UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TYPEWRITER GUIDE Celia Dunn, .San Franciscm-Oalii. Application -March a, 1952; Serial No.275,084 v4 Claims. (01. 33-411) This invention relates to a guide for use n typewriting.
In the utilization of a conventional typewriter, it is difficult even for an experienced operator to judge the layout on a sheet in the typewriter and to space the writing to best advantage on the first writing. An example of such difficulty is manifest in the frequently observed inability to judge the location of the writing on a sheet in a typewriter with respect to the bottom of the sheet; this judgment is relatively simple as compared to observation of the marginal edges of a sheet and layout of the writing on the sheet to best advantage from an appearance standpoint.
The present invention relates to a typewriter backing sheet which enables one utilizing a typewriter to gauge properly the writingupon a sheet in a typewriter, both as to the marginal edges as Well as to layout, lengthwise, of the sheet. The backing sheet of this invention is relatively simple and can be produced relatively inexpensively.
It is in general the broad object of the present invention to provide an improved backing sheet which can be utilized to lay out writing to be provided by the typewriter with respect to the four marginal edges of the sheet and the general arrangement of the writing on the sheet.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a novel, simple and improved backing sheet of an inexpensive character.
The invention includes other objects and features of advantage, some of which, together with the foregoing, will appear hereinafter wherein the present preferred form of backing sheet of this invention is disclosed.
In the drawings accompanying and forming a part hereof, Figure l is a plan view of the back of the sheet illustrating the form of the sheet prior to use.
Figure 2 is a view of the front of the backing sheet with a portion of the sheet folded and ready for use.
Figure 3 is an end view of the backing sheet shown in Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a view showing the sheet assembled with a normal letter size sheet in place and ready for use.
Referring to the drawing, the backing sheet, indicated generally at 6, is made of any suitable flexible material such as paper, linen, or plastic, having the strength and resiliency to form a proper backing for use in a typewriter; the sheet should be of a thickness suited to the use to which it is'to-be put. Referring particularly to Figure 1, the back of the sheet includes a plurality of vertical lines 1 along the right hand margin of the back of the sheet, such lines being spaced apart a distance equal to one quarter of an inch. Sufficient lines I are provided along the right hand rear margin of the sheet to provide about four columns. Similarly spaced lines 8 are provided along the left-hand edge of the sheet, but, in this instance, a greater number of columns are provided and in the drawing I have shown sixteen columns extending from the bottom 9 of the sheet to the top margin l0 thereof. In addition, I have shown a series of numerals, indicated at 2|, at the top and bottom of the sheet, to indicate that the sheet is numbered beginning at the bottom of the sheet serially to the top thereof so that in use, as will presently appear, an operator can, by observing any one'of such numerals, be advised as to how many typewriter line spaces remain to the bottom of the sheet. The numerals have not been shown in their entirety in every column for simplicity in the showing of the drawing.
To provide a guide for horizontal spacing, a plurality of lines II are extended transversely of the sheet, being spaced a half inch apart, equal to three carriage rotational spaces. The space between the columns provided by lines 1 and 8 is ruled with other vertical extending lines I 2 spaced an inch apart. These facilitate transverse placing of typing upon a sheet. The lines I I can also be marked in inches and fractions of inches for convenience.
Referring now to Figure 2, the front of the sheet is provided with vertical lines I4 in the lower right-hand corner, these being spaced apart one quarter inch. In addition, horizontal lines l5 are provided, these being spaced apart six carriage rotational spaces. Preferably, the area between line [4 and the bottom 9, the sheet is colored distinctively across the page.
To use the sheet, the sheet is placed upon a flat surface and the left-hand margin is turned over and folded along one of the lines 1 to provide a side flap l6, as appears particularly in Figures 2 and 3, the extent of the side flap being coordinated with the size of the margin to be provided upon the sheet which is to be subsequently typed. The sheet is then inserted into place with its left hand side fitting between the side flap I 6 and the sheet 6 and with its end aligned with sheet end 9. The right-hand side of the sheet is then folded over one of the guide lines 8, as appears in Figure 4, the sheet being thus confined along both marginal edges to a desired extent. If desired, the top of the sheet I is folded over, as is shown in Figure 4, to provide a guide at the top of the sheet. Preferably, the sheet is cut at the right-hand edge along one of the horizontal lines [5 to provide a side tab I! which continues the marginal spacing and column numbers provided by lines 8 and H, as appears in Figure 2. This portion acts as a visual signal for it can be colored a distinctive color such as red, so that the operator is advised instantly when this comes into view during the typing.
From the foregoing, I believe it will be apparent that I have provided a simple, improved typewriter backing sheet and copy-holder guide, one which facilitates the handling of paper, carbon sheets and which can be used for'the variou operations carried out on a typewriter.
I claim:
1. A typewriter guide comprising a uniformly flexible backing sheet having a rectangular body folded over along one edge to provide a first side flap extending longitudinally of the sheet and across one face, the exposed portion of said side flap having line indications numbered in order, said body having a plurality of spaced lines on its other face extending parallel to said one edge as a guide for folding of the sheet upon itself to form another side flap running parallel to the first side flap but spaced therefrom a distance equal to that of a sheet placed between said flaps for typewriting.
2. A typewriter guide for typewriting upon a sheet, comprising a uniformly flexible backing sheet having a rectangular body of a size larger than said sheet and folded upon itself along each marginal side to provide a margin side flap guide for said sheet when said sheet is aligned between and is confined by said side flaps, the back of the sheet having a plurality of spaced lines extending parallel to each edge to provide a guide for formation of each side flap when a side flap is folded over onto the rectangular body, said body having a plurality of spaced line indications provided between said spaced lines and numbered in order from the bottom of the sheet.
3. A typewriter guide for typewriting upon a sheet, comprising a uniformly flexible backing sheet having a rectangular body of a size larger than said sheet and folded upon itself along each marginal side to provide a margin side flap guide for said sheet when said sheet is aligned between and is confined by said side flaps, the back of the sheet having a plurality of spaced lines extending parallel to each edge to provide a guide for formation of each side flap when a side flap is folded over onto the rectangular body, said body having a plurality of regularly spaced lines extending parallel to the minor axis of the rectangular sheet.
.4. A typewriter guide for typewriting upon a sheet, comprising a uniformly flexible backing member having a rectangular body of a size larger than said sheet and folded upon itself along its left-hand marginal side to provide a side flap along the left-hand side of the member, a cut extending inwardly from the right-hand marginal side of the sheet and normal thereto, said out being adjacent to the bottom of said member, the right-hand side of said sheet above said out being folded upon itself to provide a side flap along only the upper portion of the right-hand side of the sheet.
