This invention relates to a new and improved tool and more particularly and specifically to a new and useful metal knurling tool.
The primary object of this invention resides in the, provision of a knurling tool which may be easily and securely clamped directly in a tool holder in the place of the tool bit thus eliminating the need for disturbing the tool post as is necessary with regular lathe knurling tools which are adapted conventionally to be secured in the tool post in place of the tool holder.
Another object of this invention is the provision of such an arrangement and device as "set forth which allows for the knurling tool to be used in either a left or right hand tool `holder thereby allowing the knurling to bedone close up to the chuck or to the tailstock which isV an operation usually impossible with the use of a straight knurling too1 of the type now in use.
Still another object of this invention is the provision of a knurling tool ofthe character described in which a pair of co-acting knurling dies are removably and rotatably carried at one end of said tool, and said carrying means is pivotally carried through a restricted pivotation by the shank of the tool.
Still another object of this invention is the provision of a tool of the character set forth herein which is of extremely simple and inexpensive design, and which is durable and long lasting in use being readily disassembled for cleaning and maintenance thereof.
Still further improvements and advantages of this invention will readily appear to those skilled vin the art when the followingldescription is read in the light of the accompanying drawings in which:

Referring now to the accompanying drawings which illustrate the preferred embodiment of this invention and in which like numerals indicate similar parts throughout A designates an elongated square shank of a desired metal being of a predetermined cross section adapting it to be rmly secured within the tool holder of a lathe assembly in place of the tool bit. A rectangular head I is formed at one end of the shank A and is provided with a curved outer end 2 on the extended side thereof away from its joint with the shank. The head I is providedadjacent the shank and in a direct alignment with the longitudinal axis thereof, with a horizontally disposed curved slot 3 penetrating said head. A circular drilled aperture 4 is provided through said head adjacent the curved end thereof in direct alignment with theshank of the center of the curved slot s.
A pair of identica1 triangular plates 5 and 6 are secured on either side of the head I in apex depending positions bymeans of a pin I extending through each of said plates and through said curved slot 3 and a second pin 8 extending through said plates and through said drilled aperture 4 in said head I. This arrangement provides for the co-acting pivotation of the plates 5 and 6 about the point 8 within the restricted area provided by the movement of the pin 'I within the slot 3. The upper base side of each of the plates 5 and 6 is provided with a spaced indentation 9 toward the apex thereof forming a pair of rounded angular corners I0 at each of the pair of upper corners of each of said plates. The upper corners of each of the plates 5 and 6 are provided with apertures II extending therethrough in corresponding positions adapting each of them to receive one of the pair of co-acting die Wheels I3 thereon in a position between the upper ends of each of the plates 5 and 6. Each of the pins I2 is provided with an enlarged head I4 thereon adapted to engage the outer surface of one of said plates and an indented channel I5 about the second end thereof which is adapted to receive the locking collars and is extended through the second plate in a manner now to be described.
A pair of toggle links or locking collars generally designated I6 and I'I is provided. The collar or link I6 will be referred to as the rst link lfor the purpose of clarity, and comprises an elongated plate I3 having an embracing means or jaw I9 at one end thereof formedwith an open slot or channel 20 extending for a spaced distance longitudinally thereinto from said one end. The second link or collar I1 also includes an elongated plate at one end and a longitudinally slotted jaw on its second end. The second end of the link I5 is provided with a drilled aperture 2| and intermediate the ends of the link I'I there is a similar aperture registering with the aperture 2i. The registeringapertures are adapted to receive a pivot pin 22 pivotally connecting said collars or links together to form a toggle when they are positioned in end to end overlapping positions. When said collars are interconnnected in the manner described the open ended slots thereof are adapted to be slidably inserted in the reduced portions or circumferentially extending grooves l5 of the respective pins I2 from the inner sides thereof, thereby locking the pins against removal and thus locking the coasting die heads in rotatable positions relative to each other. The collar I6 is provided with a raised projection or protuberance 23 intermediate its ends, between the aperture 2| and channel 20. This projection adapted to correspond with a detent 2d of the collar I1, located at the smaller end of said collar l1, thus providing an interengaging means between said collars to maintain them in theirl proper horizontal positions in end to end alignment at the outer end of the plate 6. IThese collars are of a tempered steel or the like adapting one of said collars to be flexed suniciently so that both of said collars are adapted to interlock with each of the pins l2 when in an overlapping position thus forming an additional spring locking force holding said projection and said detent in locking engagement.
Thus it may be seen that a knurling tool has been provided which is adapted to be fitted in either a right or left handed tool holder for unlimited use on stock carried in a lathe and a holder which is suiciently flexible and pivotable to allow its adaptation to any desired surface for the knurling or ornamentation thereof. It may also be seen that a knurling tool has been provided with a quickly and easily removable means for interchanging the knurling dies thereon for the variation of the designs thereof and for the facilitation of the cleaning, maintenance, and lubrication thereof.
Having thus described and explained this invention and with full belief that modifications in size, materials and general characteristics would not constitute a departure from the spirit of this invention what I desire to claim in Letters Patent is:
l. For application to a plate having spaced openings and to pins extending through the respective openings and having heads at one end preventing their withdrawal from the openings in one direction, said pins having circumferentially extending grooves at their other ends, a pin lock of the quick release type for preventing withdrawal of the pins from the openings in an opposite direction, comprising: a rst toggle link adapted to be positioned against one face of the plate contiguous to one of the pins and formed with a longitudinal slot at one of its ends adapted to receive said one pin, an aperture at its other end, and detent means intermediate its ends; a second toggle link adapted to be positioned against said face of the plate contiguous to the other pin and formed with a longitudinal slot at one end adapted to receive said other pin, an aperture intermediate its ends registering with the first-named aperture, and detent means at its other end complementary to the detent means of the first link, the walls of the respective slots being adapted to engage in the grooves of the pins; a pivot pin disposed between the slotted ends of the links and extending through the registering apertures to pivotally join the links for movement over said face of the plate, said detent means of the links being arranged to releasably interlock with one another in one position to which the toggle links are moved over the face of the plate, said links when locked in said position coacting with the heads of the pins to prevent withdrawal of the pins from the plate in either direction.
2. For application to a plate having spaced openings and to pins extending through the respective openings and having heads at one end preventing their withdrawal from the openings in one direction, said pins having circumferentially extending grooves at their other ends, a pin lock of the quick release type for preventing withdrawal of the pins from the openings in an opposite direction, comprising: a rst toggle link adapted to be positioned against one face of the plate contiguous to one of the pins and formed with a longitudinal slot opening upon one of its ends adapted to receive said one pin, an aperture at its other end, and a projection intermediate its ends; a second toggle link adapted to be positioned against said face of the plate contiguous to the other pin and formed with a longitudinal slot opening upon one end thereof adapted to receive-said other pin, an aperture intermediate its ends registering with the first-named aperture, and a recess at its other end complementing the projection of the first link, the walls of the respective slots being adapted to engage in the grooves of the pins; and a pivot pin disposed between the slotted ends of the links and extending through the registering apertures to pivotally join the links for movement over said face of the plate, said links when locked in said position coacting with the heads of the pins to prevent withdrawal of the pins from the plates in either direction.
