UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY A. THAYER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FOLDING BED.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 265,891, dated October 10, 1882.
Application filed April 15, 1882. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY A. TIIAYER, ot' Chicago, in the county ot' Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and usef'ul Improvement in Folding Beds, of Which the following is a specification, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, in Which- Figurelisa toporplan view ofthefoldingend ofa folding bed embodying my invention and improvement; Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional elevation thereof; Fig. 3, an enlarged horizontal section through Fig. 2 on line z a; Fig. 4, a perspective representation of the adjustable rail-supportdetached from the bedstead-frame, and full size.
The nature of the present invention consists of recessed plates which are respectively provided vvith a pivot, by means of which they are secured to the insides of the bedirame rails. The faces of the rail-supports are recessed out longitudinally. that the ends ofthe end rails may have proper bearing and be adjusted therein to give to the mattress a greater or less tension, as may be requiredf The device is illustrated as used in combination with a folding bed; but it can be attached by the pivots to an ordinary bed-frame or mattressframe to serve equally as good a purpose.
1n folding beds itis largely customary to attach the end rails to the head and foot boards; but it is found that the mattress in tension bends the rails and foot and head boards, to the injury ofthe frame and beauty of the hed. By the use of my device these objections are obviated, While at the same time the pivots permit the supports so to turn as to incline with the depression ofthe mattress, as is hereinafter fully shown and described.
In the drawings, A C represent the rails, B the foot-board, and I E the mattress, ot'an ordinary folding bed.
F F represent the adjustable rail-supports, \vhicl1,are made ot' any suitable metal, and their inner faces are recessed out longitudinally, and in the margins ot' the recesses are formed a series of holes, m u, through which, of any set, pins or bolts maybe put to hold the end rails, G, in place as against the strain ofthe mattress I E. As shown at Fig. 3, the supports F are provided With pivots J, which have bearings 1n the rails C, which bearings and pivots form sufficient retaining-supports for the parts F, inasmuch as the rails (ir prevent the pivots from being loosened from the rails C, and the pivots permit the supports F at their inner ends to be depressed on a line corresponding to the line of depression which the mattress I E may have by means ot' 4the weight oi' a person thereon. The edges ot' the rails G at their ends are sho'd with metal plates S t'o prevent the Wearing of the wood. For the more durable beds socket-plates and screws x .r may be attached to the rails C to give to the pivots J firmer bearings.
.b b, &c., represent the ordinary hooks by means ot' which the, mattress is attached to the rails.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The recessed plates F, each provided with a pivot on its rear side, and perl'orations in n, in combination with the rails C and G, operat ing in the man nerand for thepurpose specilied.
HENRY A. THAYER.
