Application April 22, 1948, Serial No. 22,548
' 2'Claims. (o1. 311, 1a5) The invention relates to improvements in writing desks and is to be supported in a suitable table or stand, with provisions also being made to retain writing auxiliary means within reach of the user.
A primary object of the invention is to provide a combined writing desk and table which does not have the appearance of a desk when not in use, and is capable of retaining various objects on the surface thereof, or be actually used as a dining table of desired, and can be changed into a writing desk when necessary, without the necessity for removing any objects from the table top in order to do so.
Another object of the invention is to provide a writing surface in close proximity to the writer so that he may conveniently make such use thereof.
And another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the combination table and desk is supported against accidentally overturning while at the same time not interfering wit th intended function thereof.
And more specifically, it is the object of the invention to provide means whereby the writing desk may be pivoted into position either to the left or to the right of the table when in extended position, in the provision of a suitable drawer for retaining writing paper, ink and the like accessories, and a, removable brace retained by the table and providing additional support for the device.
With these and numerous other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the combinatlon desk and stand of the invention;
Figure 2 is a transvers sectional view of the invention and is taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a horizontal longitudinal view of the invention and is taken substantially on th line 3-3 of Figure 2, and;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the desk mem her and the means for enabling it to be put into operation.
Referring to the figures, the device of the invention is indicated generally by the numeral l and consists of a table [2, a writing desk I4, and a brace l6.
Table I2 consists of a two-part table top I8 and 20. respectively which are spaced from each other by means of a relatively narrow transversely positioned stop 22, for a purpose soon to be described. Table top members l8 and 20 are arouately curved at one end thereof at 24 and it is to be understood that this is merely a matter of design and may be varied to suit the taste of the owner. Table supports or legs 26 are provided and are secured to table l2. Legs 28 are suitably notched or dove-tailed intermediate the length thereof at 28 to seat therein a shelf 30. A drawer 32. is slidably positioned on rails or runners134:
extending integrally from walls 36 mortised into legs 26 at a point adjacent their upper extremity. Walls 36 form the function of guide for drawer 32. A suitable actuating knob 38 is retained on the arcuate front surface 40 of drawer 32 for actuation of the drawer. A pair of studs 42 depend belowshelf 30 in spaced relation and are transversely bored at 44 to receive therein a U-shaped offset brace 16. The lateral arms 46 of brace l6 extend through bores 44, while the transverse connecting legs 48 rest on the floor to provide additional support for the device [0. Studs 42 are suitably counterbored at right angles to bores 44 and retain therein set screws 50 and engage arms 46 of brace l6 for retention in fixed position. Locking nut 52 assures against accidental displacement of screws 50.
As is clearly illustrated in Figure 4, the writing desk l4 consists of a flat leaf or board and is of such length as to terminate in an arcuate front portion 54, and 54 being flush with the rest of the table and extends rearwardly until in abutting relation with stop 22. Writing leaf [4 contains a depending U-shaped bail or wire 56 and is received in a T-shaped slot 58 in lower table top section 20. Leg 60 of slot 58 extends substantially the entire length of the table and terminates in lateral member 62. Thus, when leaf I4 is pulled outwardly by means of knob 64, it will rid along groove by means of wire 56 until it reaches transverse notch 62, at which time desk top l4 may be pivoted either to the left or to the right, as is shown in Figure l and is then used as a writing top. It is to be noted that upper table top member I8 serves as a brace for desk [4 against the downward pressure of the arms of the writer. Suitable guides 66 are supplied on either side of leaf M.
In use, table l2 may be placed in a desired location in the house, and will have flowers, or other objects placed on the top is. In the event that it is so desired, table l2 may be used for serving purposes without the necessity for rearranging the entire construction. When the combination device is to be used as a writing table, leaf I4 is pulled forward by means of knob 64 until it has reached its extended position, and is then pivoted laterally to wherever the writer is seated. Brace I6 is removable and can be placed in either side of table II]. The chair of the writer seats between the arms of brace l6, and thus there is no interference. Drawer 32 may be used to retain writing accessories, as desired, and shelf 30 may be used as a book rack or any other desired function. The combination desk and stand may be constructed orany' suitable material, such as metal or ,wood and is of any desired shape or size. i
From the above, it will be seen that the several objects of the invention are attained. As lmany modifications of the embodiment illustrated might be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention, and the above description and accompanying ,drawings shall "be considered illustrative andnot in alimiting sense. Having described the invention, what is claimedfas new is:
11'; 'A' combination desk and table comprising spaced ,elongate'd'upper and lower planks, the upper one constituting a table top, a transverse stop separating said planks at one end thereof, supports for said planks, a .1 slot in said lower p1ank, said slot including a longer leg extending longitudinally of said lower plank and ashorter leg extending transversely thereof adjacent the opposite end, a writing desk disposed between said planks and, a U-shaped bail depending from said desk and slidably received in said longer leg of said T slot, the legs and web portion of said bail lying in a plane coextensive with the plane of the longitudinal axis of the longer leg to prevent jamming, whereby said desk may be slid to said opposite end of said ,table and turned to extend transversely of the planks for use as a desk.
2. The combination of claim 1 and a brace means removably carried by said supports and extending transversely of the table.
