UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
WILLIAM ALLEN, OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO GEORGE H. FRY, OF SAME PLACE.
STOVE-BACK LINING.'
SECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 266,005, dated October 1'7, 1882.
' Application iiled February 23, 1882. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ALLEN, of Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful lmproveme'nt'sin Stove-Back Linings, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a stove-back lining that shall be readily adjustable to accommodate stoves of different sizes,
xo and that shall have its several parts so arranged as to prevent anywarping or disarrangement by heat.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the front of my improved device; and-Fig.
2 is a rear view ofthe same, showing the position occupied by the several parts in the adjustments.
A is the main plate or body, having the usual zo curved top, and formed on the under side with loffsets or recesses bb on each side of the central or thicker portion, a.
D is a perpendicular slot, passing through the main plate about midway between the central portion, a., and the edge of the plate, and D is a diagonal slot similarly cut on the opposite side. The slots are beveled to permit the bolt-heads to sink in so that they will not project above the surface. The whole piece A,
3o with the offsets or recesses at each side, curved top, and slots, may be made at one casting.
B B are supplemental extension pieces or wings, having curved tops corresponding to the top of the Inain plate, and adapted to fit into the recesses or offsets b b. These wings are preferably of the same thickness as the shoulders formed by the offsets, so that when placed in position they Will be iiush willi the face of the central portion, a.
4o E E' are diagonal slots, passing through the wings B B, being at such angle that when the wings are placed in the recesses the slots E and D shall cross and the slots E and D shall diverge.
Instead of having the/slots D D extending in the direction shown in the drawings, they may be both perpendicular, both diagonal, or both horizontal, it being only necessary to have them disposed at angles different from 5o those of the slots in the wings. By this arrangement openings are left through the plate and wings in whatever position the wings may be of suficient size only to accommodate the bolts C C, which, with the nuts c c, securelylock the several parts together. It will be'observed 5 5 that the bolt-heads completely cover up these openings, thus preventing ashes, &c., from passing through.
When the Wings are placed in position against the shoulders of the central part. a, 6o the several parts will occupy positions denoted in Fig. 2 by the unbroken lines, and when the wings are drawn out they, with the slot-s, will assume the positions indicated by the dotted lines, the bolts sliding in the slots to permit such movement, as will be plain from the drawings.
.By the arrangement above indicated a perfectly-closed back-plate is obtained, the win gs ofv which may be drawn out or closed in to ac- 7o commodate stoves of different sizes, and when placed in position the plate A will readily slide over the wings B B when it is expanded by the heat of the fire, and when cool will return to its normal position, theboltC being leftsufficiently loose to permit ot' this movement. By this means warping or twisting is prevented and the parts are kept in proper relation to each other.
I claim as my invention- 8o l. The combination of the main plate A, having the slots D D, the wings B B, having the slots E E', and the bolts C C, substantially as and forthe purpose herein set forth.
2. The combination of the main plate A, having the central portion, a., and oifsets b b, the perpendicular slot D and diagonal slot D', the-slotted wings B B, and the bolts C G, substantially as land for the purpose herein set forth. 9o
3. The combination of the slotted wings, the main plate having slots disposed at different angles from the slots of the wings, and the bolts C C, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
