Zlihis: invention relates to new. and useful immovements and structural refinements in apparatus for crimping wrappers, and the principal object of the invention is to facilitate convenient and expeditious folding or crimping of end portions of wrappers on substantially cylindrical articles, such as for example, rolls of paper, spools, cylindrical containers, or the like.

An important feature of the invention resides in its adjustability to accommodate different lengths of articles which are to be wrapped.

Other advantages of the invention lie in its simplicity of construction, in its expeditious operation, and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.

With the above more important objects and features in view, and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure l is a top plan view of the invention;

Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof, taken substantially in the plane of the line 2-2 in Figure 1;

Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 3--3 in Figure 2;

Figure 4 is a fragmentary side elevational view illustrating the invention in use while crimping end portions of a wrapper on a cylindrical article; and

Figure 5 is an end View of the wrapped article, that is, after the end portions of the wrapper have been crimped by the instant apparatus.

Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a wrapper crimping apparatus which is designated generally by the reference character It! and embodies in its construction an inclined base plate 12 such as may be conveniently supported by a suitable framework [4, the opposite side portions of the base l2 being provided with sets of parallel, inwardly extending slots l6, as is best shown in Figure 1. For purposes of reinforcement, pairs of straps l8 are suitably secured to the underside of the base [2 at the opposite longitudinal edges of the slots l6, and a set of clamping screws 20, equipped with wing nuts 22, are adjustably positioned in the slots, as shown.

The strap 30 is secured in any suitable manner, such as for example, by welding, to the strap 32, and both straps are provided with upstanding sets of crimping teeth 36, 38 having rounded edges. The sets of teeth 36, 38 are longitudinally staggered, as best shown in Figure 2, and it will be observed that the inner teeth 36 are somewhat lower than the outer teeth 38, as is best shown in Figure 3.

The crimping members 24 define therebetween apassage 40 extending from the relatively high end 26 of the base l2 to the relatively low end 28, and by virtue of this inclination, a cylindrical article 42 which is to be wrapped in a wrapper 44, may be rolled through the passage between the members 24, so that end portions 46 of the wrapper 44 which project beyond the ends of the article 42, are engaged and folded or crimped by the teeth 36, 38 as the article is rolled through the passage.

Eventually, when the article emerges from the apparatus, the end portions 46 of the wrapper 42 are crimped or folded at the ends of the article, as is clearly shown in Figure 5.

By loosening the wing nuts 22, and sliding the belts or screws 20 in the slots [6, the crimping members 24 may be moved closer or further apart, so as to adjust the apparatus to accommodate articles of different lengths. Moreover, it is to be noted that the end portions of the members 24 adjacent the relatively high end 26 of the base l2 are divergent as indicated at 43 in Figure 1, so as to afford a funnel-shaped entrance to facilitate insertion of the articles into the passage 40. This entrance is indicated by the reference character 50 in Figure 1.

A transverse aligning bar 52 is suitably secured to the upper surface of the base l2 in the entrance 50, this aligning bar being disposed at right angles to the crimping members 24, so that when the article which is to be wrapped is placed in the entrance 50, it may abut the bar 52 and thereby assure that it is properly placed so as to follow a straight course while it is rolled through the passage 43. In this manner, uniform crimping action of the wrapper at both ends of the article is facilitated.

Finally, it is to be noted that a transversely extending stop bar 54 may be secured to the base 12 at the relatively low end 28, so as to prevent the wrapped articles from rolling off the base.

It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly apparent from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.

While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

In an apparatus for crimping end portions of wrappers on cylindrical articles, the combination of an inclined base plate, a pair of transversely spaced parallel wrapper engaging units positioned on said base plate in the direction of its inclination, and means adjustably attaching said wrapper engaging units to the base plate whereby the units may be moved toward and away from each other, each of said units comprising juxtaposed inner and outer upstanding straps provided with V-shaped notches and affording inverted V-shaped teeth having rounded upper extremities, the teeth on the outer strap being similar to but projecting above the teeth on the inner strap and being offset longitudinally therefrom so that they partly cover the notches between the teeth on the inner strap.
