respectively connected with the outer and inner knob spindles, a dead locking rod 58', and rounded projections 16' on said retractor lugs 48. Except as hereinafter described these parts may be the same in construction and mode of operation as the corresponding parts of the lock above described.
The dead locking rod 58 of this form, instead of being pressed inwardly by means of a spring 10 at the outer end of the rod, has a spring 80 coiled about the rod and interposed between a collar 82 on the rod and a shoulder in the inner knob spindle 28'.
The outer end of the rod 58 has secured thereon a cam sleeve 84, the outer end of which has a transverse concave V-shaped cam surface 86. In alinement with this cam surface, is a convex V- shaped camsurface 88 formed on the end of a cam sleeve 90 which is secured on the inner end of a key-operable plu 92 of a cylinder lock 94.
This lock 94 is mounted in the outer knob 22'.
The outer end of the cylinder is mounted in a groove in the rim of a key opening in the outer wall of the knob, and the inner end of the cylinder is mounted in the outer end of the outer knob spindle 2B, the margin of the inner end of the cylinder abutting a flange 96 on the inner end of the spindle.
The projections 16' may be formed on the ends of a spring-pressed plunger 98, instead of being rigid with the bolt retractor. Also, instead of the outer roll-back being held from outward movement by the clip 62, a sleeve 10!! is interposed between the roll lxack and the cam sleeve 84.
With this construction, upon depressing the push-button on the inner end of the dead-locking rod to lock the door, the cam surface 86 in the sleeve 84 is shifted into engagement with the cam surface 88 on the cam sleeve 99.
In case of emergency if it is desired tounlock the door from the outside, upon turning the cylinder plug by means of a key, the engaging cam surfaces 86 and 88 serve to shift the deadlocking rod 58 inwardly,- thus releasing the outer knob spindle to permit the knob to be turned to retract the latch bolt. Upon turning the key plug to its initial key removal position, the deadlocking rod may beagain shifted'by its pushbutton to lock the outer knob. s v
In order to prevent turning of the dead-locking rod 58 during shifting thereof by means of the key plug, a washer 10! is located in a recess in the inner knob spindle 28' adjacent the inner roll-back 52. This Washer is provided with laterally projecting' lugs lfilthat are received in by inserting a pin or other suitable implement 18 through the aperture 68 in the outer knob and forcing the rod inwardly to cause the arms of the outer roll-back 50 to ride over the projections 16, and thus permitting the spring 10 to move the rod into released position.
In case the push-button 64 is accidentally depressed so as to dead-lock the outer knob, the depression of the latch upon closing the door effects release of the outer roll-back 50 and thus release of the dead-locking means.
The modified form shown in Figs. 14, 15 and 16 is provided with outer and inner knobs 22' and openings in the spindle, so as to' hold thewasher from turning relatively to the spindle; The washer is provided with a square aperture through which the dead-locking rod extends, so as to prevent turning of the rod but permitting axial movement thereof ,7 This construction does not prevent turning the inside knob when button is depressed; and outside knob is, locked. In a latch of the class described, the combination of a latch housing having a recess, inner and outer knobs each having'a spindle mounted to turn in said housing, a latch bolt, a bolt retractor, a roll-back connected with each knob spindle whereby upon turning either knob its roll-back acts through the retractor to retract the latch bolt, a deadlocking rod arranged axially of the knob spindles with one end projecting through an aperture in the inner knob, the propecting end forming -a pushbutton, a spring tending to move the rod in a directionto-project said push button, said rod having means for holding the roll-back associated with the outer knob from axial movement with relation thereto whereby upon depressing said push button to move said rod against said spring, said roll-back associated with the outer knob is moved into said recess in the latch housing to lock the outer knob from turning movement, and means for yieldingly holding said outer roll-back and said rod in said dead-locking position.

In a latch of theclass described, the combination of a latch housing, inner and outer knobs each having a spindle 'mounted to turn in said housing, a latch bolt, connections between the latch bolt and each of'said spindles whereby upon turning either knob the latch bolt-may be retracted, a dead-locking rod extending axially of said spindles having one end projecting through an aperture in the inner knob, aspring tending to move said rod inwardly with respect to the door, the outer knob having an aperture in alinement with'said'rod, and connections between said rod and said outer spindle whereby upon moving said rod outwardly with respect to the door said outer spindle is dead-locked, releasable means for holding the rod in said position against the tension of said spring, and upon moving said rod in the opposite direction said spindle is released, said rod being adapted to be thus moved outwardly 'by pressing on said projecting end thereof, and to be moved in the opposite direction by means of a suitable imple-- ment inserted through said aperture in the outer knob and into engagement with the adjacent end of the rod.

In a'lat'ch of the class described, the combination of a latch housing, inner and outer knobs each having a spindlamoun'ted to turn'in said housing, a latch bolt, a bolt retractor, a roll-back connected with each knob spindle whereby upon turning either knob its roll-back acts through the retractor to retract the latch bolt, the roll-back associated with the outer knob spindle being adapted to be shifted axially into and out of locking engagement with the latch housing, whereby when in engagement wtih the latch housing said outer spindle is dead-locked and when disengaged from the housing said outer spindle is released, means accessible from the inside of the door for thus shifting said outer roll-back into locking engagement with said housing, and a spring tending to shift the outer roll-back in the, opposite direction, said outer roll-back and said bolt-retractor having portions adapted to engage in abutting relation when said outer roll-back is in said dead-locking position to hold said outer roll-back in said position against the tension of said spring and so arranged that upon movement of said retractor to retract the latch bolt said spring acts to release the outer roll back tron; lockilleengag ent with saidhousing. In a latch of the classdesc ibed. the 291 1: bination of a latch housing, inner and outer knobs each having a spindl mounted to. turn in said housing, a latch bolt, a, springepressed bolt retractor, a roll-back connected with each knob spindle whereby upon turning either knob its roll-back acts through the retractor toretract the latch bolt, the roll-hack associated wi h the outer knob and the housing having portions adapted to interlock when engaged and said outer roll-back being adapted to be Shifted axially into and out of locking engagement with the latch housing, whereby when in engagement with the latch housing said outer spindle is deadlocked and when disengaged from the housing said outer spindle is released, means accessible from the inner side of the 01001." for Shifting said outer roll-back into locking engagement with said housing, a springtending to shift the outer roll-back in the oppositedirection, and a pros jection on the retractor arranged in the path of axial movement of said outer roll-back whereby when said outer roll-back is shifted in the firstmentioned direction it depresses and rides over said projection and then said projection serves to hold said outer roll-back in locking engagement with said housingagainst the tension of said spring, the stop being released from the outer roll-back upon movement of t e retractor to retract the latch ,bolt.

In a latch of the class described, the combination of a latch housing, inner and outer knobs eachhaving a spindle mounted to turnin Said housing, a la ch-bolt, abelt re ra tor roll-back connected with each i-knob ,spindle whereby upon turning either knob the roll-back acts through the retractor to retract the latch bolt, a dead-locking rod extending through apertures in said roll-backs having means for holding the roll-back associated with ,the outerknob from axial movement with relation thereto, said rod being movable longitudinally with relation to the rollbackassociated with th inner knob, the outer roll back and said latch l iousing having portions adapted to interlock when engaged, means for moving the locking srod axially in pp site dir ctions to respect ve y posi on the outer roll-back in lockin engagement with the latch housing to hold the 0.1.1128! knolo and its spindle from turnin movementrrand t r lease said outer roll-back iron; the latch hous n t permit the outer knob and its spindle to be turned, and means for holding the locking rod in the positions thus moved comprising a rounded projection on the bolt retractor arranged in the path of said outer roll-back and over which the outer roll-back is adapted to snap during said movements of the dead-locking rod in opposite directions.

In a latch of the class described, the combination of a latch housing, inner and outer knobs each having a spindle mounted to turn in said housing, a latch bolt, a bolt retractor, a roll-back connected with each knob spindle whereby upon turning either knob its roll-back acts through the retractor to retract the latch bolt, a dead-locking rod extending through apertures in said roll-backs, means for holding the roll-back associated with the outer knob from axial movement with relation to said rod, said rod being adapted to be moved longitudinally with relation to the roll-back associated with the inner knob, means accessible from the inner side of the door for moving the locking-rod axially to position the outer roll-back into locking engagement with the latch housing whereby the outer knob is held from turning movement, the outer knob having an aperture in alinement with said locking-rod with its outer end spaced from the outer end of the rod to permit an implement to be inserted through said aperture into engagement with the end of the rod to move the locking-rod axially to release said outer roll-back from locking engagement with the latch housing, and yielding means for releasably holding said outer roll-back in the positions thus axially moved.

In a latch of the class described, the combination of a latch housing, inner and outer knobs each having a spindle mounted to turn in said housing, a latch bolt, a bolt retractor, a roll-back connected with each knob spindle, whereby upon turning either knob its roll-back acts through the retractor to retract the latch bolt, a dead-locking rod extending axially of said knob spindles, means for holding the roll-back associated with the outer knob from axial movement with relation to said rod, said rod being movable longitudinally with relation to the rollback associated with the inner knob, means accessible from the inner side of the door for moving the rod axially to position the outer rollback in looking engagement with the latch housing whereby the outer knob is held from turning movement, the outer knob having an aperture in alinement with said locking-rod with its outer end spaced from the outer end of the rod to permit an implement to be inserted through said aperture into engagement with the end of the rod to move the locking-rod axially to release said outer roll-back from locking engagement with the latch housing, and yielding means for releasably holding said outer roll-back in the positions thus axially moved.

In a latch of the class described, the combination of a latch housing, inner and outer knobs each having a spindle mounted to turn in said housing, a latch bolt, a bolt retractor, a roll-back connected with each knob spindle whereby upon turning either knob its roll-back acts through the retractor to retract the latch bolt, a dead-locking rod extending through apertures in said roll-backs having means for holding the roll-back associated with the outer knob from axial movement with relation thereto, said rod being movable longitudinally with relation to the roll-back associated with the inner knob, means accessible from the inner side of the door for moving the locking-rod axially to position the outer roll-back in looking engagement with the latch housing whereby the outer knob and its spindle are held from turning movement, means for releasably holding the outer roll-back in said position, means acting automatically upon retraction of the latch bolt to move said rod to release said holding means and to move said outer roll-back from looking engagement with the latch housing, a lock cylinder mounted in said outer knob having a key plug in alinement with said dead-locking rod, and cooperating cams on the inner end of said key plug and the outer end of said dead-locking rod whereby when the deadlocking rod is shifted into said dead-lock position upon turning the key plug said cams act to shift the dead-locking rod in a direction to release the outer roll-back from looking engagement with the latch housing and release the outer knob.
9. A look according to claim 8 in which said cams on the key plug and the outer end of the dead-locking rod have transverse concave and convex V-shaped cam surfaces whereby when the dead-locking rod is shifted into said deadlocking position, said surfaces are engaged and upon turning the key plug said surfaces act to shift the dead-locking rod in a direction to release the outer knob.
16. A structure according to claim 1 in which a cylinder lock is mounted in the outer knob having a key plug in alinement with the dead-locking rod, and cooperating cams are provided on the inner end of said key plug and the outer end of said dead-locking rod whereby when said rod is shifted into said dead-locking position upon turning the key plug said cams act to shift the rod in a direction to release said holding means and to move said outer roll-back out of locking engagement with the latch housing.
