, In France July 12, 1950 1 Claim. (01. 20656) My invention relates to a case for cosmetics and in particular for lipsticks. The main object of my invention consists in preventing the operation of the cosmetic-lifting means as long as the cover of the case has not been removed. I have also sought to prevent the positioning of the cover as long as the cosmetic has not been returned into the bottom of the case.

The following description and accompanying drawings given by Way of example and by no means in a limiting sense, will allow understanding how the invention may be executed, the features appearing in the drawing and in the specification forming part of the invention inasmuch as they are readable in the claim. In said drawings:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a case established in accordance with the invention after removal of the cover, shown near by, the cosmetic being in its raised position.

Fig. 2 is an axial cross-section through line II-II of Fig. 3.

Fig. 3 is a transverse cross-section through line IIIIII of Fig. 2.

In the example disclosed, the case is provided with a base I the size and shape of which are selected in accordance with the outer appearance it is desired to give the case, and inside said hollow base I is secured a central tube 2 the outer diameter of which is less than the inner diameter of the recess in the base so as to leave a gap therebetween; in the example illustrated, the securing of the tube 2 is ensured by a collar 3 on said tube 2, which collar is embedded in the base I.

The tube 2 serves as a guide for a cosmetic carrier assuming, as shown by way of example, the shape of a cup 4 provided, if required, with. an inner projecting member adapted to take hold of the cosmetic stick 5; such a member that may also serve for further purposes as disclosed hereinafter, is illustrated under the form of a transverse pin 6 passing through the cup 4.

Between the tube 2 and the inner wall of the base I is fitted a sleeve 1 extending up to a level underneath that of the upper end of the tube, said sleeve being revolubly carried inside the base I.

Said sleeve carries at its periphery or is in one with a control member 8 that may, as shown, assume the shape of a collar projecting outwardly beyond the upper end of the case.

Between the tube 2 that is rigid with the base and the sleeve 1 that may revolve with reference to said tube, is inserted an arrangement for transforming this relative movement of rotation into a sliding movement controlling the upward and downward movement of the cosmetic carrier 4. v

In the example disclosed, there are provided for this purpose a helical slope 9 on the inner surface of the sleeve 1 and a slot that does not register with the helical slope 9 and is preferably rectilinear or substantially rectilinear and that is provided in the tube 2 for guiding a stud l0 rigid with the cosmetic carrier 4. Said stud i that engages the slope 9 beyond said slot may in a simple embodiment form a mere outer eX- tension of the pin 6. It has also been supposed in the embodiment illustrated that the helical slope 9 was constituted by a helical slot provided in an auxilary sleeve H fitted inside the sleeve 1.

The case thus constituted is complete with a cap 12 covering the sleeve 1 and engaging the operating member 8 rigid therewith.

According to a main feature of the invention, the three parts constituted by (a) The cap I2 (b) The stationary system comprising the base I and the tube 2 (c) The movable system comprising the sleeve 1 and the control member 8 carry interengaging parts in a manner such that, in one or more predetermined relative positions, the cap may play the part of a bolt preventing the relative rotation between the two stationary and movable systems b and 0. Thus in particular the rising movement of the cosmetic stick is prevented when the cap is in position and there is, therefore, no risk of crushing said stick against the bottom of the cap. Furthermore, when the cap is to be positioned after the cosmetic has been used, it is necessary for the interengaging parts to register in order to allow this repositioning, and consequently it is possible to prevent the complete closing of the case through the cap except for a predetermined relative position of the systems b and c, for which the cup 4 is at the lowermost end of its travel.

The drawing illustrates a preferred manner of providing for such an interengagement: the interengaging parts are in this case carried by the sleeve I, by the end of the tube 2 projecting beyond same and inside the cap. To this end, the outer wall of the sleeve 1, said end of the tube 2 and the inner wall of the cap l2 have noncircular sections corresponding with one another; as illustrated, the cap [2 is provided, for instance, with grooves I3 adapted to be engaged by the projecting ribs I4 and I5 at the periphery of the sleeve 1 and of the end of the tube 2 respectively. In the example illustrated, it has been supposed that the projecting ribs I5 are provided on a collar I6 carried by the upper end of the tube 2 and capping with some clearance the upper end of the sleeve I I.

It is of advantage, as readily apparent from the drawing, to give a considerable height to the part of the sleeve 1 projecting above the base I in order to prevent any relative rotation between the systems b and c as long as the cap I2 has not been shifted by a considerable length.

Of course, the above described embodiment has been disclosed only by way of exemplification and it is possible to modify it in various manners without unduly widening the scope of the invention as defined in accompanying claim.

What I claim is:

A cosmetic holder which comprises a base having a bore therein extending downwardly from the top thereof; an inner sleeve having its bottom end fast with said base at the bottom of said bore, and extending upwardly through said bore with its upper part projecting out of said base, said inner sleeve being of less outer diameter than said bore to leave an annular space between said sleeve and said base; an outer tubular unit around said inner sleeve, adapted to rotate freely about the same, having its lower portion in said annular space rotatably borne in said bore, while the upper part of said tubular unit projects out of said base; a collar secured to the top of said inner sleeve and projecting peripherally from the outer surface thereof to provide a stop against upward movement of said outer tubular unit; a lipstick carrier within said inner sleeve; means for advancing and retracting said lipstick carrier coincident with the relative rotation of said outer tubular unit and said inner sleeve; a removable cap adapted to be fitted over said collar and the upper part of said outer tubular unit; a peripheral flange secured to the outer surface of said tubular unit immediately adjacent the upper end of said base, said flange laterally projecting beyond said base so as to provide both a manipulation member and an abutment for said cap; said tubular unit and said collar having corresponding longitudinal ribs on their outer peripheral surfaces, adapted to register for predetermined relative positions of said unit and inner sleeve, While said cap is formed with inner longitudinal grooves corresponding to said ribs, so as to accommodate sa d ribs when the same are registering, said means and said ribs being so relatively positioned that said ribs register when said lipstick carrier is in its fully retracted position and said ribs are out of register when said lipstick carrier is advanced to project the lipstick from the holder.
