1 Claim.
This invention relates to devices for breaking the seals and removing caps of covers of vacuum sealed containers, and in particular a handle having a rod extended therefrom with a pin spaced from the end of the rod and positioned to pierce a cover on a glass or other container, and a spring actuated jaw slidably mounted on the rod and positioned whereby a lower end thereof is adapted to grip the lower edge of the closure into which the prong spaced from the end of the rod is extended.
The purpose of this invention is to provide means for prying a lid or cap from a vacuum sealed container which, simultaneously with the prying action pierces the closure member to break the seal.
Various devices have been provided for opening vacuum or sealed jars and other containers, however, the method most commonly used is that of gripping the closure cap with the prong of a conventional can opener and it is sometimes diflicult to insert the prong below the edge of a cap or closure. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a vacuum sealed container opener in which the device is anchored on a cap or closure with a pin or prong extended through the closure member and wherein with the device anchored in this position a jaw is actuated to gripping relation with the closure by a spring whereby the elements coact to readily remove the closure from the container.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for forming a sealed container opener whereby the closure of the container is pierced to break the seal at the same time that the edge of the closure is gripped whereby with the seal broken the closure is readily removed.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for removing a closure of a sealed container in which a gripping jaw is adjustably mounted in relation to a piercing prong whereby the device is adapted for use on containers of difierent sizes.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sealed container opener that breaks the seal at the same time a closure of the opener is pried upwardly in which the device is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a substantially U-shaped gripping jaw slidably mounted on a rod and urged toward a prong extended through the rod by a spring on the rod and positioned between the jaw and the handle on the extended end of the rod.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view illustrating the improved sealed container opener showing the device positioned on the cap of a glass.
Figure 2 is a plan View of the opener also showing the device on a cap of a glass.
Figure 3 is an end elevational view looking toward the end of the opener on which the gripping jaw and piercing prong are positioned.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the slide including the gripping jaw.
Referring now to the drawing wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved sealed container opener of this invention includes a rod l0 having a handle II on one end, a gripping jaw I2 positioned on the lower end of a slider I 3, which is slidably mounted on the rod ID, a spring [4 positioned between the end of the handle II and the slider I3, and a piercing prong l5 spaced from the extended end of the rod and positioned to coact with the jaw l2 for piercing a cover as indicated by the numeral [6 and at the same time anchoring the opener as the jaw I2 engages the opposite side of the closure.
The slider I3 is provided with an upper flange I! that is positioned to travel on the rod l0 and, as illustrated in Fig. 1, the flange I1 is inclined to support the slider with the jaw l2 extended upwardly whereby with the prong l5 positioned upon the cap or closure the spring M will urge the jaw [2 under the edge of the cap and as the handle I I is moved upwardly the prong IE will pierce the upper surface of the cap.
The flange I1 is provided with an opening "3 in which the end of the spring I4 is held whereby the spring may readily be compressed to withdraw the jaw l2 when positioning the opener on the cover or cap of a container. I
With the parts arranged and assembled in this manner the opener may readily be used for container closures of different types and designs and with the vacuum relieved by piercing the cover with the prong the cap or cover is readily removable.
It will be understood that modifications within the scope of the appended claim may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
