Patented June 16, 1953 UNITED PERAMBULATOR RAMZE V Benjamin F. Leber, "hicago, 7, Application June 17, 1949,- Scrial No. 99,774
This invention relates ambulators and strollers.
An object of myinvention is to provide a perambulator 'or stroller which may be constructed less expensively and more "expeditiously than conventiona1 devices of that character without sacrifice of strength and appearance.
Another object is to provide a supporting structure for a device of the character referred to adapted to be manufactured at substantially less expense'without lossof the advantages of prior structures of that character.
It is another object to provide a supporting structure formed essentially of steel, aluminum or other suitable strap stock.
An additional object is to provid a perambulater or stroller chassis having the requisite rigidity yet capable of some swaying motion.
Afurther object is to provide a chassis of the character referredto formed of relatively few and inexpensive parts.
Another object is to provide a chassis of the type referred to which may be shipped in knockdown form so as to occupy minimum shipping space.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the description proceeds.
The invention will be better understood upon reference to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a perambulato embodying features of my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged top plan view of the chassis and axles of the same.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken as indicated by the line 3-3 in Fig. 2. 7
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, illustrating an exemplary form of my invention, there is shown a perambulator comprising a carriage body l and a frame 12 suitably secured to the upper margin of the body and a collapsible hood l4 supported by the frame- A handle member I5 is pivoted at Hi to the frame I2 and hinged at IT to a member l8 crossing and hinged at H! to another member hinged at 22 to said frame, a releasable locking means 24 serving to hold the members l5 and I8 rigid in service. The lower ends of the crossed memto doll and bers l8 and 20 are pivotally connectedas at'26 to links or shackles 28 which in turn'are pivotally connected as at 30 to the terminals 32 of a chassis 33.
The chassis 33 comprises a pair of substantially G-shaped side frame members 34, each having a straight intermediate portion 36, andfront and 31 Claims. (01. zsd-iotf v rear. 'upwardly'f curled, open loops, 3 such that a;
limited degree" 'of lateral, resilient'flexing of the loops relative to' the intermediate portion 36 is possible; Each intermediate portion 36 ha's a pairof holes 40' which may bedisposed nearthe ends'thereof and may be closer together than the terminals 32. The side frame members 34 are held rigidly in parallel relation by struts 42 v I riveted as at 44 'or otherwise suitably connected to the intermediate portions 36 close to and between the sets of holes 4|]. The holes 40 are provided to receive axles 46 on which wheels 48 are mounted, the wheels being held in place as by cotter pins 50.
The side frame members 34 and the struts 42 are preferably formed of the same strap stock,
andv are arranged with their faces in vertical planes, whereby requisite rigidity is insured, and are readily formed with the holes 40 to enable the axles to pass directly through said side frame members, thereby eliminating the necessity for hangers or other special axle-supporting brackets or the like found in conventional perambulator and stroller chassis construction. The axles.
46 are not fast to the chassis 33, so that, when the vehicle is shipped knocked down, the axles may be placed parallel to the chassis side members and thus the width of the packageis determined substantially by the width of the chassis.
Various modifications coming within the spirit of my invention may suggest themselves to those skilled in the art, and hence I do not wish to be limited to the specific form shown or use mentioned, exceptto the extent indicated in the appended claims,- which are to be interpreted as broadly as the state of the art will permit.
' Iolaim:
1. A perambulator or the like chassis comprising a pair of identical parallel C-shaped side frame members, each formed of a steel strap than said axes, and struts extending adjacent and between said axes and united to said inter-' mediate portions and entirely between said side frame members, each strut being formed of a steel strap arranged with its faces substantially 3 vertical and of substantially the same cross-section as said side frame members, the terminals of said struts being united to said straps, the intermediate portions of said struts being parallel to said axes.
2. A perambulator chassis comprising a pair of parallel O-shaped side frame members, each formed of a steel strap whose faces are entirely planar and vertical and having axle-receiving holes and open end loops curled upward with their freeterminals overhanging portionsof said strap and disposed farther apart than the axes of said holes, the holes of each strap being coaxial with the respective holes in the other strap, and struts adjacent and between the axes of said holes and entirely between and united to said straps, each strut comprising a steel strap whose faces are vertical and whose edges are respectively co planar with the edges of the portions of.the firstmentioned straps between said holes.
3. A perambulatorchassis comprising a pair of parallel c shap'ed side frame members; each formed of a steel-strap, each face of each strap lying entirely in a vertical plane, all tour planes beingparallel to one anotheneach strap comprising ,a horizontally extending intermediateportion having axle-receiving holes near the ends of said portion, the holes of each strap being coaxial with the respective holes of the other strap, each strap having end loops curled upward and then toward each other and having terminals overhanging the ends of and substantially spaced vertically from said intermediate portion, and struts adjacent and between and united to said intermediate portions, each strut comprising a steel strap with its faces entirely vertical and of substantially the same cross-section as said members, and shackles hinged to said terminals.
