'l'his invention relates to improvements in handied cups or like receptacles or dishes.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a handled cup or dish formed oi paper or fibrous stock in which the handle is formed integrally with the Wall stock, is collapsi-A ble against the side of the container to permit nest-ing and -is securely supported in erected position for convenience in repeated grasping.
Second, to provide a handled receptacle of this' character in which the handle is strong and rigid even when the receptacle is formed of relatively light stock.
bjects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear` from the description to follow. The invention is denned and pointed out in the claims.
Preferred embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in
which: l y
Fig. l is a perspective view of a cup or receptacleJ embodying the invention with the handle in erected position.
Fig. 2 is a side elevationillustrating steps' in the engagement of the handle members.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation with the' handle members in collapsed position.
Fig. 4 is a plan View' of' the blank' from which the side Wall is' formed showing the manner' in which the same is out and conformedto provide the handle of the invention.
Fig. 5 isI a side elevation illustrating a modified form or embodiment of the invention with' the handle members partially erected.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary' plan view ofV a blank illustrating another modified form or embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 'l is a fragmentary plan View of the Wall' blank illustrating still another form or embodiment of the invention.
The present invention relatesv to the type of cup or receptacle illustrated in the Annen Patent' 2,060,781, issued November 17, 1936, and is an adaptation and an improvement upon' the structure there illustrated. We have illustrated our" invention as embodied in a tapered cup or receptacle as it particularly lends itself to the telescoping or nesting of the cups.
The body or wall IV of the receptacle is formed of a blank 2 of brous container stock, this being arcuately curved, the body blank having a bottom extension 3 separated from the body' prop'erbyv score l for folding around the edge' ofthe bottom which we have not illustrated as Ait forms no part of 'the present' invention.
which overlaps andv is adhesively secured to the opposite endy 6. The sealing flap end 5 of the Wall which is the outer end is out and slit to provide oppostel'y disposed U-sha'ped handle members andv 8.
The openings t and lil of the handle members l and 3 are desirably of such size as to permit a finger being passed intol at least one of them. The handle' member S' is provided with a ynotch"y like opening or slotl il onf its inner edge located centrally thereof While the member l is provided with a dovetail-shaped tongue l2 which may be engaged with the slot l l as shown in Fig. 1 to hold the handle members in erected position for simultaneous grasping.
The tongue l2 is desrably formed by providing angula-rly spaced inwardlyv converging slots i3 in the outer" edge of the handle 'I providing recesses receiving the edges of the slot ll and permitting the deiiecting of the tongue to engage the slot or opening H and support/ing` the handle membersv inside by side position for' convenient grasping.
Steps in the engagement of the handle members are illustrated in Fig. 2. When the handle members are disengaged and when the receptacle is initially formed` they lie close against the sidev of the receptacle permitting nesting.
In theV embodimentshown in Fig. 5, the tongue laf ofthe handle member l5 is formed on the4 outer edge thereof to engage the opening I6 at the outeredge of? the handle member Il. In this structure the tongue can be readily snapped or pressed into the opening lli-perhaps with greater ease than in the embodiment shown in Figs'. 1, 2 and 3'.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. 6,-thetongue i8 oi the handle member i9 is provided/With a hook portion 2U, the tongue being engageable Withthe slit 2| inthe handle member 22, the slit having a return hook-like portion 23 providing a delectable part 2d facilitating the engagement' of the tongue;
In the embodiment ofthe invention shown in N Fig.` 7, the tongue 25 of the handle member 26 projects from the outer edge thereof and is engageable with the slit 2l in the enclosed membery l erected position which' is a verysubstantial advantagefasafter'they are engagedy they are always in position for convenient' grasping.
We have illustrated and described several embodiments or adaptations of the invention. We believe that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt the invention as may be desired.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A cup comprising a side wall formed of a blank having a body portion terminating at one end in a sealingflap conformed at its end and slitted to provide oppositely disposed U-shaped handle members, the sealing flap being lapped upon the outside of the other end of the body portion and adhesively secured thereto to permit the handle members being swung outwardly to erected position, the handle members initially being flush with the surface of the flap and collapsible within said surface to permit nesting, one of the handle members having a nger receiving opening and a slot in the inner edge of the handle member, said slot constituting an extension of the opening, the other having a tongue with an enlarged outer end, said tongue being disposed on the outer edge of the handle member and being engageable with said slot when the handle members are erected, the vertical dimensions of the opening being greater than that of the slot to permit the enlarged outer end of the tongue to be inserted through the opening and thereafter the tongue to be shifted laterally of itself for engagement of the inner narrow portion of the tongue with upper and lower edges of the slot. 4
2. A cup comprising a side wall having overlapping ends adhesively secured together, the outer overlapping end portion being cut to provide oppositely disposed loop-like collapsible handle members capable of being swung out- Wardly into inwardly diverging relation, one of said handle members having a nger receiving opening and a recess in the inner edge of the handle member and the other handle member having a tongue with an enlarged outer end, said tongue being interlockingly engageable with said recess when the handle members are in erected position, said recess constituting an extension of the opening, the vertical dimensions of the opening being greater than that of the recess to permit the enlarged outer end of the tongue to be inserted through the opening and thereafter the tongue to be shifted laterally of itself for engagement of the inner narrow portion of the tongue with the upper and lower edges of the recess.
