FRANKLIN BALL, OF PALMYRA, NEBRASKA.
WAGON END-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent llo. 266,076, dated October 17, 1882,
Application filed August 14, 1882. (No model.) i
To all trhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN BALL, a. citizen of the United States, and a resident'of Palmyra, in the county of Otoe and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Grates for Wagons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an end-gate i'or wagons, constructed as fully described hereinafter, and provided with detachable bolts, so that the gate may be set and secured in any desired position.
In the drawing the figure represents in perspective the rear end of a wagon body and gate, showing my improvement.
A A are the sides ofa wagon. B3 are cleats, between which slides the'gate O. D is the bottom, and a are ribs upon the outer side of the gate. In each rib is a series of slots, 0, adapted for the passage of a head, i, and shank c of a bolt, I, the end of which is bent down to form an angle parallel to the flat head. In each side of the body are horizontal slots at m, adapted to receive the head and shank of the bolt.
\Vhen the gate rests against the bottom of the wagon the bolts are passed through the upper slots, 6, in the ribs a and through the slots at m, the handles being turned to a horizontal position as the headst'are passed through the slots m m, and then falling to vertical positions as soon as the heads t' are beyond the slot, thereby preventing the longitudinal with drawing of the bolts and holding the parts in place.
When it is desired to secure the end-gate in an elevated position to facilitate the discharge of grain, &c., the end-board is raised and the bolts are passed through one or other of the lower slots, 0," and then through the slots at or m, thereby holding the gate in its elevated position, and at the same time preventing the sides of the wagon from spreading.
While the gate is securely locked in any position to which it is set, it can at any time be as readily removed as those made iii-the ordinary manner.
1 claim The combination, in a wagon, of sides A A, having cleats B B and slots at m, and a sliding end-gate, 0, having ribs to, each with a series of slots, 0, and bolts I, having flat heads 2', and bent to form handles parallel to said heads, as set forth.
Int'estimonfwhereot'l have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANKLIN BALL.
Witnesses:
