Description

(No ModeL) ,A. M BARRETT.
COMBINED SPOOL AND THIMBLB HOLDER ADD THREAD CUTTER. No. 266,009. Patented Oct. 17, 1882.
UNITED STATES IATETNT FFICE.
ANTONIO M. BARRETT, OF IONE CITY, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINED SPOOLANDTHIMBLE HOLDER AND THREAD-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part 'of Letters Patent No. 266,009, dated October 17, 1882.
Application filed July 25, 1882. (No model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANTONIO M. BARRETT, of Ione City, county of Amador, State of California, have invented an Improved Combined Spool and Thimble Holder and Thread-Gutter; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to anew and useful device, which I call a combined spool and thimble holder and thread-cutter.
My invention consists of a suitable spindle or shaft for receiving the spool, of a standard for supporting the thimble,of a cutter for severing the thread, and of a hook or pin for affixing the device in convenient position. These are the results of a construction as follows: A single wire is bent toform a. cross above and an open base below, one end of the wire fitting into a hook on the other end at one corner of the base and forming the spindle for thespool. Upon the front of the cross above is soldered a Wire, the upper portion of which is bent outwardly and receives one end of a small blade extending from the main piece. Upon the back of the cross is affixed a bent pin or book, which sustains the device, and forms, with the top of the cross, a secure resting-place for the thimble. This will be more fully seen by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device. Fig. 2 is a perspective View, showing the application of my device.
Let A represent the vertical or central portion, andB the arms, of across havingan open base, 0, at right angles. These parts are formed of a piece of wire bent double to form the center A and arms B. At the base of the cent-er the wire extends in opposite directions, thence downwardly, where one end is bent to form a hook, a. The other end extends across to it and lies in the hook, thus forming a parallelogram, the base of which is the spindle c, which may be released from the hook when necessary. To the center A, in front, is attached a small piece of metal, b, here shown as a bent wire, the upper portion of which diverges from the center wire.
D is a small steel cutting-blade, one end of which is secured to the center Aand the other to the top portion of piece I). v
To the back of'the center piece is secured by one end awire, E. Its top is free, and diverging slightly from the main center A. Its end is bent down and sharpened to form a pin or hook.
The'use of this device is shown clearly in Fig. 2, and is as follows: It is intended to be secured to the garment of theperson using it, in some convenient position,by simplyinserting the pin or hook E. To insert the spool F the end of the spindle c is released from the hook to and the spool fitted upon it, after which it is rehooked and the thread may be drawn from the spool, which is thus secured. The thread may be out upon the blade D above, and when it is necessary, for any purpose, to lay aside the thimble Gr, it may be titted upon the top of the center A. Its edge will pass down between the loose top of the pin E and the back of the center A and be held securely and prevented from t'allingpfit'. I
The cross-arms B and the wide base 0 lend stability to the device and cause it to lie in convenient position.
I may make several sizes, if necessary, and the finish of the wire may be according to fancy,- though I preterit to be nickeled.
The device is useful for persons who do any kind of hand-sewing. Its convenience and effectiveness, together with its small cost, will renderit a desirable article.
It is obvious that the blade D might be omitted and there would still be a convenient and useful device.
Having thgs described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A spool and thimble holder constructed of a piece of wire bent to form a vertical center, A, upon top of which the thimble is sustained, and an open base, O, in one corner of whichone end of the wire is formed into a hook, (I, and receives the other end from the spindle 0, upon which the spool is fitted, and ahook or pin, E, upon the back of the device to secure it, the top of said pin being separated from the center A to receive the rim or edge of the thimble, substantially as herein described.
2. A combined spool andthimble holderand thread-cutter, constructed of wire bent to form a vertical center, A, upon top of which the thimble is sustained, cross-arms B, and wide open base O, in one corner of which one end of Q meow crossarms B, open lower portion, 0, having a the other end forming the spindle 0, upon which hook, at, at one corner, and a spindle or base, 0, the spool is fitted, the cutting-blade D, supadapted to rest in said hook or to be removed ported from the front of the device by a, strip therefrom, 2t cutting-blade, D, in front, and a 15 5 or piece, I), and the pin or hook E, secured to' pin or hook, E, behind all arranged-and used the wire is formed. into a hook, a, and receives the back of the center A, and having its upsubstantially as herein described. per portion free to receive between it'and the In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand. center A the rim or edge of the thiinble, snb- ANTONIO M. BARRETT. stantially as herein described. Witnesses: 1:) 3. A combined spool and thimble holder and C. F. \VILLIMUs,
thread-cutter, consisting of a central piece, A, THOS. P. STEWART.
