16 Claims.
The present invention relates to a. baby tender, in general, and to an attachment forming a baby tender when combined with a juvenile table.
Baby tenders are known which could not be used for any other purpose and a separate table and chair set and a highchair had to be provided, respectively, if other uses than baby tenders were required.
It is, therefore, one object of the present invention to provide a chair with an attachment which combined with a juvenile table forms a baby tender.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a chair with an attachment which combined with a juvenile table forms a baby tender, which table has at its underface a pair of paral lel disposed guide members which receive supplementary members extending from the said attachment.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide a baby tender having a chair which includes means for retaining the chair in operative position and for releasing the chair into inoperative position.
With these and other objects in view which will become apparent in the following detailed description, the present invention will be clearly understood in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective side view of one embodiment of the baby tender;
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation along the lines 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the attachment with the chair secured thereto;
Fig. 4 is an end view of the baby tender;
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the attachment with the chair, both in collapsed position;
Fig. 6' is a perspective view of another embodiment of the present invention;
Fig. 7 isa perspective bottom view of the attachment for the baby tender;
Fig. 8 is an elevational view of the same tachment;
Figs. 9 and 10 show an end View of the chair retaining means in inoperative and operative position, respectively;
Fig. 11 is a fragmentary side elevation showing a part of the chair with a second embodiment of the chair retaining means;
Fig. 12 is a cross-section along the lines I2-l2 of Fig. 11;
Fig. 13 is a cross-section along the lines l3|3 of Fig. 12;
Fig. 14 is a bottom plan view of the same cnahretaining means;
Fig. 15 is an end view of the means shown in Fig. 14; and
Fig 116 is a fragmentary bottom perspective view showing a part of the chair with a third embodiment of the chair retaining means.
Referring now to the drawings, and in particular to Figs. 1 to 5, the first embodiment of the baby tender comprises a table I, a chair 2 and an attachment member 3. The table I consists of two U-shaped members 4 forming the legs of the table I which support the table top 5. Preferably, horizontally disposed cross-bars 6 connect the corresponding legs of the two U-shaped members 4, and also, preferably, U-shaped channel members 1 are disposed in parallel arrangement from the front to the rear under the table I, which channel members 1 may be supported by the cross bars 6.
The chair 2 comprises a seat 8 and a back 9, which in the present embodiment are hinged together by means of hinges ID. The seat 8 is supported by two link members I I provided on each side of the seat 8. The lower ends of the link members II are pivoted to the seat 3 and the upper ends of the link members H are pivoted, either permanently or releasably, to a U-shaped, preferably, tubular frame l2, the legs l3 of which are adapted to be received by the channel mem bers 1 of the table I. The tubular frame I2 is the main portion of the attachment member 3. Spring bolts may be disposed on the channel members 1 which engage corresponding holes in the legs l3 of the frame l2 in order to secure the frame l2 to the channel members 1.
As indicated above, the seat 8 and back 9 are hinged together by means of hinges [0. The latter may be of a kind which permit of the turning of the back 9 up to a certain predetermined angle on one hand or to collapse down to the seat 8, on the other hand. The rear end of each of the frame legs l3 carries a top member l4 disposed on each side of the chair 2. The two top members I4 are designed to form an extension of the table top 5 and the upper face of the latteris flush with that of the top members H. The top members l4 may, preferably, be connected integrally or by a separate member l5. In case the connecting member I5 is provided, it may be used as abutment-for the back 9 of the chair 2. While the member [5 may be disposed at the remote end of the member l4, it may be arranged adjacent the table top, thus forming an extension of the latter.
Although the frame legs 13, when extending through the channel members 1, form sufficient support for the chair 2, it is preferred to provide an additional leg support which comprises a preferably tubular U-shaped leg frame l6 having a base I'I, adapted to contact the ground or floor, and two vertically-disposed legmembers .i dwhich extend into horizontally turned end members IS. The latter are hinged by pivots 20 to the rear ends of the frame legs I3. At least one spring bolt 20 disposed on the horizontal end member l9 and extending into a the frame legs l3 retains the leg support in opera tive position (Fig. 3).
A footrest 22 may be hingedby special hinges 23 to the front end of the seat 8. A slotted bar 24 is secured to the bottom face of the-seat 8- and a link 25 is disposed between the bottom face of the'seat8 and that oitheefootrest'iz. One end of the link 25 is pivoted to thetbottom face of the iootre'st, while its other end:- carries a pin 26 which slides in the slot of d/he bard A rest (not shown) provided'in thefront' nd of the slotted bar 24 retains the 'footrest 221111 operative position andpermit's also the turning of' the 'footrest 22-towards the-seat'rt into -inoperative position. r:
shown in Fig. 5, the attachment member 3 together with the chair=2- may be completelyscole lapsed by turning the footrest ZZrtbWa rds -the seat'B and upon withdrawalof the springbolt '20 by turning the leg frame .I fi towardstherframe 'l 2.
Referring now' to Figs. 6:10;: the-"second embodiment of the baby-tender is substantially-identical-withthe above described1first embodiment. The second embodiment comprises :again' a table I, a-chair Zand an attachmentmemberflw The table legs are formed againx preferably? of U-shaped members 4." whichssupportwthetable top '5." and horizontally" disposed. -cross bars connect the corresponding -legs.of-.-the U.-=shaped corresponding holes-Tilinwhich is pivoted to the rear end face of each of the top members M. The latches may be turned into the horizontal chair locking or operative position (Fig. 10) or into the inoperative position (Fig: -9-) which permits of easy removal of the i chair 2'? An angle-ifi at one end of the latch l5 operates as abutment for the latch l5 when turned into operative position.
members 4'. u-shaped channel. members fikare disposed under the-table 1: in similar manner as disclosed with theifirstr embodiment.
Itis a particular feature of .the second embodie mentthat the-chair. 2 .is releasably connected to the attachment member 3 and thusat'able" and chair set as disclosed. in myPatent No. 2,51'65744 which may betransformed' into a highphair, may also be used for the present baby tender; While the first embodiment'of the-baby tender required an attachment member'with a'specially designed chair, the second..embodiinent' 'requires merely an attachment member additionz to a table and chair set-,as disclosediinmyiPatentrNo. 2253617174: Although any; suitable chair I may be used for: thepresentnpurpose it iswprefierred-to use a chair which lends: dtself .tocforma also a high chair inrcombination with the. .table. i. Thus the-chair may comprise aseatBf anda back 95 whichare.supportedbytwo preferably tubular memberslfl theho'rizon'tal upperportions 'il' ofhwhich serve as arm supports, while 'the" horizontally extending bottom portions serve'a's bars to be received by "the said channel members i when transiormedinto'a'high chair.
i When used for a-baby'--tender',' the chair 2' standson theground floor next tothe table 4". The-attachment'member 3'-compris'es", as in the first embodiment, a-U-shaped"preferably tubular frame 12" the legs l3"of-which'are adapted- -to be received bythe channel membersl' -of the table t's-The rear end ofeach-efthe frame'l'egs Thus the chair 2' can easily be inserted between the top members 14', as shown in 6 and: the latch' members l5' engage the-'re'ar face of the back of the chair 2. 1 I
Referring now to Figs. 11 to 15, the secon'd em bodiment. of the chair retaining means- 'c'omprises a locking member I5 which releasably secures theattachment member? not'onlyto the table i but also to the chair 2. ."Ihough any suitable locking member may be provided for the chair 2,'the locking device as commonly used for high-chair trays may be 'u'sed foivthe present purpose. In this case the -horizontal arm support portions II are equipped-with longitudinally disposed metal plates-1B which have at least one perforation I1 adapted to receive apin W of a spring biased pivoted lever I9 to lock the chair 2' in position. The attachment member 3 comprises the- U-sh'ap'edtubular frame I2 which carries the top memberst 'l'l A spacing member 20 is'secured to each of the top members 14 andthe remote "end thereof carries a preferably-U-shaped channel member 2L 'which is adapted to receivetheperforated metal plate I6 The lever 'le -is" ofLc'roSssection and pivotedto the base of the channel member 2l The latter has a recess 22 which receives the pin I8 or turned -upen'd of the'lever 191* Aspring 23 disposed between the innerfa'ce of the lever It) and the outer 'fa'ce of a' 'branch of the channel member 21 tends to keep' the lever I9 in locking position,"'as clearly shown in Fig. 13 which also demonstrates the metal plate H5 inserted in the channel member 21 and the: turned-upend 8 or pinof thelever I8 received by the recess 2-2 of the channel-member 21 and by the perforation I1 of the metal plate lsz; I r .i I
Referring now to Fig. 16, the third embodiment of the chair retaining means comprises a rod 1-5 preferably of metal, which is disposed in vertical direction and extends through a bore 16 of the arm support portion H of the chair 2' The upper end of the rod i5 is bent over to e5:- tend in horizontal direction through a clamping member I1 which is screwed to the bottom face of the'top member 14 of the attachment member '3 The horizontally disposed-portion 'of the rod l5 terminates into an end portionbent 90 to permit of free turning in the clamping member 11 without-removal therefrom-p when the two rods I5 are inserted into the bores 116 of the arm supports i l of the. chair' 2"- and then the frame 12 inserted into the channel. members of the table, the chair'2" is releasably' secured to the table.
While I have disclosed several embodiments of the present invention, it is to be understood, that these embodiments are given by example only and not in a limiting sense, the scope of the present invention being determinedv by the objects and the claims.
