This invention relates to improvements in cutters, and more particularly pertains to improvements in plug cutters whereby a range of diameters of plugs can be machined quickly and facilely.
Conventional methods of cutting Wood plugs have included the use of a solid head wherein a bit is inserted, and the use of a sleeve saw. However, such devices are of limited application and eficiency: Adjustment within a range of sizes of plugs cannot be obtained readily, it being necessary to employ a different cutting tool for each size of plug to becut. Cutting blades of such devices tend to wear rapidly and to break frequently in use. In addition, plugs cut by such means are inferior, being usually oval rather than true-round in shape.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a plug cutter of simple-and durable construction adapted to cut a range of sizes of trueround plugs.
Another object is to provide a plug cutter that can be pre-set accurately and facilely to cut a predetermined size plug.
Still another object is to provide a plug cutter having eccentric elements and Stellite cutting edges whereby a range of sizes of plugs can be cut on drill press, lathe, plug manufacturing, and similar machines.
Further objects andr advantages of this invention, as well as its construction, arrangement and operation, will be apparent from the following description and claims in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a plan View of a plug cutter, showing a preferred embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 2 is an elevation thereof; and
Fig. 3 is a section thereof taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Spindle Il is provided with a threaded bore I3 extending into one end thereof, whereby said spindle is secured on the rotatable shaft of a machine (not shown), and a bore I5 eccentric to the common longitudinal axis of said spindle and said threaded bore extending into the opposite end thereof and communicating with said threaded bore. A plurality of setscrews I1 are threaded in spaced relation into said spindle, said setscrews being adapted to secure a bushing. hereinafter described, seated in said eccentric bore.
Bushing I9 is a split ring adapted to be carried snugly in said eccentric bore. said bushing being provided with a flanged end 2l adapted to abut a face of said spindle, and with an eccentric bore 23 cut therethrough.. Preferably, said bore 23 is of such eccentricity that rotation of said bushing from the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3 makes theV longitudinal axis of said bore 23 coincident with the longitudinalv axis of threaded bore I3.
Cutter head 25 comprises a shank 21 adapted to be carried in bore 23 of bushing I9 and an integral bladeV portion, hereinafter described. Said shank includes an axial bore 2-9 to facilitate centering and alignment of the tool, a flange portion 3| adapted to abut bushing I9, and a plurality of longitudinal slots 33 aligned with the cutting blades hereinafter described and adapted to carry the auxiliary cutter hereinafter described. The integral blade portion comprises a cylindrical sleeve 35 carrying diametrically opposed blades 31 and 39, which are oppositely disposed, as shown. Each of said blades is sawtooth` shaped, and is provided with a Stellite welded and ground cuttingl edge. Said blades are designed with suitable cutting-edge angle, relief, back rake and side rake, for the -uses intended. Chip ports 4I are provided in the wall of the cutter head to facilitate plug removal and to prevent binding the cutter.
Auxiliary cutter 43 is carried in slot33 of cutter head 25, and is provided with a, Stellite welded and ground cutting edge 45. Said cutting edge 45 is designed with a suitable cutting-edge angle, relief, back rake and side rake so asto be adapted for use in chamfering and tapering the plug being cut. Bolt 41, carried slidably in .slot'49 of cutter 43, is threaded into shank 21 to secure said auxiliary cutter in selected position.
In operation, when it is desired to cut a plug of minimum diameter, the component elements are assembled in the manner shown and mounted on a suitable machine. By reason of the eccentricity of the cutters, cutter 39 is effective to cut clearance, while cutter 31 finishes and auxiliary cutter 43 chamfers and tapers the plug. To cut a plug of maximum diameter, the bushing I9 is rotated 180 from the position illustrated until the axes of cutters 31 and 39 and of spindle II are coincident, and secured in that position by means of setscrews I1. Intermediate sizes can be cut by securing said blis'hing in an intermediate position.

A plug cutter comprising a spindle adapted to be secured on a rotatable shaft, a first eccentric bore in said spindle, a bushing mounted rotatably in said first bore, said bushing having a second eccentric bore. means to retain said bushing against rotation, and a cylindrical sleeve cutter secured in said second bore, the axis of said cutter having a maximum displacement from the axis of said spindle that is less than the/radius of said cutter.

A plug cutterv comprising a spindle adapted to be secured on a rotatable shaft, a rst eccentric bore in said spindle, a bushing mounted rotatably in said first bore, means to secure said bushing against such rotation, a second eccentricV bore in said bushing, and a cylindrical sleeve cutter secured in said second borefthe axis of said cutter' having a maximum displacement from the axis of said spindle that is less than the radius of said cutter.
