The purpose of this invention is to eliminate the necessity for propping hinged window sash such as used in basement and cellar windows upwardly in the open position and to provide a device for this purpose which is particularly adapted for holding cellar windows positioned over coal bins and other comparatively inaccessible places.
With the conventional type of cellar window it is necessary to use a stick or other device for holding the sash upwardly after it is swung to the open position and although numerous types of hooks and other holding devices have been provided it is diiiicult to connect the free end of the sash with the holding device particularly where the sash is positioned over a coal bin or the like. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a snap hook for holding a cellar window sash wherein it is only necessary to force the sash upwardly into engagement with the hook or latch in order to hold the sash with the latch.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for forming a hook mounting to form a latch for basement or cellar windows whereby a hook suspended from a floor joist may be positioned to catch the edge of a sash as the sash is moved upwardly into engagement with the latch.
Another object of the invention is to provide a sash frame latch for basement and cellar windows that may readily be installed without attaching parts to the window sash.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved latch for basement and cellar windows with snaps into holding position and which is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other'objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a plate having a hook pivotally attached thereto with a hollow rivet, with an outwardly extended finger for providing a stop for the hook and with the hook held by a spring attached to the opposite end of the plate.
Other features and advantages of the invention in connection with the drawings wherein:

Figure 2 is an elevational view on an enlarged scale showing the hook in the sash retaining position in full lines and in the position of releasing the sash in dotted line.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3--3 of Figure 2 illustrating the mounting of the latch on the floor joist.
Figure 4 is a sectional plan taken on line 4-4 of Figure 2 showing the spring attached to the hook and to a clip on the mounting plate whereby the spring holds the hook in position for receiving the edge of the sash.
Figure 5 is a detail showing a section taken on line 5-5 of Figure 2 illustrating the hook retaining finger on the lower end of the mounting plate.
Figure 6 is a detail showing an elevational view of the mounting plate.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved cellar or basement window sash latch of this invention includes a mounting plate I0, a hook II, pivotally mounted on the plate Il! with an open rivet I2, and a spring I3, one end of which is secured to the hook I I and the other to a clip I4 extended from one edge of the mounting plate I0.
The lower edge, at one side of the mounting plate I0 is provided with a finger I5 which is extended outwardly from a recess I6 in the plate and the hook II is positioned behind the finger, as illustrated in Figure 5 whereby the spring I3 holds the hook in position as shown in full line so that as a sash I1 is forced upwardly against the beveled end I8 of the hook the hook is moved outwardly to the position shown in dotted lines and as the sash frame passes over the shoulder I9 of the hook the spring I3 snaps the hook back to the position shown in full line whereby the shoulder I3 extends below the sash frame with the spring I3 holding the hook II against the outwardly extended section 2IJ of the finger I5.
The open rivet I2 is provided with a flanged inner end 2I that is positioned in a recess 22 in the under side of the mounting plate II) and with the eye 23 of the hook positioned on the rivet the outer end of the rivet is peened over to provide a ilange 24 that retains the hook in position on the mounting plate.
A wood screw 25 may be placed through the rivet I2 to mount the plate I0 on a floor joist 26, as shown in Fig. 3.
The mounting plate is also provided, with a screw hole 21 through which a screw 28 may he placed to prevent turning of the mounting plate on the floor joist.
The clip I4 extends outwardly from the edge of the plate I0, as illustrated in Figure 4 and the outer end is provided with a tab 28 to retain the loop at the end of the spring I3 thereon.
With the parts arranged in this manner the latch is positioned on a floor joist as illustrated in Figure 1 and as the sash is moved upwardly the lower edge snaps under the hook as indicated by the dotted lines. When it is desired to release the sash it is only necessary to move the hook outwardly byv hand or with a rod until the sash is released so that it drops downwardly to the closed position shown in full lines in Figure 1.
It will be understood that modifications can be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
A Window sash latch comprising a mounting plate of triangular shape in cross-sectien, a hook having a shoulder with a beveled end extended from the shoulder pivotally mounted on said mounting plate at the apex thereof, and a spring positioned on the mounting plate, attached at one end to an L-shaped clip integral with one end of the base of the plate at one end of the base of the plate and at the other end to the hook, an L-shaped linger on the mounting plate integral With the end of the base opposite to the end Where the spring is attached for limiting the travel of the hook, and said hook is provided with an eye and the hook is pivotally mounted on the mounting plate by means of an open rivet whereby aV fastener for holding the mounting plate in position is extended through said open rivet.
