D v MGCONNOHIE PUMP AND PISTON THEREFOR Filed on. 11, 1948 Feb. 3, 1953 Patented Feb. 3, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PUMP AND PISTON THEREFOR Duane V. McConnohie, Galesburg, Mich.
Application October 11, 1948, Serial No. 53,955
9 Claims. .1
This invention relates to improvements in pump and piston therefor.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a pump well adapted for use in deep wells and one in which the parts are simple and economical to produce and assemble and at the same time one which is highly efficient and not likely to become inoperative in use.
Second, to provide a piston for well casings or cylinders which can be readily adjusted to use a pair of cupped packing members or pairs of cupped packing members the packing members of the pairs being arranged in oppositely facing relation.
Third, to provide a pump structure having these advantages which the cupped packing .membars are so supported that they cannot become reversed within the cylinder or casing even after becoming substantially worn.
Objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is pointed out in the claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary side elevational view partially in longitudinal structure of a preferred embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 2 is an exploded view with the parts disposed in their relative order.
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the piston of my invention as adjusted for an opposed pair of cupped packing members the cylinder or casing being indicated by dotted lines.
In the accompanying drawing I represents a pump casing or cylinder. The foot valve commonly associated therewith is designated by the numeral 2 but details are not illustrated. A section of the pump rod or piston rod is shown at 3. The cylinder is provided with a packing head, designated generally by the numeral 4, and through which the pump rod reciprocates. The packing head 4 is adapted to receive a packing element that seals the upper end of the pump assembly to the inside of the well casing as is common practice. As the foot valve and this packing head form no part of my present invention they are not detailed. The cylinder or casin I is desirably of brass. The packing head 4 is provided with a check valve and slot-like horizontal openings that admit liquid to the top of the cylinder as is common in valves of this type.
The piston of my invention comprises the tubular intermediate body member 5 externally threaded at its upper end to receive the internally threaded upper head body member .6. This head body member is provided with a discharge port I opening to the tubular pump rod 3 the head member having an internally threaded collar-like portion 33 into which the piston rod is fed. The inner end of the head body member is provided with an annular abutment 9 projecting radially outward relative to the intermediate body memher. The head member has an inwardly faced conical valve seat to and is provided with a plurality oi angularly spaced ports H opening to this valve seat and to the casing above the abutment '9.
The bottom body member I2 is threaded into the lower end of the intermediate body member and is provided with an annular flange-like abutment IS. The bottom body member has an inlet port M surrounded by the inwardly facing conical valve seat I5.
I provide a plurality of cupped packings or leathers, as they are commonly called, these being designated in the accompanying drawing by the numerals I6 and IT for convenience in description although they are duplicates. The packing members l l are arranged to face outwardly with their base flanges It in supported engagement with the abutments 9 of the head body member and with the abutment it of the bottom body member.
Packing supporting rings is are arranged on the inner sides of the base flanges of these outer packing members and the base flanges 18 of the inner packing members It are disposed in sup' ported relation to these rings.
The clamping and spacing sleeve 201 is arranged in concentric spaced relation to the intermediate body member with its ends in supporting clamping engagement with the base flanges of the inner packing members as is shown in Fig. 1. The body members are adjustably associated in the embodiment illustrated through their threads so that the spacing and clamping members and the supporting rings are securely clamped in their assembled relation. The intermediate body member has one or more side openings 2| opening between the inwardly facing or inner packing members while the sleeve 20: has a side opening 22. This subjects the inwardly facing packing members to the pressure within the plunger or piston.
The inlet valve '23 is desirably formed of rubber of suitable hardness and is shouldered to provide a neck '23! receiving the lower end of the coil spring 2 2. The upper end of this coil spring engages the neck 25 on the valve 25 also of rubber. This valve "26 has a central port 2? therethrough opening to the discharge port of the head member. The valve 26 coacts with the valve seat I0 closing the ports I on the down stroke of the piston and opening the same on the up stroke to permit the water in the cylinder above the pi..- ton to flow into the piston and to be discharged on the up or discharge stroke. The inlet valve 23 is opened on the down stroke but is closed on the up stroke. With this arrangement of valves the single spring 24 serves to yieldingly urge or bias them to their seats. lhe inlet valves 23 and 26 and the piston thus coact with the upper and lower check valves in the packing head and foot valve respectively to form a familiar type of double acting pump.
One of the advantages of my present invention is that the piston may be assembled with two pairs of packing members, as shown in Fig. l, or with a pair of packing members as shown in Fig. 3. When adapted for a single pair of inwardly facing packing members, as shown in Fig. 3, the outwardly facing packings H are omitted or removed allowing the rings H! to seat upon the abutments of the head and bottom members.
The relationship of the packing members It to the rings is the same as in Fig. 1 as is also the spacing and clamping sleeve 26!. The abutment rings l8 are of such radial dimensions that their outer edges are adjacent to but spaced from the casing or cylinder wall as is shown. It will be noted that they are in overlapping relation or in supporting relation to the merging zones of the base flanges of the packing flanges with their skirt portions thereby eifectively supporting the packings largely relieving the same of flexing stress at this zone thereby prolonging the life of the packings and also preventing reversal of the packings within the casing even after they become very flexible from wear or the like. At the same time the skirts of the packings are entirely free to conform to the wall of the cylinder.
I have illustrated and described my invention in a highly practical commercial embodiment thereof. The structure is highly eificient and at the same time the parts may be quite economically produced, the intermediate body member and the sleeve being formed of tubular stock and the end body members being screw machine parts. The parts may .be easily and quickly assembled. Should occasion require the parts may be disassembled for renewal or replacement of the packing members.
I have not attempted to illustrate various adaptations and embodiments of my invention as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled'in the art to embody or adapt my invention as may be desired.
