Patented Aug. 25, 1953 THREADED STOPPER ATTACHMENT FOR INTERNALLY THREADED LATHE CHUCKS Jesse A. Darling, Jackson Heights, N. Y.
Application October 1, 1952, Serial No. 312,497
3 Claims. (Cl. 279-1) The present invention relates to improvements in chucks for lathes, especially to improvements in wire chucks for lathes, especially to improvements in wire chucks for small lathes such as watchmakers lathes, although the principle of the present invention can be applied also to other types of chucks for lathes of any size and the like. More specifically, the present invention relates to new and improved stopper attachments for lathes.
One object of the present invention is the provision of a device of the character described which facilitates the removing of short pieces from the chuck, after they have been placed into the chuck and have been worked on, by ejecting said short piecesby pushing a rod that is slidably extended into the chuck through the device and through the draw-in spindle of the lathe,
Another object of the present invention is the provision of a device of the character described which can be adjusted in such a manner as to limit the depth to which pieces can be inserted into the chuck, so that all pieces resting against the device will extend into the chuck at exactly the same distance. This feature of the present invention also allows removal from the chuck of a piece of stock, during the process of working thereon and then reinserting it into the chuck quickly and easily in the same position in which it was priorto its removal, so that the reinserted piece will run more true in the lathe than it would if reinserted into the chuck at some other position.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a device of the character described which permits, to hold safely and securely very short pieces in the chuck, because a short piece resting against the device within the chuck not only can be more easily and more quickly inserted thereinto, it also will be less apt to be dislocated than if it is held only by the radially engaging jaw portions of the chuck. Moreover, the aforementioned rod greatly facilitates the cutting off of pieces of stock to length. Yet still another object of the present invention is the provision of a device of the character described which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, light in weight, simple and handy in use and which can be installed not only in newly manufactured lathes but also in lathes already in use without any substantial alterations of same.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
In the accompanying drawing a preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawing:
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of a preferred embodiment of my invention on the line l-l of Figure 2.
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view on the line 22 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a detailed side view of a hollow screw, a tubular member, a sleeve member and lock nuts.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawing (Figure 1) are indicated in dash-and-dotted lines a draw-in spindle 2 of a lathe and a hand wheel 4 provided at one end of the spindle 2. The members 2 and 4 are no parts of my present invention. A chuck 6, which in the instance shown is a wire chuck having a head portion 8, an externally and internally threaded end portion In, and an axial bore 12, is screwed. with its external thread into the drawin spindle 2 in the usual manner. An internally and externally threaded tubular member I4 is partially screwed into the internally threaded end portion of said chuck in such a manner that a portion thereof protrudes outwardly beyond said end portion I0, and a screw l6 which has a flat, smooth preferably polished head portion l8, a threaded longitudinal shaft portion 20 and a bore 22 extending through its entire length is screwed through said tubular member and extended into the axial bore of said chuck in such a manner, that its head portion is near the head portion of said chuck while the main section of its shaft portion protrudes beyond the threaded end portion of said chuck through the spindle 2 and terminates beyond the end of the spindle 2 and the handwheel 4. A rod 24 extends into the bore 22 and is slidable therein. The rod 24 preferably is provided with a head 26 (Fig. 1) for facilitating its handling and pushing into and pulling out of the bore 22. The rod 24 is somewhat longer than the screw [6, so that it can be extended therethroughentirely for pushing work pieces (not shown) out of the chuck 6. The screw Hi can be screwed more or less deep into the chuck 6, according to the type of work to be carried out. Once the screw l6 has been adjusted to a desired position the head portion [8 will limit the depth at which pieces can be inserted into the chuck 6, and proper inserting of said pieces will be facilitated by pushing the pieces so far into the 3 chuck -6 that they rest against the head portion l8 of the screw I6.
In order to prevent the screw [6 from changing its position during rotation of the chuck 6 I prefer to screw externally knurled lock nuts 28 and 30 upon the tubular member I4 and the shaft portion 26 of the screw it adjacent the threaded end portion ll] of the chuck 6 respectively. The shaft portion 20 of the screw it being of considerable length, because it extends. lengthwise through the spindle 2, it is preferred to prevent a radial swinging thereof? during rotation by interposing a sleevesmemberr 3'zibetween the shaft portion 20 and the inner side of. the
upon the shaft portion 2!], preferably in such a manner, that it partially protrudes beyond the outer end of the spindle 2 at the hand wheel 4. An externally knurled locknut 3 4 preferably is screwed upon the outer end of the shaft portion 20 adjacent the member 32 for securing the same.
Since certain changes may be made in the above article and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from thescope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing-shallbe interpreted as illustrative and not in a limited sense.
It is also to be understood that the following claims are intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention which as a matter of" language might be said to fall therebetween.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure-by Letters Patent is:
1'; In a lathe having a draw-in spindle and a hand wheel provided at one end of said draw-in spindle, a chuck provided with an axial bore and'having a head portion as well as an internally and externally threaded end portion and said externally threaded portion being adapted to be screwed into that end of the draw-in spindle which is opposite the end' provided with said hand wheel, an internally and externally threaded tubular member being partially screwed into the internally threaded end portion of said chuck in such a manner that a portion thereof protrudes outwardly beyond said end portion of said chuck, a first lock nut screwed upon that portion of said tubular member which protrudes beyond said end portion of said chuck, a screw havinga head portion and a threaded shaft portion and being provided with an axial bore being screwed. through said tubular member and extended into'the axial bore of said'chuck' in such a manner that its head portion is near the head portion of said chuck while the main section of its shaft portion protrudes beyond the threaded end portion of saidchuck through the draw-in spindle of the lathe to which that chuck is attached, a second look nut adjacent saidtubular member being screwed upon the shaft portionof said screw, an internally threaded sleeve member having tapered outer end portions being screwed upon. the end section of the shaft portion of said screw, a third lock nut adjacent said. sleeve member being screwed upon the shaft portion of'said screw, and a rod slidably, extending through the axial bore in said screw.
