3 Claims.
This invention relates to plumbing fixtures and more particularly pertains to a single or multiple compartment sink or basin and to the means for uniting the compartment or compartments to a drainboard, and a drain valve and strainer therefor.
Heretofore sinks or basins composed of a single compartment or several compartments for holding different liquids such as soap water, rinse water, or other fluids which are used for washing dishes, clothes or other items, have been either fabricated into single units with one or several compartments, or single units have been fixed to a drainboard orplaced in juxtaposition to one another without suitable integration into a united structure.
In the case of multiple compartment sinks, the method of manufacture is expensive and the reto form a substantially integral multiple compartment sink or basin unit.
Another prime object of the invention is to provide efiective and economical means for uniting a single compartment sink into an integrated unit with the drain board or supporting structure and, when two or more single compartment sinks are employed, to join them into a substantially 2 A further object is to supply a combination drain valve and strainer which is operable to drain 01' seal without tipping or tilting the movable element of the valve and strainer.
A still further object is to provide a drain valve and strainer having simple means for opening or integral multi-compartment unit in sealed relationship to the drainboard on other supporting structure and each other.
Another object of the invention is to provide a sink or basin component which is adaptable to form a multiple compartment sink or basin of as many compartments as desired, using but one standard sink compartment and fittings.
Another object of the invention is to supply means for not only uniting two or more standard sink compartments into a unit, but which will also secure the unit to'a drainb'oard or other medium employed to support the unit.
A further object isto supply means to unite one or more sink compartments together with admin board or sink supporting structure so that the connections therebe'tween are sealed against water leakage. v

These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be more apparent by reference to the following description, the appended claim and the accompanying drawings.

Referring now to the drawings wherein like numerals refer to like and corresponding parts through the several views, the integrated compartment sink 20 comprises individual sinks 2| having the usual basin portions formed therein, face flanges 23 on the sinks 2! having apertures formed therein to receive bolts or other fastening means, an extruded aluminum molding 22 adapted to overlie the face flanges 23 having a longitudinal channel formed therein for receiving bolts or other fastening means, bolts 28 lying in the longitudinal channel of the molding 22 and extending through the apertures of the face flanges 23 securing the molding 22 and the sinks 2| together, and a sealing rib 25 disposed 3 at the adjacent sides 24 of the sinks 2| secured thereto in sealing relationship.
Referring in greater detail to the various elements of the invention, the integrated compartment sink 20 comprises two or more individual sinks 2| positioned in side by side relationship so that their adjacent sides 24 abut each other, face flanges 23 on the individual sinks 2| having apertures formed therein for receiving bolts or other fastening means, a molding 22, a lip or flange 29 on the molding 22 for gripping a drainboard, a horizontal surface on the molding 22 having a groove 33 therein for containing a sealing medium between the flanges 29 and the molding 22, a vertical surface on the molding 22 having a groove 3| formed therein for receiving a sealing medium between the molding 22 and a drainboard, a vertical slot 26 and a connecting horizontal slot 21 forming a T shaped channel in the molding 22, a drainboard 30 lying between the lip 29 on the molding 22 and the face flange 23 on the individual sinks 2|, a bolt 28 with its head disposed in the T channel of the molding 22 and its shank portion extending through the apertures in the face flanges 23, a nut 34 secured on the bolt 28 urging the molding 22 and the face flange 23 towards each other, a drainboard 30 disposed between the rib 29 and the face flange 23, rubber sealing grommets 32 disposed in the grooves 3| and 33 respectively sealing between the molding 22 and the drainboard 30 and between the molding 22, and the face flange 23 respectively, a sealing rib 25 overlying the face flanges 23 of the adjacent sides 24 of the individual sinks 2|, a thick neck portion 38 on the sealing rib 25 disposed between the adjacent sides 24 of the individual sinks 2|, a wide flat portion 31 on the rib 25 overlying the adjacent side 24 at their flanges 23, grooves 36 in the underside of the Wide flat portion 31 adapted to contain sealing material 32 therein for sealing the joint between the sealing rib 25 and the face flanges 23; a T shaped longitudinal channel in the neck portion 38 of the sealing rib 25 bolts 34 having their heads connected to the sealing rib 25 with their heads disposed in a T shaped channel, a yoke or arched clip 35 contacting the underside of the face flanges 23, and a nut 34 threaded on the bolt 28 securing the face flanges 23 of the adjacent sides 24 between the sealing rib 25 and the yokes 35.
Nuts 34 coact with the bolts 28 for securing the molding 22 to the sinks 2| via the face flanges 23 in forming the integrated compartment sink 20. In uniting the sinks 2| at their adjacent sides 24 by the sealing and connecting strip 25, a yoke or arched clip 36 is employed to gain contact with both face flanges 23 of adjacent sides 24 to urge same into supporting and sealing relationship under the pressure exerted by the bolt 28 and nut 35. A sealing medium 32 is disposed in the grooves 35 of the sealing rib 25 to seal the joint between the face flanges 23 and the sealing rib 25.
The sealing rib 25 is composed of a wide flat portion 31 and a thick neck portion 38 with the portion 31 lying on top of the adjacent face flange 23 and the portion 38 lying between the adjacent face flanges 23 with the sealing rib 25 having a vertical slot 26 and a horizontal slot 2'! forming a T for receiving the shank and a head of a bolt 28 respectively, and it is to be noted that the top of the rib 25 is substantially below the top of the molding 22 as seen in Fig. 5.
The drain assembly of the invention, as H1115 4 trated by Figs. 7 and 8, is composed of drain sleeve 4| equipped with flange 42 surrounding the aperture 39 in the bottom of the sink 2| internally thereof and gasket 43 externally thereof held in sealing relationship by nut 44. The sleeve 4| carries a valve seat 45 and an annular shoulder 46 internally thereof with the shoulder 46 being interrupted or having a slot formed therein at two points diametrically opposed. The drain strainer and valve plug combination 50 is composed of a valve plug portion 5| and a strainer portion 52 united solidly together by the center operating pin 53 and the strainer portion 52 is equipped with shoulders 54 for resting on the annular shoulder 46 of the sleeve 4| and these shoulders 54 are diametrically opposed so that they may be dropped off the shoulders 46 into the slots therebetween to position the plug 5| on the valve seat 45 as seen in Fig. 8.
In installing the invention in a kitchen drainboard, a hole or aperture is constructed in the drainboard 30 of a suitable size and configuration to allow full access into the basin portion of the sinks 2| with the face flanges 23 contacting the bottom of the drainboard 30. The molding 22 is first inserted into the aperture in the drainboard 33 with the lip or flange 29 of the molding 22 resting on the top portion of the drainboard 33; the slots 26 and 2? having been loaded with the desired quantity of bolts 28. In the drawings two such bolts are shown in conjunction with each side flange 23. However, any number can be used depending on the size, weight, and use of the installation. An individual sink 2| is then brought up from beneath the drainboard 3B and connected to the molding 22 via the bolts 23 by securing the nuts 34 thereon. Similar sinks 2| are similarly secured to the molding 22 in accordance with the number of compartments desired in the installation. Sealing ribs 25 previously loaded with bolts 28, are then placed above and between the sinks 2| and secured in supporting and sealing relationship to the sinks 2| by the yokes 35 and nuts 34. Suitable sealing material such as rubber grommets, a sealing compound, or mastic cement is placed between the molding 22 and the drainboard 30 and between the molding 22 and the face flanges of the sinks 2: to prevent the leakage of water therebetween. Suitable sealing material is also employed between the sealing rib 25 and the face flanges 23 of the sinks 2 I.
It can now be seen that the individual sinks 2| have been joined together into an integrated compartment sink 20 and secured in sealed and supported relationship to a drainboard 30. Also, at their adjacent sides 24 the sinks are sealed and supported by virtue of the sealing rib 25 and its related parts.
Relative to the drain assembly 40, sleeve 4| is inserted from the top of the aperture 39 so that the flange 42 will surround the top side of the aperture. A gasket 43 and a nut 44 are then secured in place from beneath the sink 2| securing the sleeve 4| to the sink 2| in sealing relationship. The unitary strainer and valve plug 59 is then placed inside a hollow sleeve 4| from the top of the sink 2|, and, depending on its circumferential position, will place the shoulders 54 of the strainer 52 on the shoulders 45 of the sleeve 4| thereby holding the valve plug 5| away from the valve seat 45 so that water can drain therebetween, as illustrated in Fig. 7. The other circumferential position of the unitary strainer and valve plug 55 in relation to the sleeve 4| is illustrated in Fig. 8 and shows the shoulders 54 positioned in the slots interrupting the shoulders 46, which allows the valve plug 5! to sit in sealing relationship on the valve seat 45 of the sleeve 4|, preventing the draining of water from the sink 2 i.
It is apparent that a single sink 2! can be installed or any number of sinks 2| installed for use, as desired, and that a completely sealed and effectively supported integrated compartment sink results from a combination of the elements of the invention and the invention insures a pleasing appearance, a sanitary seal, and enables the ordinary workman to make a high grade installation with facility and dispatch.
It will be noted that the strainer and valve plug 50 is lifted up or dropped down and rotated circumferentially to effect sealing or draining, and, as there is no tipping or tilting in the device, water action, such as the surge of the flow in draining cannot effect the set position.
While a preferred form of the invention has been shown and described, many adaptations, deletions, and changes can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the appended claims which define the scope of the invention.
I .claim:
1. In an integrated plumbing unit, a molding for lining the aperture of a drain-board, a vertical face portion on said molding having a longitudinal groove therein adapted to hold a sealing material for sealing said faceof said molding against the internal peripheral face of the drainboard, a lip on said molding for overlying the drainboard, sinks underlying the aperture in the drainboard, flanges on said sinks underlying the drain-board, means joining said molding to said flanges gripping the drain-board between the lip on said molding and the said flanges, a horizontal face on said molding having a longitudinal groove therein adapted to hold a sealing material for sealing said face of said molding against said flanges, a rib overlying the adjacent flanges of said sinks having longitudinal grooves in the face thereof contacting said flanges adapted to hold a sealing material for sealing the contacting face of said rib with respect to said adjacent flanges, and means clamping said rib to said adjacent flanges.
2. In an integrated plumbing unit, a molding for lining the aperture of a drain-board having a vertical slot and a connecting horizontal slot longitudinally disposed therein forming a T, longitudinal internal shoulders on said molding formed by the said T slot, bolts having their head portions contacting said shoulders, a lip on said molding for overlying a drain-board, sinks underlying the aperture in a drainboard, flanges on said sinks underlying a drain-board having apertures for receiving said bolts, and nuts cooperating with said bolts and flanges for clamping a drain-board between said lip on said molding and said flanges on said sinks.
3. In an integrated plumbing unit, a drainboard, a continuous internal edge on said drainboard describing a large internal opening in said drain-board, a molding having a longitudinal T slot therein disposed adjacent to said continuous internal edge of said drain-board, the side of said molding facing said drain-board edge having a groove therein to accommodate a sealing material, sealing material in said groove sealing the juncture between said molding and said drainboard edge, a lip on said molding having a low outer edge forming a groove thereunder to accommodate sealing material, sealing material in said groove between said molding lip and the top of said drain-board sealing the juncture therebetween, bolts interlocking with said molding with their heads disposed in the T slot of said molding, a plurality of sinks disposed in side by side relationship below the plane of said drainboard beneath the large internal opening thereof, flanges on said sinks extending under said molding and under said drain-board bottom having apertures therein for receiving said bolts, the bottom of said molding facing having a longitudinal groove therein to accommodate sealing material, sealing material in said longitudinal grooves in the bottom of the said molding sealing the juncture between said molding and said flanges on said sinks, and nuts threaded on said bolts tightened against said flanges on said sinks drawing said molding lip against said drain-board top simultaneously with securing the sinks to the molding and suspending the sinks from the drain-board.
