2 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in furnaces and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a furnace having a heating chamber and an air passage about the heating chamber through which a cool stream of air is directed to be heated by the hot walls of the chamber and then directed to outlet conduits leading to one or more room A further object of the present invention is to providea heating unit including a novel and improved arrangement of staggered baflles to reduce the speed at which air is passing through the passage and which baffles also reinforce and strengthen the entire unit which is constructed of sheet metal parts welded together.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a hot and cold air furnace that is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, eflicient and durable in operation, inexpensive to manufacturaand otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral l0 represents a hollow body including a cylindrical wall l2, an upper horizontal wall r plate l4 and a lower horizontal wall or plate It. The plate I2 is provided with a depending flanged portion l8 that enters the upper end of the wall l2 and the plate i6 is provided with an upstanding flanged portion 25 that enters the lower end of the wall l2. The flanged portions l8 and 20 are secured tothe wall I2 by fasteners 22. 7 An inner cylindrical wall or sleeve 24 is mounted in the body Ill concentric of the wall [2. The upper and lower ends of the sleeve 24 are secured to and in sealing contact with the plates Hi and 16 by Welding or the like W to form a combustion chamber C. v
A plurality of supporting legs 26 having inturned feet 28 at their lower ends support the body ll] in an elevated position. The inturned flanges 30 at the upper ends of the legs 26 are secured to the lower plate l6 by bolts or the like 32.
A discharge tube 34 extends radially through the forward portions of the walls I2 and 24 and is fixed by welding or the like to the walls 12 and 2d. The inturned flange 36 at the forward end of the tube 34 is removably secured to the mounting flange 38 of an oil burning device 40 (of any suitable well known type) by bolts 42 and the delivery end 44 of the device 40 extends axially through the tube 34 for heating air in the chamberC.
Opposing openings in the lower and rear portions of the walls l2 and 24 receive an outlet neck or conduit 46 that is welded to the inner wall 26. The conduit 46 supports an external ring 58 that is secured to wall [2 by fasteners 58 or by welding and the conduit 46 is coupled with a flue 5|.
A hollow cylindrical member 52 is supported on the upper plate l4. The bottom of the member 52 is open and the member 52 includes a peripheral flange 54 at its open bottom that is removably secured to the plate It by fasteners 56. The upper wall of the member 52 is formed with a plurality of apertures or openings in which the inlet ends of supply conduits 58 are suitably.

First and second sets of vertically disposed baffles 60 and 62 are mounted within the air passage P provided between the walls l2 and 2d. The baffles 66 depend from the upper plate l4 and terminate above the bottom plate l6 and the bafiles 62 rise from the plate l6 and termi nate below the plate Id. The baflles 60 alternate with the baflles 62 so that the air travelling in the passage will climb up one baille and then climb down the next bafile.
An air supply pipe 6 1 extends through an aperture A in the forward portion of wall [2 to enter the passage P adjacent and below the device 40. The upper plate I4 is formed with an opening 66 that communicates with the passage P adjacent the device 40. A vertical partition 68 within the passage P. The opening 66 is located on one side of the partition 58 and the pipe 64 is located on the other side of the partition but close to the opening 66 to permit maximum travel of air directed through the passage by air impelled into the passage through the pipe 64.
In practical use of the present invention, the fuel is burned in the chamber C and effects a heating of the wall 24. Air is. directed through the pipe 64 and into and through the passage P in contact with the hot wall 24. The air in passage P moves relatively slow due to the baffle arrangement assuring that the air in the passage will be heated sufliciently when it enters the room areas by way of opening 66, member 52 and conduits 58.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A furnace comprising inner and outer concentric walls having an air passage therebetween, a bottom plate closing the lower ends of both Walls, an upper plate closing the upper ends of both walls, a hollow member supported upon the upper plate, a plurality of outlet pipes extending from the member, said upper plate having a single opening forming a communication between the interior of said member and said passage, a burner supported exteriorly of said outer wall and including a discharge end extending radially throu h both walls and terminating within the confines of the inner wall, an outlet conduit extending radially through both walls and having an inlet end within the confines of the inner wall, baffle means within the passage, and an air inlet pipe having an outlet end entering the passage and a vertical partition between said walls, said partition being located between said pipe and said 1 opening whereby air entering the passage by way of the pipe will be directed about the passage before rising in the opening.
2. A furnace comprising inner and outer concentric walls having an air passage therebetween, a bottom plate closing the lower ends of both walls, an upper plate closing the upper ends of both walls, a hollow member supported upon the upper plate, a plurality of outlet pipes extending from the member, said upper plate having a single opening forming a communication between the interior of said member and said passage, a burner supported on said outer wall and including a discharge end extending radially through both walls and terminating within the confines of the inner wall, an outlet conduit extending radially through both walls and having an inlet end within the confines of the inner wall, baflle means within the passage, an air inlet pipe having an outlet end entering the passage, said bafile means including first and second sets of vertical baffies, the bafiles of said first set alternating with the baffles of said second set, the first set of bailles rising from the bottom plate and terminating below the upper plate and the second set of bafiles depending from the upper plate and terminating above the lower plate, and a vertical partition in the passage extending between the upper and lower plates, said single opening being disposed on one side of the partition and said outlet end of said air inlet pipe being disposed on the other side of the partition, whereby the air to be heated will flow through the sinuous pathway defined by the bafiles from the air inlet pipe to the opening.
