HEAD FOR PACKING-CASES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 265,839, dated October 10, 1882.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE O. MANNING, a citizen of the United States, residing in Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heads for Packing-0ases, of which the following is a specificatiomreference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a packingcase with my improved head attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views of certain modifications in construction.

This invention relates to certain improvements in that class of packing-cases'shown and described in United States Letters Patent No. 237,875, dated February 15,1881, and reissued May 2, 1882, to Ralph S. Jennings, assignor to Joshua Levering and myself, trustees. In manufacturing the packing-case in this patent of Jennings the head is left on, but applied and sewed on after the case is filled. This in practice has been found objectionable for several reasons, among which maybe stated, first, the cost of and time in attaching and sewing on the head by hand; second, the hand-sewing does not make as close ajoint as the machine, on account of the length 01" stitches; third, the heads, being detached, are liable to become lost or misplaced, and in transportation the end of the package, having no support, is liable to become crushed and broken.

The objects of my improvements are to remove these difficulties by attaching the greater portion of the head to the body in the manufacture of the packing-case, and leave an opening for filling the case, to be afterward closed by a flap or hinged section of the head.

In the annexed drawings, Fig. 1 is a perspective view ot'a veneer packing-case having my improvements, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the upper portion of the packing-case.

The letter A represents the body of a packing-case which is composed of veneer or other light material. To one end of the body of the packing-case is attached or secured a head, B, which may be thin metal, solid wood, paperboard,compositeveneers,or thin veneers united to each other by sewing or cement. This head B is united to the body A in any well-known manner-the method shown and described in Letters Patent Nos. 237,873 and 237,875 answering well. To the outer end of the packing-case is attached my improved sectional head (3, composed of wood veneers, though it is evident that for sake of uniformity in structure the heads at both ends of the packing case should be made from the same material.

This head 0 is composed of the two parts a and b and the uniting means. The means for attaching the head to the walls of the body of the packing-case consist of a strip of textile fabric stitched or otherwise secured to the head. The parts of the hereinbefore-described head, a and Z), are united to each other by a textile hinge, d, which extends from one side of the head to the other. The hinge-joint on the under side is covered by a suitable strip of flexible material, (I, made acid-proof. This strip (1, for covering the hinge-joint, is desirable to prevent the material from working through the hinge-joint. Uf course the strip d on the upper side is made water and acid proof. The portion a of the head 0 is attached to the walls of the body A while in the hands of the manufacturer of the packing-case, and the part b is secured to the same by hand-sewing or otherwise after the packing-case is filled. By the construction and organization of the aforesaid head the manufacturer is enabled to furnish the shipper with a packing'case having its parts complete and connected, the case easily tilled, and the small unattached portion of the head readily and quickly secured to the.

body of the case with a comparatively small amount of labor and time.

What I claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A veneer packing-case for guano or similar material, having one of its heads or ends coniposcd of. two parts, one of the parts being firmly attached to the body and the other part connected to the adjacent or meeting edge of the fixed part by a water andacid proof flexible strip, forming a hinged connection, and having its curved edge'provided with a flexible strip for connecting the same with the body of the case, and a strip for covering the hingejoint, as described.
