This invention relates to jack springs for supporting the border wire above a frame and for applying an outward stress to the springs of the assembled cushion and to the assembled cushion and jack springs.
Difficulty has always been experienced in the art of constructing spring cushions in providing means for supporting the border wire above the frame and for stretching the spring assembly sidewardly toward the frame edges.
In constructing a spring cushion, a frame of wood or other relatively strong material has strips of zigzag springs stretched from the forward to the back edge thereof and secured in place by suitable clips. The spring strips are set on an arc of much smaller radius than the arc of the bolster which the strips assume when stretched across the frame. Wire clips interconnect the springs interjacent the ends across the seat and a border wire extends along the sides and front of the seat above the frame. Suitable means are provided (not herein illustrated) for supporting the border wire above the frame at the front edge of the seat cushion, and jack springs of the present invention are utilized for supporting the border wire above the frame at the side edges thereof. The jack springs are also useful in providing a tension to the spring assembly outwardly toward the side edges of the cushion.
In one form of the invention the jack spring embodies a wire loop of a diameter to permit the wire of the spring strip to be threaded therethrough. Arms extend outwardly from the loop at substantially right angles to each other, with one arm of greater length than the other. The ends of the arms are bent laterally and rearwardly to provide feet by which the spring is secured to the frame and to the border wire.
In another form of the invention, the longer arm and loop has the second arm extending downwardly and formed into second loop substantially the size of the first'and further extended downwardly and formed into a large loop and extended outwardly to form the attaching arm having a foot thereon. The second small loop has a coil spring secured thereto for pulling the loop toward the outer edge of the frame, and the larger loop, being more resilient than the smaller loops, permits the jack spring and the supporting strip and border wire to deflect.
Accordingly, the main objects of the invention are: to provide a jack spring. which is capable of being threaded on a spring strip for supporting a border wire against suitable deflection while applying an outward tension to the spring strip; to support the border wire at the side of the cushion and draw the spring assembly outwardly toward the cushion sides by jack springs having a loop through which the edge springs are threaded and which jack springs have feet by which the arms thereof are secured to the border wire and frame; to provide a multilooped jack spring with a large loop and with arms having feet which are attachable to a border wire and frame for applying an outward tension to a spring assembly when the outermost springs of which are threaded through one of the loops of the jack springs by a spring secured to the side portion of the frame and to a second loop, and, in general, to provide a spring structure having the side portion of the border wire resiliently supported above the frame and the spring assembly drawn outwardly toward the sides, which is simple in construction and economical of manufacture.
Other objects and features of novelty of the invention will be specifically pointed out or will become apparent when referring, for a better understanding of the invention, to the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a broken plan view of a seat cushion having the border wire and the spring assembly stressed at the side edges by jack springs of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1, taken on the line 22 thereof;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the jack spring illustrated in Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a view of structure, similar to that illustrated in Fig. 1,.showing a'modified form thereof;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view of the structure illustrated in Fig. 4, taken on the line 5-5 thereof, and
Fig. 6 is a view in perspective of the jack spring illustrated in Fig. 5.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 4, a cushion i0 is illustrated, having a frame ll comprising a front frame element l2, a rear frame element 13 and side frame elements [4 which are connected together to form a rectangular frame member. A plurality of strips of zigzag springs I5 are secured across the front and rear frame elements l2 and I3 by suitable clips Hi. The assembled spring strips are interconnected by wire clips laterally across the assembly. A border wire I8 is secured to the rear frame element l3 in a manner to extend above the side elements l4 and the front element l2 of the frame member l. The border wire is secured against downward deflection at the front. end by suitable spring. means (not herein illustrated).
Referring to Figs. 2 and 3, a spring element i9 is illustrated as being employed for supporting the border wire is above the side frame element l4 while providing an outward force to the assembly of the spring strips I5. As illustrated more specifically in Fig. 3, the spring element I9.- comprises a large loop 2| having an arm 2-2- extending therefrom which isbentlaterallyatZS- and rearwardly at 24 to provide an attaching foot therefor. The wire extends upwardly at 25 from the loop 2| and is formed into asmall loop 26 from which it extends upwardly at 21 and again formed into a small loop 28. A second arm 29 extends substantially at right angles to the portion 2? and is bent at right angles at 3 I, and reversely bent at 32 to form an attaching footon the endof the arm.29. The spring strips at'theside edges of the assembly arethreaded through the upper loop 28 of the spring elements I9, after which the foot on. the end of the arm 29 is attached to the border, element. [8 by a clamping band 33. The lower arm. 22 of. each spring. element I9 has its. foot clamped. to the inner surface of the side, elements I 4 of the frame H by suitable clips I6. Straps 34. are secured to the outer face of. the side frame elements l4 opposite, each spring elementlfi, having aninwardly directed end 35 containing an aperture in. which the end hook on a coil spring 36 is secured, the other end of the spring. 36 being hooked into the central loop 26. The springs. provide an outward tension to. the spring, elements I9 which pivot in the clips. [6 and produce an outward pull to the side. edges of. the spring and to the spring strips I5.- thereof. This pull also applies; an upward tension tothe foot on the end of the arm 29 to thereby assist in resisting the downward deflection of the side portion of the border wire [8. The spring provides a. double function of resistingv the deflection of the side portion of the border Wire and. also to provide an outward. tension to. the spring assembly. The amount oftension provided may be regulated by the number of spring elements l9 employed and the strength of the springs 36 which are utilized therewith.
Referring to Figs. 5 and 6, a furtherv form of the invention is illustrated, that wherein the side elements 3'! of the border frame are of greater height than the front and rear border, elements l2 and I3. A spring. element 38,- has. a. small loop 39 and arms 4! and 42 extend therefrom at substantially right, angles to eachother. The arm 52 is of shorter length than the arm. 4|, each arm being provided with a foot. portion 43 similar to the foot portions on the spring element I9 of Fig. 3. The endmost springs 15 adjacent to the frame elements 31 are threaded through the loops 39 of the spring elements 38, and thereafter the spring elements. 38, have the foot 13 011 the arm 41 secured by a band 33110. the border wire l8. The short arm 42. is then secured by a clip l6 to the side frame elements 31. When securing the arm 42 to the elements 31, the springs stretched between the front and rear border elements 12 and [3 are drawn toward the side elements 3! and tension is applied to the arm 4! which resists the deflection of the border wire IS. The springs 38 have the dual function of applying an outward tension to the spring strips l5 and applying an upward force to the border element l8 to resist its deflection.
What is claimed is:
l. A- spring for supporting aborder wire at the edge of, a seat cushion against downward and in ward deflection, comprising a spring wire formed into a large loop with one end portion extended to provide an arm having an attaching foot, with the other end portion extended and formed into two small spaced loops which are spaced from said large loop, and further extended to form a second arm having'an attaching foot.
2. A; spring for supporting a border wire at the edge of a cushion against downward and inward deflection, comprising a spring wire formed to provide two spaced adjacent loops and a large loop spaced therefrom, said loops being disposed in substantial alignment, the portions extending from the endmost loops forming arms, having attaching feet formed on the ends.
3.. A spring for supporting a border wire at the edge of a cushion against downward and inward deflection, comprising a spring wire formed to provide two spaced loops and a large loop spaced therefrom, said loops being disposed in substantial alignment, the portions extending from the endmost loops forming arms having attaching feet formed on the ends, said arms being in diverging relation from the loops outwardly relative to each other and said feet being formed on the same side of a plane through the loops.
l. A spring for supporting a border wire at the edge of a spring cushion, comprising a spring wire formed in U-shape providing a pair, of arms extending from a web portion, the center of the web portion being formed into a small loop, one end of the junction of the web portion and one armbeing formed into a similar small loop, the junction between the other end of the web portion and the other arm being formed into a large loop.
5; A spring for supporting a border Wire at the edge of a spring cushion, comprising a spring wire formed in U-shape providing a pair of arms extending from a web portion, the center of the web; portion being formed into a small loop, one end, of the junction of the web portion and one arm. being formed into a similar small loop, the junction. between the other end of the web por tion and theother. arm being formed into a large loop, the ends of the arms being bent outwardly away from a plane through the arms to form attaching feet.
6. A spring for supporting a border wire at the edgeof a spring cushion, comprising a spring wire formed in U-shape providing a pair of arms extending from a Web portion, the center of the web portion being formed into a small loop, one end of the junction of the web portion and one arm being formed into a similar small loop, the junction between the other end of the web portion and the other arm being formed into a iarge loop, the ends of the arms being bent outwardly away from a plane through the arms to form attaching feet, said arms being in diverging relationship relative to the web portion.

Ina spring assembly, of spring strips made of wirebent in zigzag form aframe, a pluralitystretched across the frame, a border wire surrounding said spring strips, and a spring having a first loop receiving the wire of the endmost spring strip and having an arm extending therefrom and attached to the border wire, said spring having a second loop to which a coil spring attached to the frame is secured, said spring having below said second loop a large loop from which an arm extends having an attaching foot which is secured to the frame whereby said spring provides resistance against downward deflection of the border wire and the inward movement of the endmost spring strip.
