l'Glaim. l The invention pertains togascocks for gaseous fuel cookstoves and-the like 'and has special referenceto gascock-s of the "so-called high-low type rotatable through an angle of approximately ninety degrees'fr'om closed to full open position, in combination with means "providing "a stop serving to facilitate positioning of the valve vmemberin a partially open position and 'yi'elda'ble to permit passage'from the partially open position into fully closed position.
The objects of the invention thus generally set forth, together with other and ancillary advantages, are attained by the construction and arrangement shown by way of illustration in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a fragmentary side elevational view of a gascock embodying my invention, the manifold to which the gascock is attached being shown in section and a portion of the valve body being broken away to show a detail of construction.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view of the improved gascock, the body portion being broken away to show the valve member.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View taken in the plane of line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional View taken approximately in the plane of line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but showing the valve member in fully open position.
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Figs. 3 and 5 but showing the valve member in its intermediate or low position.
Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional View similar to Fig. 4 but showing the valve member in the position corresponding to that of Fig. 6.
In carrying out my invention, I utilize to advantage a gascock of conventional construction comprising a body Ii] having an inlet supply port H opening through a passage [2 in a stem l3 connected with a manifold M. Within the body is a hollow valve member l5 having a control port It movable with the valve member into and out of registry with the supply port ll. Fuel admitted through the supply port into the valve member is discharged from the gascock 2 through a discharge nozzle l7 equipped with the usual needle valve (not-shown) The valve member i5 has an operating stem 48 rigid therewith and passing through a cap havinga cylindrical boss I9 with oppositely disposed win-g portions 20 secured'to the valve body by :means of screws .21 anchored in diametrically disposed lugs 22. The free end of the-operating stemds adapted to receive removably an'operatingknobiiz.
"The valve member carries a radial stop pin 2:5 coacting with stop shoulders 25 and 26 on theb'ody to limit the-rotational movement of the valve member, the arrangement being such that when the .pin engages with the shoulder 26, the
valve .is in closed position and when engaging with the shoulder v25., is in tull open position. The stop shoulders 25 and 2are formed by cutaway vthe body .to providea notch 21 ill-0H9 side thereof and serving to expose the portion of the valve member carrying the stop pin 24.
In carrying out my invention, I provide an additional stop intermediate the stop shoulders 25 and 26, adapted for engagement by the stop pin in moving from its full open position (Fig. 5) to a partially open position (Fig. 6) and such intermediate stop is constructed so as to be capable of yielding to permit movement of the valve member from its said intermediate position to its closed position.
The intermediate stop for the valve member may be provided advantageously through the use of a plate centrally apertured so as to form in effect a ring 28 of spring steel or the like interposed between the wing portions 20 of the valve cap and the valve body so as to be secured in position by the screw 21. The ring is interrupted adjacent one of the fastening screws so as to form a circumferentially elongated spring finger 29 overlying the notch 27 and formed with a shoulder or abutment 3t spaced a short distance from the free end of the finger and so positioned as to be engageable by the stop pin 24 as the valve member moves from its full open position into a position in which the control port it is in partial registry with the supply port ll (Fig. 7). As best shown in Fig. 2, the finger has a bent tip 3| providing an inclined cam face for engagement by the stop pin when the valve member is moved from closed to open position.
The ring 28 is made circumferentially adjustable in order to vary the position of the stop 30. For this purpose the openings through which the fastening screws 2| pass are elongated to form slots 32 of sufficient length to permit an ample range of adjustment for the stop shoulder 30.
Summarizing the operation of the device, the valve member is moved from its closed position (Fig. 4) into full open position with the control port 16 registering completly with the supply port H. As shown, the range of movement from closed to open position is approximately ninety degrees. When it is desired to adjust the gascock to a partially open or low position, the valve member is rotated reversely from the position shown in Fig. 4 to that shown in Figs. 6 and 7, with the stop pin 24 engaging with the intermediate yieldable stop shoulder 30 on the spring finger 29. Movement from this latter position into fully closed position is permitted by yielding of the finger 29, and conversely in the movement from closed to open position, the stop pin slidably engages the inclined tip 3| of the finger so a that a minimum degree of resistance to such movement is interposed by the finger.
I claim as my invention:
A gascock comprising a body, a valve member rotatable in the body and having an operating stem rigid therewith, a valve cap removably secured to the body and apertured for the passage of the valve stem, said body having a gas inlet port and said valve member having a control port movable into and out of registry with said inlet port, means on the body and valve member for limiting rotation of the valve member including a stop member carried by and movable with the valve member and including an open position stop and a closed position stop for coaction with said stop member and respectively defining fully open and fully closed positions of said valve member upon engagement by said stop member, a resilient sheet metal member disposed in a plane transversely of the axis of said valve memo'f movement of said stop member, said finger further having a third portion located between said second portion and said tip portion extending abruptly into the path of movement of said stop member and providing a stop shoulder engageable by said stop member for yieldably holding the valve member in an intermediate position, said gradually sloping tip portion and said gradually sloping second portion providing yieldable cam faces engageable by said stop member for retarding movement of said valve member from closed position toward open position and from open position toward closed position upon approaching said intermediate position.
