axis.
about the pivot 6 of the lever 4 and the movements of oscillation about the pivot 5 of the lever 3, are synchronised.
It is also to be observed that the distance of the pivot I3 from the hinge pivot 25 of the arm l2 on the transverse lever II is the same as that separating the said pivot 25 from the'pivotal axis 26 of the transverse lever l I on the rigid lever 3.
The operation of the mechanism described above is as follows:
When the two pivots I3 and 26 are brought into coincidence with one another by means of the handle I6 and the pinion 8 is set in rotation, the cam I'I produces the upward" and downward movements of the feed dog and the eccentric Ill, by acting on the transverse lever I I through the medium of the link 9, causes the latter torock about its pivotal axis 26 without producing any movement of oscillation of the lever 3 and, consequently, the feed dog I isnot subjected to any forward movement. When acting on the handle land-fro movement of the feed dog.
According to the position of the pivot I3 on one side or the other of the transverse lever I I, the
feed dog I advances either in one direction or the For this reason it will thus be seen that the handle I6 allows, on the one hand, adjust- ,ment of the amplitude of oscillatory movement of the rigid lever 3 and, on the other hand,'reversal of direction of advance of the feed dog I.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the movements, either in a vertical plane or in a horizontal plane, of the feed dog, are always synchronised, in view of the fact that they are controlled by a cam and an eccentric secured to manner by the pinion 8.
In a modification, the pinion 8, instead of having a vertical axis, may turn about a horizontal nary cam. However, it is then necessary for the hinge of the link 9 o'n'the transverse lever II to In this case, the cam Il may be an ordielement, a rigid lever mounted for rocking movement about a fixed vertical axis, an eccentric mounted for rotation about a vertical axis and driven by said driving element, a transverse lever pivotally connected intermediate its ends to one end of the rigid lever for pivotal movement relativethereto about'a vertical axis, a connecting rod connecting the eccentric toone end of the transverse lever for imparting rocking movement .to said transverse lever, an arm mounted at one end for adjustment about a fixed vertical axis, a linkconnecting the other end of the arm to the other end of the transverse lever, means for adjusting the arm about said fixed vertical axis, to vary the angular relation. betweensaid link and transverse leverto vary the direction and amplitude of rocking movement of the rigid lever imparted thereto by rocking movement ofthe transverse lever, means transmitting horizontal oscillating movement from the other end of the rigid .lever to said feeding device, a second lever mounted for rocking movement about a fixed horizontal axis, said second lever having ,an input arm and an output arm, means iconnecting'the output arm of the second lever to the input arm thereof to render the output arm rigid with ,the input arm in a vertical plane but ,to enable the output arm to oscillate in a horizontal plane relative to the input arm, means for transmitting oscillating movementin a vertical plane to the end of the input arm, and means for transmitting ,vertical oscillating movement from the end of the output arm to said feeding device. U
