Description

. (No Model.)
' P. M. DE WEESE.
7 MODE 0? OPERATING PAWLS- USED IN LIFTING JAOKS, &c. No. 265,034.
Patented Sept. 2 1882.
Invenior. l WQQQM .UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
naAnors M. DE WEESE, or oHILLIooTHE, OHIO.
SPEOIFIOATION.forming part of Letters Patent No. 265,034, dated September 26, 1882,.
Application filed April 3, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom a may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS M. DE WEESE, of Ghillicothe, in the county of Ross, in the State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful method of operating and supporting a pawl (or pawls) 'for the purpose of holding weights or loads in lifting jacks, elevators, cottonpresses, 850., of which the following is a specification. V
For the purpose of more readily explaining the workings and merits of my invention, refercnce may be had to the aecompanyingdrawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a sectional drawing of a lifting-jack, in which A A represent the standard orframe; B, the lifting-bar; (l, the pawl; the oscillating support, and E the grooved seat or flanges in frame upon which the oscillating support and pawl, or either of them, may rest. j
Fig. 2 represents a back view of the pawl, in which the letter F shows the hollow to admit the support, and G the grooved seat.
Figs. 3 and trepresent other views of the oscillating support, the upper end of which extends in and may be pivoted to the grooved seat Gr, while the lower end rests in and may be pivoted to the grooved seat E at bottom of' pawl-box or in the frame.
It will be readily understood that when the teeth are engaged .and the pawl holding the load the oscillating support is at an angle pressing and holding the pawl against the teeth, making it impossible for them to slip, and when disengaged by hand or otherwise the oscillating support will raise and suspend the pawl from the seat, (or flanges,) causing. it to move free and avoid friction. The pawl may be operated by a spring or springs, or by the means of gravitation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The pawlhavin g the'hollowF and grooved seat G. A
2. The oscillating support or supports, in combination with a pawl or pawls, substantially as described.
