` Application August 21,1951,;Ser-ialnNo,242i8401 *mi* zolaims. (Cri' scribed usually is. approximately one-eighth ofV an inch in depth and extends only through a portion of the width of the door edge which makes it rather difficult .to make a mortise of uniform depth and with a smooth bottom by the use of ordinary hand tools., f Y
In the present invention it is proposed toprovide a comparatively simple jig which facilitates the cutting ofthe mortise, and the use of which results in a perfect mortise with a flat and even bottom and straight side and `end walls.
It is further proposed to provide a jig of the character described which may readily be applied to the cutting of vsimilar mortises into a door jamb.
Further objects and advantages of my invention will appear as the specication proceeds, and the novel features thereof. will be fully defined in the claims attached hereto.'
The preferred formv of my invention vis illustrated in the accompanyingM drawing, forming part of this application, in which;
Figure l shows an inside view of my jig, as applied to the edge of a door, which latter is indicated in dotted lines;
Figure 2, a bottom View of the same jig; and
Figure 3, a section taken along line 37-3 of Figure 1.
While I have shown only the preferred form of my invention, I wish to have it understood that various changes or modifications may be made within the scope of the claims attached hereto without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing in detail, my invention comprises in its principal features, a bar I adapted for placing against the side of the door adjacent the edge to be mortised, a flange 2 projecting from the bar across the front edge of the door, means indicated at 3 engageable upon the opposite side of the door' for positioning the jig with respect thereto, fixed cutting blades 4 projecting inwardly from the ange and adapted for hammering into the door edge to define the mortise area, a retractable blade 5 mounted in the bar I and operable for cutting the bottom of the mortise, and a handle 6 for operating the retractable blade.
The bar I is preferably rectangular in crosssection, and suiicientlylong to. .projectbeyond the length zf-thelmortise to becut'atboth-endsi The flange'.L 2 lmaybe 1formed integral Vwiththe bar I, andprojects'across ,the front edge ,oflthe doorfto be mortised Iwhen the bar is .placed against the side .of the-door, faslshown in Figure The flange l isfpr'eferably made; of considerable width Yso as to be adapted for usein' connection with a door. jamnlas well as withla'doorledge, and is formed with twgrooves .'I l`ada'pte'dgto'fslidablyreceive short angles aadapted tobel pushed up against the sides foi, thegdoor iIi,OfppOspiti/ion to the bar I for properlyfpositioning thjig`lI.-with respect to the 'door edge. l`The angles lfnayjbe locked. in adjusted Ypositionby meansipf "screws 9 adapted' to ridefslots Ill in the'grooves `.I `and wing nuts I I adapted to tighten,thek screwsfupon the flangejj-f I Y The flange ,is formmadiacelt, th .bar I., and interm@dilatev the lensili thereof; ,with-2Jv rectngular 'opening I2 .slightlylargerA than the mortise to be out, anrtliemar'ein-iof.iheopennevhas anyinsvert I3 ,secured thereon by means Aofgsciws I 4, the inserts havingfth'e cuttingblades '4 formed integral therewith; theyu'ttne blades projecting beyond the l inner surface vof the flange l[2. to clorresporicllto ih 'Pthfl' the molftisfe "t0 "meretractame-blede '5- is iidabl'e in theiba-I in the plane of the cutting edges of the blades 4, and is of a width corresponding to the length of the mortise to be cut.
The retractable blade 5 is operated by means of the handle Ii which normally lies against the edge of the bar I and may be substantially the same thickness as the latter but preferably is somewhat longer, as indicated in the drawing.
VThe upper edge of the handle, which is also in the nature of a straightv bar, is made to register with the upper edge of the bar I, and is connected thereto by a link I5 pivoted to both the handle and the bar, as at I6 and I1. The lower end of the handle projects below the lower end of the bar I, for convenient handling, and an intermediate portion of the handle is pivoted to the retractable blade 5, as at I8.
It will be noted that the blade 5 may be retracted by an outward push on the lower end of the handle 6 and that the blade movement may be rectilinear in view of the link connection I5.
The door edge is yshown in the Various views in dotted lines, and is identified by the numeral I9.
The operation of my invention may be described as follows:
When a mortise is to be cut into the edge of a Y 3 door, the operator places the bar I against the side of the door adjacent the edge, with the flange 2 projecting across the door edge, and with the blades 4 facing the edge in position for cutting the mortise.
The jig is secured in proper position with respect to the door edge by adjustment of the members 8 to cause the latter to bear on the side of the door opposite the bar I.
During this positioning 0f the jig With respect to the door, the blade 5 is held in retracted position by proper positioning of the handle 6.
Next the operator strikes the insert I3` with a hammer to cause the blades I4 to penetrate the edge of the door to the depth of the desired more tise, and thereupon he swings the handle 6 toward the bar I to cause the blade 5 to enter the door edge from the side and to cut the bottom of the mortise. This completes the operation.
t is apparent that the steps dr holding mein; b'es 8 do not need to be adjiisted for eachoper'- ation, but may be' used in the same pdsitio'n as long as the door s to be xr'idrti'sed have the' saine thickness. On theY otherjhand, they can be ad'- justed fdrddodrs of dieren't thicknesses, and the width of the harige is such that it allows the stop members 8 to be easily adjusted for u'se in connectionwith a door jamb or the like.
The blade 5 may have a comparatively narrow and smoothvsudirlg. et inthe, par annee the link connection vI5 hasffsufllcientggive to prevent any binding of the blade Within the. bar.
I claim: n
1. A jig for'mortisig adqr edge or the like comprising a bar having an inneredge adapted for placing against the side 'of the door, a flat `flange projecting froml the inner edge of the bai' acoss. the dr edge and adapted to lie flat against the latter and made lto project beyond meneer edge, means en the projecting prtion ofthe flange for barig the opposite side of the door edge, the flange Vhavirfig fixed blades projecting toward the dor' edge te denne a rectangularv fnorti'sey area adjacent the bar and to cut the edges ofthe mortise When hamrnered. into the door', a bottom cutting blade retractable in thebar in the plane of the extremities of the edge cutting blades, and means for driving the bottom cutting blade into the door for cutting the bottom of the mortise, the latter means comprising a straight handle disposed upon the outer edge of the bar and normally lying 'adjacent thereto, a link connection between corresponding ends of the handle and the bar, and a pivotal connection between the handle and the bottomv cutting blade.
2. A jig for mortising a door edge or the like comprising a bar having an inner edge adapted for placing against the side of the door, a hat flange projecting from the inner edge of the bar aerss the door edge and adapted to lie dat against the latter and made to project beyond the dor edge, means on the projecting portion -of' the flange frbearing on the opposite side of the door edge, the flange having fixed blades pijtig toward the door edge to denne a rectangular mortise area adjacent the bar and to cut the edges ofv the mortise when hammered intr)` the dooi,l a bottoni 'cutting blade retractable inthe bar in the plane ofthe extremities of the edge cutting blades; and means foi' driving the bottom cutting blade into the door for cutting the bottom of thenrortis'e,` the latter means comprising a straight handle disposed upon the outer edge of the bar and normally lying adjacent thereto, a link c nnection between correspending' ends of the' handle and the bar, and a pivotal connection between the handle and the bottom cutting blade, andthe free end of the handle projecting beyhd the corresponding end of the bar to facilitate the operation of the handle.
