Description

ARTHUR A WORGAN CHAIR LEG EXTENSION Filed Nov. 30, 1951 April '7,` 1953 Flc. '2
`Patented Apr. 7, 1953 *i UNITED sTATEs PATENT GFIFICEl cnamv LEG EXTENsoN vArthur Wol-gan, Manchester, Conn. Application November ao, 1951, serial No. 259,055
This inventionrelatesto a chair leg extension adapted to be used in sets-to rai-se the height of a chair seat. The device is particularly useful in making the chair seat the proper height V'for a child to sit ata table.A i I g Onerfeature of the invention is a device which will be light in weight, will be readily attachable and removable, and which will still be light in weight so that the weight of the chair will not be unduly increased. Another feature is an ex-` tension' which v-wirll accommodate several `shapes and contours of chair leg and which will remain in place until deliberately removed, but which will not mar the chair.
Other objects and advantages will .be apparent from the specification and claims, and from the accompanying drawings which illustrate an embodiment of the invention.
Fig. l shows a set of the extensions applied to a chair.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the device.-
Fig. 4 is a sectional view online 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 3;
The device is intended to be sold in sets such that the devices 2 may be applied to the legs 4 l of a chair 6, thereby raising the chair seat nearer to the top 8 of a table I0. In this way the chair may be adjusted to accommodate a young child especially in order that he may more readily work at or eat at the table. I
Each device 2 is preferably made from a moldable light-weight material, such as a plastic. and includes a cylindrical hollow portion or sleeve I2 adapted to fit over the chair leg, and a conical por-tion I4 projecting from the lower end of cylindrical portion I2. The conical portion ends in a blunt nose I6 which allows the chair equipped with the devices toV slide readily over a rug or floor.
V To control the depth that the chair leg projects into the device the conical portion I4, which is also hollow for light weight, is provided with inwardly projecting, intersecting webs lwhich are preferably integral with the conical portion I4 and also integral with each other. The Webs merge into a center core 20, and the webs land core all terminate approximately at the junction of the cylindrical and conical portions to form a substantially flat surface 22 engageable with the end of the chair leg.
The devices may be held on the chair legs by elastic bands. As shown, therupper ends of the cylindrical yportions I2 have pairs of parallel, axial-extending slots 24 preferably-uniformly spaced around the upper edge of the device. A
6 Claims. (Cl. 155-88) ring or band 26 of elastic material such as rubber is placed in these slots to form chordwise extending strips of material which engage the'chair leg a-s best shown infFig. 4, and hold the device securely but removably in position. This holding means will accommodate itself to different sizes =of chair leg within limits and will hold the device securely in position. The device isv shown applied to a chair 'havingtubular legs, forwhich the device i-s well suited valthough other types of chair legs will be equally well accommodated. Y
Where the range of chair leg dimensions is extreme, the device may be made in several sizes with the cylindrical portions I2 being graduated in the several sizes. The sets of extensions may also be produced in graduated lengths as will be apparent. It is thus apparent that the dimensions of the device are not critical but may be varied such that several sizes may be made available.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific embodiment herein illustrated and described, but may be used in other ways without departure from its spirit as defined by the following claims.
I claim:
1. A device for releasable attachment to chair legs for raising the height of the chair seat, including a hollow sleeve portion to receive the end of the chair leg, and an integral extension portion coaxial withV the sleeve and extending from one end thereof, said extension portion being hollow and having supporting struts therein terminating substantially at the junction of the portions for engagement by the end of the chair leg.
2. A device for releasable attachment to chair legs for raising the height of the chair seat, including a hollow sleeve portion to receive the end of the chair leg, and an integral extension portion coaxial with the sleeve and extending from one end thereof, said extension portion being hollow and having supporting struts therein terminating substantially at the junction of the portions for engagement by the end of the chair leg, the end oi the sleeve remote from the extension portion having means thereon to engage with the chair leg to retain the device in position.
3. A device for releasable attachment to chair legs for raising the height of the chair seat, including a hollow sleeve portion -to receive the end of the chair leg, and anl integral extension portion coaxial with the sleeve and extending from l one end thereof, said extension portion being Y hollow and having supporting struts therein terminating substantially at the junction of the portions for engagement by the end of the chair leg, the end of the sleeve remote from the extension portion having axially extending slots therein, and resilient means extending across the sleeve between the slots to engage with a chair leg when positioned in said device.
4. A device for releasable attachment to chair legs for raising the height of the chair seat, including a hollow sleeve portion to receive the end of the chair leg, and an integral extension portion coaxial with the sleeve and extending from one end thereof, said extension portion being hollow and having supporting struts therein terminating substantially at the junctionof the'portions for engagement by the-end of the chair leg, said extension portion being tapered toward the free end thereof.
5. A device for releasable attachment to chair legs lfor raising the height of the chair seat, inclnding a hollow sleeve portion to receive the end of the chair leg, and an integral extension portion Acoaxial with the sleeve and extending from one end thereof, said extension portion being hollow and having Supporting struts therein termina-ting 'substantially at the junction of the portions for engagement by the end of the chair leg, said struts extending transversely of thehollow extension portion and being integral 30 therewith.
6. A device for releasable attachment to chair Y legs for raising the height of the chair seat, including a hollow sleeve portion to receive the end of the chair leg,Y and an integral extension portion coaxial with the sleeve and extending from one end thereof, said extension portion being hollow and having supporting struts therein terminating substantially at the junction of the portions for engagement by the end of the chair leg, the end of the sleeve remote from the extension portion having axially extending slots therein, and resilient means in the form of a band positioned in the slots and extending across the sleeve between the slots and forming a continuous retaining means for the device.
