Application September 3, 1948, Serial No. 47,618
6 Claims.
This invention relates to bed structures and in particular to those of folding type for use in a chair frame or the like.
In the folding bed art, as exemplified by our invention, an important object is to stow the ioldable structure as low as possible in the chair frame and at the same time reduce to a minimum the effort required in folding and unfolding the bed portion. This has resulted in the making of chair frames with an open front which is partly closed by a cross member adapted to be completed in appearance by a strip piece borne by a foldable part of the structure.
An important object of our invention is to provide in association with foldable spring sections of the bed frame a linkage and strip supporting means that will be easily foldable with a minimum number of motions and one which has few parts, can be made at reduced cost, can be easily assembled and is light in weight so that a woman or child can open and close the bed without strenuous effort.
With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises certain constructions hereinafter described and then particularly pointed out in the claims and a preferred embodiment of our invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of a foldable bed structure shown in association with a chair frame of well known form,
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing the parts as they would appear after the first closing fold movement,
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 but showing the bed structure completely folded into the chair,
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken through one side of the frame on the line il of Figure 1,
Figure 5 is a view in perspective of a rest member and section of bed frame upon which it is mounted, and
Figure 6 is a view in perspective of a corner of the outer section of the frame showing a foldable end member.
Referring to the drawings in detail, Ill indicates a conventional chair frame in which is mounted the foldable bed frame, shown without a mattress, and including a mounting frame it which is secured in the lower part of the chair frame in any suitable manner and presenting side plates I2 having vertical side supports l3 between which is pivoted as at It the upwardly extending arms I5 of an inner hinged bed section it. One side only of the structure is shown since both are alike and the bed frame consists of said inner hinged section 16 having pivoted thereto as at H an inner main section !8, which in turn is hinged as at IE to a fold section 26. The latter is pivoted as at 2| to an outer section 22 having at the outer edge thereof an end board 23 mounted for swinging movement on studs 24 in the upper end of corner pieces 25 which, when the bed is folded as shown in Figure 2, engage rests 25 mounted on the inner main section 18. The latter has pivoted thereto as at 2? the ends of a swing lever 28 and a fold link 29. The swing lever is pivoted as at 30 to a side plate 12 and is connected thereto by a spring 3i which cushions the drop of the folded bed frame into the chair.
The fold link 29 at its other end is pivoted as at 32 to one end of a strip bar lever 33 fulcrumed at M on the fold section 20 and pivotally connect to a strip bar link 35 with a strip bar 36 which extends across the under side of the frame 2t and carries the foot members 31 at the sides of the frame. The bar 36 has hinged thereto as at 38 a front strip 3% carrying a bracket 49 for pivotally connecting the strip 39 to the outer section 22, through a pull link 4|.
The bar 36 which is substantially U-shaped is pivoted as at 42 between side or front strip brackets 43 which are suitably fixed as by soldering or welding to the fold section 28. Each bracket 43 has pivoted thereto as at ll the end of a leg link 44 for closing the outer leg 45 which is pivoted as at 46 to the outer frame section 22. The chair frame ID has a frame board 33 extending across the front thereof, and when, as seen in Figure 3, the bed structure is folded into place in the chair, the front strip 39 rests on the upper edge of the frame board 48 and coacts therewith to close the front of the chair and bed structure.
The feature of our invention resides in the mounting of the front strip 39 and its associated parts including the fold section 20. When the outer section is lifted and folded to the position shown in Figure 2, the strip 39 is pulled up against and parallel to the strip bar 38 through the action of the pull link 41. At the same time, the pulling action of the lever 33, through the links 29 and 35 positions the strip bar 36 also parallel to the fold section 20 so that the foot members 31 abut said section to make a compact nesting of the parts while the legs 45 swing to closed position by push of the leg link 45 under influence of the right-angled movement of the outer section 22 with respect to the brackets it, to which the ends of said leg links are pivoted. In a single fold of the parts, it will be seen that all of the positioning of the parts is completed to provide for a subsequent lowering of the folded.
structure into the chair frame so that the front strip 39 will come to rest on top of and flush With the frame board 48 to conceal effectively the bed structure, to complete the appearance of the chair in the front thereof and hold the front strip securely and firmly in place so that it cannot be distinguished from the usual front closure as commonly employed in such articles of furniture.
Our invention is not to be restricted to the precise details of construction shown since various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the scope of the invention or sacrificing the advantages to be derived from its use.
What we claim is:
1. In a chair bed, in combination, a chair frame including a front closure board, a mounting frame secured in the lower part of said chair frame, an inner bed section pivotally mounted with respect to said mounting frame, an outer section, a fold section pivotally connecting said inner and outer sections, depending strip brackets fixed to said fold section at opposite sides thereof, a laterally extending strip bar provided to said brackets, a front strip hinged to said strip bar and pivoted linking means connecting said fold section and the strip bar to position the front strip on said front closure board and the strip bar on the mounting frame when the bed sections are folded into said chair frame to close the front of the chair frame and conceal said sections.
2. In a chair bed of the character set forth in claim 1 in which said strip bar is substantially U-shaped, and foot members fixed to the ends of said strip bar.
3. In a chair bed of the character set forth in claim 1 in which said pivoted linking means includes a strip bar lever 33 fulcrumed to said fold section 20 and fold links 29 and strip bar links 35 connecting said lever at opposite ends with the inner section 18 and the strip bar 36 respectively, for moving said strip bar and foot members to a position to and against the fold section when the parts are closed.
4. In a chair bed of the character set forth in claim 1 including a bracket on said front strip, and a strip link connecting the strip with said outer section whereby when the latter is folded parallel to said inner section the strip abuts said strip bar.
5. In a chair bed of the character set forth in claim 1 including a pull link for connecting the strip 39 and the outer section 22, and said pivoted linking means including a fold link, a strip bar lever and a strip bar link fulcrumed on said fold section and joining the inner section and said strip bar whereby when the fold section and the outer section are folded with respect to each other, the strip bar and the front strip are parallel with said fold section.
6. In a chair bed of the character set forth in claim 1 including a pull link 4| for connecting the strip 39 and the outer section 22 and said pivoted linking means including a fold link 29, a strip bar lever 33 and a strip bar link 35 fulcrumed on the fold section 20 and joining the inner section l8 and the strip bar 36 whereby when the fold section 20 and the outer section 22 are folded with respect to each other, the strip bar abuts the depending strip brackets 43 and said front strip 48 and strip bar 36 are parallel to said fold section.
