LUTHER A. CLARK, OF STRAFFORD, VERMONT.
SNAP-HooK.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 259,668, dated June 20, 1882.
Application tiled May 1, ISEE. (Model.)
To ail whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUTHER ADELBERT CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stratford, in the county of Orange and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Snap-Hooks for Driving-Reins and other Purposes, of which the following is a specication.
Hy improvement relates to that class of snap-hooks which are used upon the ends ot' driving-reins for facilitating attachment and detachment to the bridle-bit, and is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, of which-h Figure l is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, showing the interior construction.
The hook proper, a, Fig. 2, is made of steel or other suitable metal, either cast, malleable, rolled, or Wrought, so that it has the requisite rigidity, to which af metallic tongue, b, ofspring quality is riveted, as shown at c. The whole is then covered with leather in any suitable manner, usually by stitching in the Way well known to harness-makers, asillustratedin Fig. I. The leather covering I make continuous with the bridle-rein or separate, as may be desired.
It is obvious that I thus secure by this inode ot' construction a snap-hook in which the usual attaching-loop is unnecessary and is dis- 3o pensed with. The improved hook also forms alight, simple, inexpensive, and sightly means of attachment, which has the advantage that no metallic parts are in sight to contrast unfavorably with the leather portion of the har- 35 ness, to chafe the cheek-pieces of the bridle bit, or cause inconvenience. either to animal or driver in frosty weather.
Iam aware that it is not new, per se, to cover valious metallc portions of a harness 4o with leathersuch as martingale rings. buckles, and even portions ot' snapl1ooks of various stylesaud I do not claim any such broad improvement in the art.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Let- 45 ters Patent, is-
The snap-hook for driving-reins, consisting ofthe metallic hook and its attached spring, as described, covered with leather throughout and over the whole extent, substantially as 5o and for the purpose set forth.
LUTHER ADELBER'I CLARK.
