This invention relates to brassieres and more particularly, to dcollett brassieres, and its object is to so modify the former relation of the breast-receiving pockets and lower carrying band, together with the use of two upwardly projecting stay members and coacting elastic inserts for the band as to enable the use of a narrow band and at the same time secure excellent supporting action, the latter being aided by the fact that the carrying band at the base of the pockets is formed of two sections which are divergent in reversely directed angles, the seam line at the base of the two pockets being peaked.

The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 1 is a view in elevation taken from the exterior of the brassiere, those elastic band areas which extend to the rear and are normally connected by hooks or the like when the garment is worn, being broken away.

Fig. 2 is a view in elevation, similar to that of Fig. 1, showing the inner or reverse face of the brassire.

Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that each fabric member I is outwardly extended beyond the normal pocket area, that area being outwardly bounded by upwardly-extending stays 2, It is preferred that these stays consist of resilient metallic members enclosed in fabric. In each case, the stay will be secured at its top to a tape or reinforcement 3 and at its bottom the stay may be secured to a tape or reinforcement 4 or directly to the appropriate lowermost band section 5. Each fabric area I is seamed to an overlying fabric frame 6 which is of inverted V-shaped configuration, these frames being seamed together for a short distance above the connected lower band sections 5, as indicated at BX.

Immediately below each upright stay 2 is an elastic insert 1 for the lower band and that band carries at its outer ends straps 8. These straps, as customary, will be of a length to meet at the back of the wearer and be provided with connecting means, such as hooks and eyes or suitable elements. Each pocket is provided with a dart at 9 and with the usual front gore at E0, so as to cause the pocket to conform closely to the wearer when the garment is in use, and shoulder straps at H, these straps being broken away in the drawings, will be provided as customary. It will be understood that by the provision of an overlying frame for the pockets, of the character described, the fabric pieces which include the pocket areas, the latter being lat- 2 terly bounded by the stays 2, may be of light fabric adapted to stretch on the bias whereas the frame members 6 are made preferably of substantially non-stretchable fabric.

Upon lifting either shoulder strap, the stress is transmitted primarily at an angle directed to- Ward the inner base area at which the frame members are mutually secured together, thence to the lower band area inwardly of the elastic insert 1 below the second or coacting pocket, the bias-cut fabric yielding to permit such action. There is thus a reaction which tends to simultaneously rock each pocket assembly in an upward direction at the point at which the two frame members are seamed together, molding and rounding the breasts with a desired separation, and this with comfort and adequate support. At the same time, a desired proportion of the lifting stress is thrown, by the sharp angle of the downwardly-extending leg of each overlying frame member, to the substantially inelastic section of the lower band 5 outwardly of the elastic insert 1, which insures that the resilient stays 2 will be brought into close contact with the wearer outward of the breasts with a desired restraining action.

Having described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:

1. A dcollett brassire consisting of two pocket members of fabric, each pocket member being cupped to provide outer and inner sections, the outer section of each pocket member being bounded by an upwardly-directed stay and the fabric continuing outwardly of said stay in triangular formation, an overlying frame for and secured to each pocket member, said overlying frame having substantially vertical inner legs and consisting of a band of fabric of inverted V-shape, the inner legs of said frames being connected near their base, a relatively narrow lower band secured to the lower margins of the pocket fabric and to the overlying frame, elastic inserts for said lower band being provided below each of said stays, said stays are directed outwardly stitchingly uniting said elastic insert to said pocket members and said frame members to effect a co-action between said elements, and a shoulder strap for each overlying frame member, the brassire being provided with means for connecting the lower band ends at the back of a wearer.

2. A dcollett brassire consisting of two pocket members of fabric, each pocket member being cupped to provide outer and inner sections,

' the outer section of each pocket member being 3 bounded by an upwardly-directed stay and the fabric continuing outwardly of said stay in triangular formation, an overlying frame for and secured to each pocket member, said overlying frame having substantially vertical inner legs and consisting of a band of fabric of inverted V-shape, the inner legs of said frames being connected near their base, a relatively narrow lower band having two sections, each section secured to the lower margin of a pocket fabric and an inner leg of an appropriate inverted V frame, the band sections crossing each other immediately below the connected inner legs of the overlying frames to form an overlapped fabric reinforcement, said band sections being directed downwardly and angularly with respect to said reinforcement, an elastic insert for and continuing each lower band section, one elastic insert being disposed below each of said stays, said stays are directed outwardly stitchingly uniting REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
