Application October 24, 1952, Serial No. 316,721 s claims. (c1. 12a- 283) This invention comprises novel and useful improvements in a colostomy unit and more specifically pertains to a colostomy appliance in which the colostomy bag is removably secured in a readily detachable manner, and wherein all the parts of the device may be readily disassembled for efficient sterlizing, cleaning or servicing of the same.

The primary'object of this invention is to provide a colostomy unit which shall receive discharge from body orifices such as the colon after surgical operations or the like, with provision for establishing an improved leak-proof sealing engagement of the colostomy bag with the body orifice.

A further object of the invention is to provide an appliance in conformity with the preceding objects wherein an improved attachment of the colostomy bag to the supporting structure of the device is obtained, and wherein a shield or guard is provided for protecting the attachment of the bag to the device; and wherein means is provided for maintaining the neck of the bag open to permit effective discharge from a body orifice into the bag.

Yet another important object of the bag is to provide a colostomy appliance as set forth in the preceding objects which shall have a comfortable and improved seating engagement of the same upon the body of a patient without however, sacricing eiliciency of operation of the device or efliciency of a sealing engagement of the device with the body of a patient.

These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective View showing a colostomy appliance incorporating therein the principles of this invention, the device being shown in the position in which it is applied to the body of a patient for use;

Figure 2 is a fragmentary vertical transverse sectional detail view taken substantially upon the plane indicated by the section line 2-2 of Figure 1 and showing in particular the manner in which the colostomy bag is removably secured to the device and showing the improved sealing means of the device;

Figure 3 is an exploded perspective View of certain elements of the device, the colostomy bag and the supporting belt being omitted therefrom; Figures 4 and 5 are respectively horizontal sectional detailed views taken substantially upon the planes indicated by the section lines 4--4 and 5 5 of Figure 3 and disclosing the bag retaining member with a bag distending hood thereon and a plate having a bag protecting shield applied thereto; and,

Figure 6 is a perspective view taken from the rear of the bag retaining means of Figure 4.

Referring now more specifically to the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that 'the colostomy unit or appliance in accordance with this invention includes a supporting strap or belt I0 which may conveniently be provided with a conventional buckle or fastening assembly whereby the belt may be adjusted to comfortably embrace the body of a patient. the belt having a pair of adjacent end portions provided with snap fastener eyelets I 4, by which the belt is removably secured to the other elements of the appliance for supporting the latter upon the body of a patient adjacent a body discharge orifice such as the colon. The colostomy appliance supported by the belt I0 includes plate I6 of any suitable material such as plastic, metal or the like and which is preferably suitably contoured to conveniently :and comfortably conform to the body of a patient adjacent a body orifice to which the device is to be applied. At its opposite sides, the plate I6 is provided with snap fasteners I8 which cooperate with the eyelets I 4. previously mentioned, whereby the plate I6 may be detachabiy secured to the supporting belt. The plate I6 includes a. centrally disposed opening 20 which is adapted to be positioned adjacent a body orifice and which is of a size to accommodate the neck portion 22 of a colostomy bag 24 which may be of cellophane or any other suitable material. y Detachably carried by the plate |16 is an arcuate or dish-shaped shield 26 of plastic or any other suitable material, which is adapted to ex.- tend through the opening 20 of the plate I6 and beyond what may be termed the front side of the plate in a manner to overlie and cover the upper portion of the neck 22 of the colostomy bag where the neck portion is attached to the plate as set forth hereinafter. The shield 26 is mounted upon an annular ring or flange 28 which is adapted to seat against the rear face of the plate I6 upon the rim of the oriflce 2 0. It is contemplated that a resilient or snapA t shall be provided between that portion of the shield 26 which joins the. annular ring 28 thereof, an`d the inside periphery of the opening 20 whereby may be pushed through the the guard member 26 face of the plate and fricopening from the rear tionally held therein.

As will be best apparent from Figure 2, the open end of the neck portion 22 of the colostomy bag 24V extends underneath the shield 26 and through the opening in the ring 28 of the shield, and thus through the opening in the plate I6 and is then-folded loutwardly upon the ring. and upon the back side of the .plate I6 where 'it is retained in a manner to be now set forth.

This retaining means consists of an assembly which may be of plastic or any other suitable material, and includes a disk-like member l3l having an annular ange :32 Y cured a guard 34 which is of substantially `the same configuration as the shield 26. The member upon which may be termed its rear vface is provided with an annular boss 36, and .has-an opening 38 which extends through the boss and the member. The opening 38 is disposed concentrically withfrespect to 'the vopening 20 and the opening of Jth'e 'ring '28, as will be readily apparent `from the."Fi'gure 2.
