Description

July 28, 1953 s. REIDER COMBINATION FLUID CONTAINER AND CLOSURE HAVING A SCREW DRIVER PROJECTION Filed May 10, 1949 Q INVENTOR 1s go JAMUEL RE/DER ATTORNEY Patented July 28, 1953 UNITED srAT s PATENT,
or ies COMBINATION FLUID CONTAINER AND CLOSURE HAVING A SCREW DRIVER PROJECTION This invention relates to container closure and more, particularly to a cap removably secured over the outlet of a fluid container. v H The present invention provides a cap for a fluid container which cap has a tongue-like or screwdriver blade projection extending therefrom. Such cap is of great convenience when the fiuid in the container is to be passed therefrom into an aperture or opening closed by a screw. For example, the cap when positioned to close the outlet of a container of cigarette lighter fluid may be used to remove the screw plug closing the filler-opening of the lighter. Thereafter, the cap may be removed from the container and the wherein "it i useful to remove a screw from a lubricating aperture and return the screw to said aperture. The uses above-mentioned are set forth by way of example and not by way of limitation.
The invention will be understood from the following description When considered in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof and in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of one embodiment of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a front elevational view of another embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 4 is a side elevational View of the embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a front elevational view of a further embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 6 is a side elevational View of the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Fig. 5, and
Fig. 7 is a side elevational view of a cigarette lighter partly broken away and disclosing the cap of the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Fig. 1 positioned to unscrew the plug from the filler opening of the lighter.
Like characters of reference refer to like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing a container I9 is a usual form of lighter fluid or oil can and has a spout II thereon which spout has a closure or cap I2 on the outlet end I 3 thereof. The closure or cap I2 is internally threaded at I4 while spout II is externally threaded at I5 (Fig. 7).
Cap I2 has a knurled peripheral rim I6 around 2Claims. (Chill-3.1)
2 the top 'II thereof anda screw-driver blade or tongue I8 extending diametrically transversely of. the cap and projecting upwardly from rim I6. Blade I8 is preferably formed integrally with said cap. 7
As illustrated more particularly in Fig. '7, screwdriver blade IB is adapted to fit into the slot I9 of a screw 20. The screw 20, as illustrated in Fig; 7, is a screw plug for a-filler-opening in a lighter '2I which plug has screw-threads 22 thereon which cooperate with screw-threads 23 in the filler-opening.
- In operation, blade I8 of cap I2 is placed in slot I9 of screw plug 20. Container Iilwith spout II thereon is then' turned in a direction to unscrew threads 22 on the plug from threads 23 in the filler opening thereby removing the plug from said opening. Preferably, the threads I41 in cap I2 and threadsv I5 on spout I I are such that when container II] is turned to remove plugZB from the filler opening of the lighter that cap I2 tends to become tightened on said spout. v
After plug 20 is removed from the filler opening, cap I2 is removed from spout I I by grasping knurled rim I5 and turning the cap so that threads It are unscrewed from threads I5 on the spout. Lighter fluid is then poured into the lighter through the filler opening. When filling of the lighter is completed, plug 20 is replaced in the filler opening and tightened therein by placing blade I8 of cap 20 in slot I9 and turning the cap by grasping knurled rim I6. Cap I2 is thereafter replaced on spout I5 to close the outlet end I3 thereof.
While the hereinabove described operation is.
preferable, it will readily be understood that cap I2 may be removed from spout I I and then used to unscrew plug 20' from the filler opening.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 3 and 4, cap I2 is circular and has a top 24 with a depending skirt 25 which skirt is screwthreaded at 26 to engage screw-threads 21 on the neck of a bottle 28. A screw-driver blade 29, which may be integrally formed with the top of said cap, projects downwardly from the inner side of top 24 to a point beyond the lowermost part of skirt 25.
Cap I2, in operation, is removed from the neck of bottle 28 and used to loosen or tighten screws by placing blade 29 in the screw slot and turning cap I2 in the desired direction.
In the embodiment of the invention disclosed in Figs. 5 and 6, cap I2 is similar to that illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 except that screw-driver blade 28 extends outwardly of top 24. Cap I2 and blade 29, in the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 5 and 6, may be used in ti enin or loosening screws in the same manner as in the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 1 and 2, as hereinbefore described.
Inasmuch as various modifications may be made in the forms of the invention herein disclosed and in the location and relative arrangement of the several parts of said invention without departing from the principles thereof, it will be understood that the invention is not to be limited excepting by the scope'of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In combination with a liquid container for inflammable liquid for a lighter having a liquid containing compartment with a screw-threaded liquid inlet normally closed by a screw-threaded plug, the threads of said inlet and plug engaging one another, said container being of such size and shape as to be readily retained in the hand of a user and having a spout secured on and projecting outwardly from one end thereof and from which spout liquid passes from the container, the outlet end of the spout being screwthreaded, a closure removably secured on said outlet end of the spout, the closure having screwthreads adapted to cooperate with said screwthreads of the spout, and a screw-driver projection on the closure and extending outwardly thereof, said screw-threads of the spout and the closure being opposite to said screw-threads of said lighter inlet and the lighter plug and so arranged that the closure becomes tightened on the spout when said screw-driver projection is used to unloosen the plug from said compartment inlet whereby said container is usable as a screwdriver on the outlet end of the spout, the spout acting as the shank of said screw-driver and the closure as the blade thereof to remove said plug from the lighter compartment inlet.
2. In combination with a liquid container for inflammable liquid for a lighter having a liquid containing compartment with a screw-threaded liquid inlet normally closed by a screw-threaded plug, the threads of said inlet and plug engaging one another, said container being of such size and shape as to be readily retained in the hand of a user and having a spout secured on and projecting outwardly from one end thereof and from which spout liquid passes from the container, the outlet end of the spout being screwthreaded, a closure removably secured on said outlet end of the spout, the closure having screwthreads adapted to cooperate with said screwthreads of the spout, and a screw-driver blade projection formed integrally with the top of said closure and extending transversely and outwardly thereof, said screw-threads of the spout and the closure bein opposite to said screw-threads of said lighter inlet and the lighter plug and so arranged that the closure becomes tightened on the spout when said screw-driver projection is used to unloosen the plug from said compartment inlet whereby said container is usable as a screwdriver on the outlet end of the spout, the spout acting as the shank of said screw-driver and the closure as the blade thereof to remove said plug from the lighter compartment inlet.
