Application November 10, 1949, Serial No; 125,512
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to attachments for clothes hangers, and, more particularly to an attachment whereby a clothes hanger maybe provided with an auxiliary hook smaller than the hooks usually provided in clothes hangers, which auxiliary hook is particularly adapted to grip. a clothesline, so as to support. and hold the hanger against sliding movement thereon.
One, object of, this invention is to provide an attachmentoi. the above, nature which, may be readily. applied to substantially. any type of clothes. hanger which. comprises a central hook and oppositely-extending arms.
Another object istcprovide an attachment of the above nature which willrequire no alteration of the clothes hanger structure, and which will not become accidentally. separated therefrom.
A further object is to provide an attachment of'the above nature'which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to install and manipulate, compact; ornamental in appearance, and very efficient and-durablein use.
With these and other objects in view, there have beenillustratedon-the accompanying drawingthree forms in which the invention may conveniently be embodied in practice.
In the'drawing,
Fig. 1" is a; perspective view showing the first form of attachment as it would appear in use for supporting: a hanger upon. a. clothesline.
Fig. 2is a. fragmentary front view; of the same on a l larger scale.
Big. 3 is atop view'of thesame; the hook of; the clothes hanger being shown. in, section.
Fig. .4 is a. fragmentary perspcctiveview; showme. ax. second; form of; the: attachment as, it wouldappear whcninnse for sup orting-a hanger upon; a, clothesline.
Fig. is atopview of the same, the hook'of the clothes-hanger: being shown insection, and the clothesline being omitted.
Fig. 61is a perspective view showing a third form of the attachment as it would appear when-applied: to" a wire clothes; hanger;
Y Referring now to thedrawing, in which like referencenumerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral it indicates the, first form. of. attachment which is adaptedto be applied to a clothes hanger 11.0)?
the type whichcomprises an. upwardlyrextending central wire1 hook llv and a pair of oppositelyextending inclined arms 1.2,. 53,, of substantial thickness and. usually made of. wood.
The. attachmentll) is preferably. formed by bending a length of suitable stillv wire sores. to form a small hook l4 having a width which is less than the uncompressed diameter of a clothesline L upon which the attachment Iii is' tobe supported, whereby said clothesline L will be firmly gripped and longitudinal sliding of the attachment Ill thereon will be prevented. The free end of the hook I4 is bent to. form asmall eye It which will facilitatethe insertion of the lineiL in the hook, while the opposite end of the hook It is extended downwardly to provide avertical stem it which is preferably of such a length that the hook l-i will be disposed within the lower portion of the hook ll of the hanger H upon which the attachment It is to be used.
At the lower end of the stem Hi, the wire thereof is bent horizontally and then in a clockwise direction so as to provide a horizontal loop i? which is closed in alateral direction and adapted to loosely embrace the stem of the hanger hook H. Adjacent the loop I? the wire is provided with a short outwardly curved portion I8 (Fig. 3) which is of a suffioient length to extend to the edge of the hanger H, at which point the wire is bent downwardly so as to provide a vertical leg l9 which is adapted to overlie the rear surface of the hanger H.
At the lower end of the leg I9, the wire extends horizontally so as to form an arm 28' which is adapted to be engaged underneath the hanger H at the junction of the arms l2, la. The arm 28 is terminated in a small, upwardly-extending eye 2! which is adapted to engage the front surfaceof the hanger H and thus serve as a detent for holding the attachment It in place upon said hanger.
Operation of first form In assembly, the-horizontal loop I! will be slid onto the hook I I and then downwardly to a position in which the small hook i 4 is disposed below the hanger hook H. In this position ofthe. attachment ill, the loop i"! will engage the top surface of the hanger at the base of the hook I l, and the inherent resiliency of the attachment will permit the horizontal arm 25 to be swung under the hanger H until the eye 21 snaps into place against the front surface thereof.
Thus, it will be seen that the loop H, the curved portion l8, the vertical leg [9; the horizontal arm 20, and the eye 2.! provide a substantially C-shaped portionwhich resiliently embraces the body of the hanger I-I so that. said hanger may be securely supported upon a clothe,- line by meansof the small auxiliaryhook; I 4'.
Second form The second form of the invention is embodied in an attachment 22 (Figs. 4 and 5), comprising a small hook 23 adapted to grip the clothesline L, and provided with a small eye 24 at one side thereof, and a vertical stem 25 at the other side thereof. The stem 25 is preferably of such a length that the small hook 23 will be disposed adjacent the lower portion of the hanger hook H when the lower end of said stem is adjacent the base of said hook II, as in the first form of the invention.
The lower end of the stem 25 is bent horizontally and then in a clockwise direction so as to form an open loop 25 which is adapted to loosely embrace the base of the hook II, and which extends rearwardly to a downwardly bent portion forming a vertical leg 2'! adapted to engage the rear surface of the hanger H with which the attachment 22 is intended to be used.
The lower end of the vertical leg 21 is bent forwardly so as to form a horizontal arm 28 which is adapted to engage the lower surface of the hanger H at the junction of the arms I2, I3, and which terminates in an upwardly extending eye 29 for engaging the front surface of the hanger H.
It will be noted by reference to Fig. 5 that the open loop 26 in the second form of the invention is adapted to extend across substantially more than half of the upper surface of the hanger H and that the vertical stem 25 is adapted to be disposed closely adjacent the base of the hanger hook II, thus permitting the open loop 25 to be snapped around the base of the hook I I after the horizontal arm 28 has been placed in assembled position against the lower surface of said hanger.
Operation of second form The attachment 22 will be assembled with the hanger H merely by applying the horizontal arm 28 against the lower surface of the hanger at the junction of the hanger arms I2, 23, in such a position that the eye 29 engages the front surface of the hanger while the vertical leg 2? is disposed adjacent the rear surface thereof. The vertical stem 25 will then be thrust forwardly and to the right, as viewed in Figs. 4 and 5, so as to snap the open loop 26 around the base of the hanger hook II, thus placing the small auxiliary hook 23 in its final assembled position adjacent the lower portion of the hook i I.
The hook 23 may now be applied to a clothes line L to support the hanger H securely and prevent longitudinal sliding or accidental removal of said hanger with relation to said line.
Third form The third form of the invention is embodied in an attachment 3!! (Fig. 6) which is adapted to be applied to a wire clothes hanger W of the type which has a pair of oppositely-extending arms 3|, 32 supported at the center of the hanger by upwardly-extending portions 33, 35 which converge so as to form a notch 35, and which are connected by a twisted joint 35 above said notch. The upwardly-extending portion 34 is continued above the twisted joint 35 and curved laterally and downwardly to provide a large clothes hanger hook 31, while the upwardly extending portion 33 terminates in an end 33 disposed closely adjacent the hook 3? above the twisted joint 35.
The attachment 30 comprises a small hook 39 which is of a suitable width to closely embrace and grip the clothesline L. One side of the hook 39 terminates in an outturned small eye 48 while 4 the other side of said hook extends downwardly to provide a vertical stem 4|, the lower end of which is bent horizontally and then clockwise so as to provide a horizontal loop 42.
The horizontal loop $2 is adapted to slidably embrace the stem of the hanger hook 31, and is constructed in such a manner that the top of the small hook 39 will be disposed somewhat below the top of the hanger hook 3! when said horizontal loop 42 is in abutting engagement with the upper end 38 of the hanger portion 33.
The horizontal loop 42 extends rearwardly and then downwardly to provide a vertical leg 43 which is approximately aligned with the stem 4| and which is bent forwardly and then rearwardly at its lower end to provide a horizontal U-shaped detent arm 44.
It will be noted that the horizontal detent arm 44 is adapted to enter between the upwardly extending convergent portions 33, 3d of the hanger W and is slightly wider at its closed front end than at its rear end, so that it may be snapped into assembled position where it will be held by resilient action of the hanger portions 33, 3
Further, the weight of the hanger W will tend to hold the attachment 3% assembled therewith when said attachment is supported by means of the small hook 39, due to the wedging action of the horizontal arm 44 between the convergent hanger portions In order to assist in holding the attachment 3!] firmly in position upon the hanger W, and also to prevent accidental rotation of said attachment, the wire of the horizontal arm 44 is bent outwardly and forwardly so as to provide a small lateral hook 45 which is adapted to partially embrace the vertical hanger portion 34.
Operation of third form The third form of the attachment may be assembled with the hanger W merely by sliding the hanger hook 3'! through the horizontal loop 42 of the attachment 30 so that said loop is brought into abutment with the upper wire end 38, and then snapping the U-shaped arm 44 into position between the hanger portions 43, 44. The small hook 39 may then be engaged with a clothesline L so as to grip said clothesline and support the hanger W securely against sliding movement upon and accidental separation from said line.
Inasmuch as the top of the small hook 39 is disposed below the top of the hanger hook 37 in the assembled position of the attachment 30, it will be understood that said attachment may, if desired, be applied to the hanger W in a, reversed position in which the small hook 39 will be disposed substantially within the large hook 31, the horizontal detent arm 44 in this instance being inserted between the hanger portions 33, 34 from a direction opposite to that shown in Fig. 6.
While there have been disclosed in this specification several forms in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that these forms are shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not to be limited to the specific disclosures, but may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all modifications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claim.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new, and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent, is:
In an attachment for a clothes hanger of the type having a pair of substantially horizontal oppositely-extending arms and a central upstanding vertical stem terminating in a substantially U-shaped vertical upper hook, an auxiliary wire member having a small vertical upper hook shaped to grip a clothesline to prevent said clothes hanger from accidentally sliding thereon, said auxiliary member having an intermediate substantially semi-circular open loop lying in a hor-i-' zontal plane for embracing the vertical stem of said hanger, and a downwardly-extending vertical leg having a laterally bent lower end extending in the same direction as said intermediate loop for embracing the lower portion of said clothes hanger.
