for attachment to a persons body and two um- I brella staff clamping means for holding any ordinary umbrella, parasol or the like either in an upright open condition or a suspended closed condition.

Another object of this invention is to provide means in combination with the other elements and adjustably on the upright body member to engage an umbrella handle having a crook to prevent rotation of the umbrella when supported in an open condition.

A further object of the present invention is to produce a holding element, a portion of which is preferably a part of the body upright, including a channelled plate and a hinged closure having a slot to receive the spring catch on the staff of the umbrella to prevent the umbrella from turning and descending relative to said holding member while said umbrella is supported in an open condition.

A still further object of this invention is to produce a unique hanger member in which the upper end of the umbrella staff may be clamped while said umbrella is in a closedcondition.

With the above and other objects in view this invention consists of the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then designated by the claims.

In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing, wherein- I Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the umbrella bandoleer with a piece of the body upright broken out and the holding member shown in an open position.

In carrying out the invention as herein embodied l0 represents the body upright including a leg H which is long enough to extend from the region of a persons chest to the locality of the body upright or, in particular, at the upper end of the leg I I is a right angle outwardly projecting extension 12 providing a shoulder IS on the underneath side of said extension for a purpose to be later described.

Connected with the outer edge of the extension l2 and projecting upwardly therefrom is a hold ing member plate [4 having a vertical semicylindrical channel I5 formed therein, the inner surface of which is roughened, as by forming punch projections l6 from the material of the plate l4. From the upper end of the holding member plate I4 projects a top plate H and from the rear of said top plate projects an angular back plate l8 having its lower end fixed to the rear face of the leg II. From the foregoing it will be apparent that the holding member plate [4 is in a parallel offset plane relative to the leg H and the back plate l8 has an angular shape to lie against the generally sloping shape of a persons chest.

At the extreme lower end of the'leg H is an outwardly projectingv right angle stop toe 19 to prevent parts loosely connected with the leg from becoming accidentally disengagedand above said stop toe there is a longitudinal slot 20 formed in said leg. The foregoing elements may be proback plate l8 may be welded, brazed or soldered to the rear face of the leg H.

A closure 2| is suitably hinged at 22 to one side of the holding member plate 14 so that said closure may lie flat against said plate l4 in the closed position, Fig. 3, or swung outward to an open position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. When in the closed position said closure is temporarily fastened by a pivoted latch 23 attached to the free side of said closure by the pivot 24 and adapted to engage a keeper 25 on the side of the holding member plate I4 opposite the hinge. The closure 2|, preferably, is provided with a vertical semi-cylindrical channel 26 that aligns with the channel I5 in the holding member plate l4 when the closure is in the closed position to substantially surround and clamp the staff 21, Figs. 2 and 7, of an umbrella or the like between said closure and the plate l4.

This closure 2| has a vertically elongated. aperture or slot 28 preferably located in the walls of the channel 26 to receive the spring latch 29, Fig. 7, on the umbrella staff and which retains the umbrella top closed. With the spring latch 29 of the umbrella in the slot 28 said umbrella is held against rotation. The. distal end of said spring latch 29 is usually straight and forms substantially a right angle with. the staif 21 so that said distal end of said spring latch may reset on the bottom end wall of the slot 28 to hold the umbrella in a. predetermined upright position and, under ordinary conditions prevent the umbrella from sliding downward in the holding member. In order to retain the umbrella against an upward movement, as might happen when encountering wind currents, the shoulder I3 is so positioned that it will lieiust above the inner end of the umbrella handle 30 shown in dotted cation of crook or book of an umbrella handle 1 therefore it becomes necessary to provide additional means to: assure a non-rotating movement of the umbrella. To this end. I provide a handle rest 3|. including a tab 32. having a fastening device. 33 thereon and projecting through the leg slot 20 for adjustably connecting said handle rest to the leg H. From the tab 321 projects a right angle step 34 having a riser-or flange 35 along its front edge which, with the adjacent portion of the leg I l, forms a socket to receive the outer end of the umbrella handle 30 which will prevent the umbrella from rotating or slipping downward.

An adjustable breast strap 36, having a suitable buckle for adjustably connecting the ends thereof, is attached intermediate its ends to the body upright l0, preferably to the angular or oblique back plate 18 thereof, by fastening means 31. Desirably, the breast strap passes through th loop formed inthe body upright by the extension 2, holding member plate [4; top end plate I! and the oblique back plate l8.

A shoulder strap 38 has one end secured to the upper end of the body upright ID, as to the oblique back. plate 18 by fastening devices 39 and the other end is attached to a slide 40, Fig. 1, adjustably and slidably connected to the breast strap 36' some suitable distance from the permanent location of the body upright ill on said strap 36. Assuming that the body upright I0 is to rest against the right hand, side of the users chest thenit is desirable that the shoulder strap connecting slide 40 be located somewhere between the middle of the back and the left side of the user according to his or her size.

A belt 4| has a suitable buckle for adjustably connecting the ends thereof and said belt loosely connected intermediate its ends to the lower portion of the leg I I, either above or below the umbrella handle rest 3 I, by a loop 42 whereby said belt 4| may be adjusted vertically 0n the leg II of the body upright ID.

A hanger member 43 is produced from a single strip of flat metal bent to provide a generally U-shaped body including a front plate 44, inturned legs 45 projecting from said front plate and outturned toes 46 extending from the inner ends of the legs and secured to the outer surface of the belt by fastening devices 41.

The front plate 44 of the hanger member 43 has a vertical channel 48, Figs. 4 and 5, of a depth suflicient to substantially contain the upper or tip end of the umbrella staff which is outside of the top or cover and the surface of said channe1 is roughened, as by punch projections 49 within the channel, similar to the channel I 5 in the holding member. A. catch 50 ispivoted at 5|. to one side of the front plate 44 for disposition across the channel 48 and engagement with the keeper 52 to clamp an umbrella, in closed condition, Fig. 4, securely by its tip portion. in the hanger member, whereby said umbrella may hang from the belt of the apparatus when not in use as protection from rain or sunshine.

The straps and belt constitute the harness for the apparatus whereby the whole appliance may be readily affixed to a, persons body. Thereafter any ordinary umbrella, parasol or the like may be mounted on. said apparatus. in either a closed or open condition leaving both hands of the user free to be. employed for other purposes. When the umbrella or other similar item is supported in. an. open condition it will. be directly above the persons head so as to not interfere with his or her headpiece or coiffure. Also, the umbrella or other similar article will follow the movements of the persons body so that when bending slightly forwardly in bucking a wind driven rain the umbrella will form an efficient shield against such rain.

The main. feature of the invention is the provision of an umbrella bandoleer which will accommodate any ordinary umbrella or like article thus permitting the separate storage of both the bandoleer and umbrella when the latter is not likely to be needed. Also a person having an umbrella is not required to purchase a new one or any device as a substitute therefor.

From the above description it will now be obvious that I have produced an exceedingly simple and relatively inexpensive apparatus that may be wrapped into a small parcel for storage and carrying purposes and easily and quickly unwrapped and assembled on a persons body to receive an umbrella and support the latter either in an open or closed condition.

Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction herein shown and described as these may be varied within the scope of the appended claims without, departing from the spirit of the invention.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and useful is:

1. An umbrella bandoleer comprising a body upright including a flat leg of' suflicient length to extend from the region of the persons chest to the locality of the waist line, an extension projecting outwardly at right angles to and from the upper end of said. leg, a holding-member plate projecting upwardly from the forward or outer edge of said extension, a top end plate projecting rearwardly from the holding member plate to a location in the rear of the plane of the leg and plate is fixedly secured, said holding member plate having a vertical channel open at the front end to end and the inner surfaces of the walls of said channel having roughening formations, said channel adapted to receive the staff of an umbrella or the like laterally inserted therein, means movably attached to the holding member plate for disposition across the channel to clamp the umbrella staff therein when the umbrella is in an open condition and the inner end of the umbrella handle underlies the shoulder formed by the extension, a keeper to temporarily hold the clamping means in a closed position, and a harness to support the body upright on a persons body, said harness including a breast strap fastened to the lower portion of the oblique back plate and adapted to encircle the upper part of a persons body, a shoulder strap having one end secured to the upper portion of said oblique back plate and adapted to overlie a persons shoulder, means to adjustably connect the other end of said shoulder strap to the rear portion of the breast strap and a belt vertically adjustably connected to the lower portion of the leg and adapted to encircle a persons waist for steadying the body upright. I

2. The umbrella bandoleer according to claim 1 in combination with a stop at the lower end of the leg to retain the belt on said leg.

3. The umbrella bandoleer according to claim 1, in combination with an umbrella handle rest vertically adjustably mounted, on the lower por- 6 tion of the leg and including a step projecting outwardly from the front of said leg and a flange along the front edge of said step, said step, flange and leg forming a socket to receive the outer end of an umbrella handle when the staff of the umbrella is clamped in the channel of the holding member plate.

4. The umbrella bandoleer according to claim 1 wherein the means for clamping an umbrella staff in the channel of the holding member plate comprises a closure hinged to said holding member plate at one side thereof for disposition in a closed position across the front of said plate, said closure having a vertical channel to assume a position directly opposite the channel in the holding member plate when said closure is disposed in front of said plate, and a latch pivoted to said closure for engagement with the keeper to temporarily retain the closure in the closed position.

5. The structure according to claim l wherein the closure has a vertically disposed elongated slot in a wall of the channel thereof to receive the spring latch on the umbrella staff.
