Description
April 7, 1953 G. L. DONOVAN 2633,6l5
PAPER CLIP FOR DRAWERS Filed Oct. 26, 1951 N VENTOR GEORGE L. DONOVAN AT TORNEY Patented Apr. 7, 1953 PAPER CLIP FOR DRAWERS George L. Donovan, Vancouvcr, British Columbia, Canada Application October 26, 1951, Serial No. 253307 1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in clips for paper money drawers of cash registers and for paper files and the like. i
The objects of the invention are to provide a clip for holding down papers in a file or drawer which will keep the papers in convenient and tidy position when filed or held thereunder; to provide a clip which is exceptionally simple in form and one in which the paper Contacting member is the only spring member; to provide also a clip where the paper contacting member can be lifted far enough to give clear access to the papers therein, and which can be moved to engage the papers by simply moving the drawer which has the clip fitted thereto, to closed position.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional View of a money drawer fitted with the invention.
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the invention.
Figure 3 is a plan view looking up.
Figure 4 is a perspective View of the invention showing a modified form of the base to the clip head.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
The numeral l indicates generally the base structure of a cash register in which a cash drawer 2 is slidable. The drawer consists of a front wall 4, side walls 5, one only shown, a back wall 6 and a bottom wall l. A horizontal strip 8 is Secured to the side walls and the back wall 6, which serves to prevent bills and cheques from slipping out and over the back wall of the drawer and becoming temporarily lost. The strip 8 serves also as a support for the base to of the clip I I. i
The base n is a box-like structure consisting of an apertured plate l2 having depending sides ld which support at their forward ends inwardly projecting cams [5. The apertured plate 12 is adapted to be screwed to the underside of the strip 8, as shown in Figure 1, and is provided with a pair of short spaced slots IB, the outer edges of which are aligned with the inner opposing edges of the cams I5. The cams are each provided with an inclined edge ll, which edges are directed upwardly towards each other and which may terminate in vertical portions !8. The sides I 4 of the clip are apertured as at !9 and form bearings for the pivotal members 21 of a spring bale 22. The spring bale 22 is U- shaped, having spaced legs 23 and a base 24 forming a presser foot, which may be covered with rubber tubing 25 to reduce the noise of said foot striking the bottom wall of the drawer 2.
In Figure 4 the base IUA of the clip HA is provided with a standard 21 having a bed plate 28 for mounting on a file panel 30, so that the clip may be used for holding papers for reference on a desk or otherwise as may be desired.
In use, the bale 22 is raised, causing the free ends of the legs 23 to move upwardly between the converging inclined edges or cam faces ll, thus compressing the free ends of the spring bale. The bale is swung until the free ends of the legs 23 ride onto the vertical portions 18 or into the slots !6, the bale will then be resiliently held in the position in which it is left, but as soon as said bale is lowered to the point where the inner ends of the legs ride on the cam faces ll the outward spring of the bale will cause it to Swing downwardly and hold it with its presser foot 24 in firm contact with the bills or other papers in the drawer.
If the inward movement of the drawer is reasonably fast, the inner ends 'of the legs 23 will strike the edge of the horizontal strip 8 and be forced onto the cam faces ll, so that the presser foot 25 is swung into grpping contact with the contents of the drawer.
What I claim as my invention is:
A clip comprising a clip base, a panel supporting the clip base in spaced relation thereto, said clip base having sides and front walls depending therefrom, a pair of cam faces formed upon opposing edges of the front walls, said cam faces having a vertical portion and an inclined portion, a U-shaped bale having its free ends pivotally mounted in the sides approximately at the level of the intersection of the vertical and inclined portions of the cam faces, said bale having legs adapted to normally engage the cams, said bale being spring tensioned and adapted to engage the cam faces to compress the bale adjacent its pivotal mounting as the bale is raised, said cam faces serving to urge the outer end of the bale into contact with the panel when engaged by the inclined cam faces, said clip base being above the sides and having a pair of spaced slots adapted to receive the legs of the bale and engage said legs when said bale is in raised position above the level of the base.
