VEHICLE-BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 262,999, dated August :22, 1882.

Be it known that], SAMUEL J. VANCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waverly, in the county of Morgan and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brakes for Vehicles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
- My invention relates to wagon-brakes and leather holders used in connection therewith; and the nature thereof consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, and novel combination of the parts, hereinafter described.
In the accompanying plates of drawings, Figure 1 represents a brake with my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 represents the clamping device used for holding the shoe in position and securing the leather on the shoe.
In the drawings, A represents the piece to which the brake is attached. B is the clampbolt, which is used to hold the shoe to the piece A, and also to hold the leather on the shoe. The shoe D is provided with depressions r1 dfor allowing the arms upon the clampbolt- B to sink out of the way of the wagon-tire when the brake is in use. Thepiece A is provided with a slot, a, for the free movement of the draw-bolt B, and the shoe D is provided with a slot for the same purpose.
