Dec. 22, 1953 A- T. RUBANO MOUNTING FOR EASELS Filed Dec. 8, 1950 INVENTOR. I I 2 44.00 7 RUB/7N0 Va/MM Patented Dec. 22, 1953 MOUNTING FOR EASELS Aldo T. Rubano, New York, N. Y.
Application December 8, 1950, Serial No. 199,794
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to a mounting or easels and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
Generally there is provided a novel mounting for easels whereby an easel, sketch. pad or the like may be mounted in a great variety of places and in a maximum of positions. In carrying out the invention there is provided a belt-like clamping member which is adapted to encircle and grip poles, trees or the like and to hold therein in clamped relation to. such poles, trees or the like a base member having a convex inner face for the accommodation of such pole or the like and an outwardly and horizontally extending arm provided with a centrally disposed inwardly extending recess wherein may be locked the screw portion of a bracket member which also forms a part of the invention. A set screw extends through the armand into the recess aforesaid whereby the screw portion mentioned above may be locked in said recess in selected positions. The bracket referred to consists of a U- haped member to the outer side of the bight portion of which is affixed an outwardly extending screw. One of the arms of the U-shaped member has extending laterally therethrough a set screw whereby a sketch pad, palette or the like inserted between the legs of the U-shaped portion may be locked therein by such set screw. It will be readily seen that, if desired, the bracket member may be utilized without the remainnig portions of the invention by merely penetrating the screw portion into a tree stump, pole, tree or the like wherever convenient to the artist or other person utilizing the invention.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a device of the character set forth which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and yet effective and efficient in use. 7
Another object of the invention is the provision of a novel mounting for easels, palettes and the like.
A further object of the invention is the provision, in a device of the character set forth, of novel means for mounting the same upon other objects such as trees, poles and the like.
Another object of the invention is the provision, in a device of the character set forth, of a novel bracket forming a part of the invention.
Another object of the invention is the provision of novel means for receiving and locking in adjusted position a bracket forming a part of the invention.
Other and further objects of the invention become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view, partlylustrating certain elements of the invention,
Figure 4 is a perspective View of a band-like. clamping device utilized inthe invention,
Figure 5 is an elevational view illustrating the device forming the present invention in; use upon. an artists easel.
Figure 6 is an elevational view illustrating howa portion of the device may be mounted upon a tree stump, and
Figure 7 is a view similar to Figure 6 but showing the manner in which a portion cf-thedevice may be mounted upon a pole or the like.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, there is shown therein a mounting for easels comprising a base member generally indicated at H5 and having a vertical arm l I provided with a concave inner face 12 and an integrally formed outwardly extending horizontal arm l3 provided with a centrally disposed inwardly extending recess M. A set screw I5 is threadably mounted in the upper face of the arm [3 and extends into the recess I4.
The vertical arm H is provided with a transversely extending passageway I6 adjacent its outer side and one side of the passageway I6,
3 that is to say the inner side of the passageway I6 is convex in contour, as indicated at 11, while the outer side or outer wall of the passageway I6 is a fiat plane.
The base member ID is adapted to be held in position upon a pole, tree or the leg of an easel, as indicated at I9, by means of a belt-like clamp 263 which is adapted to extend through the passageway I 6 to thereby maintain the concave side I2 of the base 19 against such member IS. The ends of the member 29 overlap in a housing 2| in which is revolubly mounted a shaft 22 the outer end of which is provided with an operating handle 23 and which shaft 22 is provided with screw teeth 24 within the housing 2!. One end of the member 29 is affixed to the housing 21 while the other end thereof provided with a series of spaced transverse openings 25 in which the screw teeth 24 are adapted to engage.
It will be apparent that by manipulation of the handle 23 after the insertion of that end of the member 20 hearing the openings 25 into the housing 2 I, that the screw teeth 24 will act to engage the openings 25 to thereby tighten the band 20 around the object against which the concave face l2 of the base member I may be placed.
There is also provided a bracket member generally indicated at 26 and comprising a U-shaped body having a bight portion 2! and a pair of parallel outwardly extending legs 22 and 29. Centrally affixed to the outer side of the bight portion 21 is a screw 39 provided with an integrally formed collar 3| adjacent the bight portion 27. The arm 28 has threaded therethrough a set screw 32 whose inner end is provided with an enlarged gripping member 33 which is receivable in a recess 34 formed on the inner side of the arm 28.
It will be apparent that the screw 30 may be received in the recess I4 and the arms 28 and 29 moved to any desired angular relation to the arm 13 after which the set screw I may be tightened against the screw 30 to maintain the bracket 26 in such selected position and that thereafter a palette 35 may be inserted between the arms 28 and 29 and the set screw 32 turned until th enlarged gripping member 33 comes into contact with such palette to securely hold the same within the bracket 26. It will also be seen that a platform 36 may be so gripped in the bracket 26, as indicated in Figure 7 of the drawing and that thereafter the platform 35 may be used for the support of, for example, a tool box 31 or for other devices.
Likewise it will be seen that the bracket may be used by itself without the necessity for utilizing the base member H] or the clamping device 20. In such case it will be apparent that the screw 30 may be threaded into, for example, a tree stump 38, as shown in Figure 6, whereupon a sketch pad 39 or the like may be arranged between the arms 28 and 29 of the bracket 25. As shown in Figure 7 of the drawing, the screw 30 may be threaded into a pole 40 whereupon the bail 42 of a paint bucket 43 may be inserted between the arms 28 and 29 whereby to support the bucket.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A device of the character described comprising a base member having a vertical arm and a lateral arm, said vertical arm having a laterally extending passageway therethrough, a clamp extending through said passageway for holding said base member upon pole-like objects, and a bracket removably and adjustably carried by said base member, said vertical arm having a concave inner face, said lateral arm having an inwardly directed recess, a set screw extending through a portion of said lateral arm into said recess, said bracket including a U-shaped member, a set screw extending through one arm of said U- shaped member, and a screw afiixed to the outer side of the bight portion of said U-shaped member and receivable in the recess of said lateral arm, and said passageway having an outer wall having a flat plane surface and an inner wall of convex shape.
