Description

March 4, HURST SPEED CONTROLLED GOVERNOR Filed March 1, 1949 Fur v r Patented Mar. 4, 1952 SPEED CONTROLLED GOVERNOR Max Hurst, Stuttgart, Germany, assignor to Robert Bosch, G. in. b. H., Stuttgart, Germany Application March 1, 1949, Serial No. 79,013 In Germany October 1, 1948 Claims.
This invention relates to a speed-controlled governor, more particularly for injection pumps, whose movable member acts upon a delivery control member through an intermediate lever with a transmission ratio which can be adjusted through a crank arm. In governors of this type it is advisable to support the. crank arm to be jointed to the intermediate lever in a part of the casing forming the closing portion of the governor casing or at the front wall of said casing. This arrangement renders it difiicult when fitting or removing this casing part to assemble or detach the movable parts of the mechanism.
Itis the object of the invention to design a governor of the type referred to in such a manner that the assembling is facilitated and combined with an easy manufacture and machining of the components of the governor which are to be jointed together and of their casing while at the same time ensuring a faultless operation of the governor.
According to the invention this task is solved in such a way that the guide at the intermediate lever which is required for transmitting the adjusting movements of the crank arm, is'made open at one end so that when attaching or detaching the casing part provided with the crank arm bearing, the crank arm part serving as a lever joint can be engaged with, or disengaged from, the intermediate lever through this open end of the guiding surface.
According to a particularly advantageous mod ification of the invention the part of the intermediate lever facing the governor sleeve has a cylindrical hollow space which is open at least at its upper side facing the delivery control member and whose wall forms the sliding surface for a cylindrical slide as well as a lateral slot which preferably is also open in an upward direction and traversed by a pin provided at the crank arm and jointedly engaging the cylindrical slide. Thus, the assembling of the parts is particularly facilitated and a reliable guide face is formed between the lever arm and the intermediate lever and first of all the movement of this intermediate lever is almost free from friction and jamming is safely prevented. This last-mentioned property can be fostered additionally in centrifugal governors of the conventional type with a slide block arranged between two annular shoulders of a regulating sleeve in such a way that the slide block which is supported on the governor shaft with suflicient radial play and engaged by an arm of the intermediate lever, is guided for longitudinal sliding on a pin which is to be inserted in the front wall of the governor casing, parallel- 1y to the governor shaft. This pin takes the pression on the support of the intermediate lever and the parts jointed thereto and relieves the governor sleeve and the delivery control member from these stresses which otherwise would impair the accuracy of the governor in operation. Therefore, the application of such a guide member is to be recommended in speed governors in which the governor sleeve is coupled with the regulating member through an intermediate lever and a-link.
Further objects and features of the invention will be seen from the following detailed description in connection with the accompanying drawing showing by way of example and purely schematically some embodiments of the invention and in which:
Fig. l is a longitudinal section of a first embodiment;
Fig. 2 is a side view showing a detail of the second embodiment;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal 5601011 on the line III-III of Fig. 4 of the third e nbodiment, and
Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view on the line IV- IV of Fig. 3, the crank arm being shown in a position swung upwards into a higher position than in Fig. 3.
Similar reference numerals denote similar parts in the different views.
Referring now to the drawing in greater detail, it will be seen that a driver I2 is secured on a cam shaft ID of an injection pump ll, shown schematically, two angle levers l3 being jointed to said driver. One arm of this lever engages a centrifugal weight l5. Through each of the two centrifugal weights projects a pin 14 in a radial direction, bearing at its end a spring plate I la against which bears, in a manner known per se, an idle run spring l6 and a maximum speed spring H. The other arm of each angle lever I5 is jointed to an associated radial journal IQ of a governor sleeve consisting of a pin 20 with two annular collars or flanges 2| which pin is longitudinally guided in a recess of driver 12. Between these annular collars is a so-called slide block 22 with two joint pins 23 engaged by a bifurcated arm of the intermediate lever 24.- The other arm of this lever is jointed to a delivery regulating member (governor rod) 25.
A pin 28 of a crank arm 30 secured on a'shaft 29 projects into a longitudinal slot 21 of the intermediate lever 24 which slot is open at one side, i. e., in an upward direction. The shaft 29 is supported in a casing part 3| covering the governor and can be swung by an adjusting lever or memasaauo ber 22 within a range which is defined by two adjustable stops 2! and 24. In the "idle run position shown in Fig. 1 the crank arm engages the stop 32 and the crank pin 28 forming the pivot bearing of the intermediate lever 24 is so close to the governor rod 25 that the transmission ratio of the intermediate lever for the transmission of the movement between governor sleeve 2|, 2| and governor rod 25 is a relative minimum. On the other hand, when the crank arm is swung so far that it engages stop 24, the pin 28 moves relatively far towards the governor sleeve. Thus a considerably larger transmission ratio of the intermediate lever 24 is obtained in such a way that large strokes of the governor rod are obtained already with relatively small strokes of the governor sleeve 20, 2|.
Through the slot 21 which is open towards the governor rod 25 the crank pin 28 can easily be engaged with the intermediate lever 24 when attaching casing part 2| to the injection pump I.
As will be seen from Fig. 2, the slot 21 for inserting pin 28 can also be formed with a mouth end which is open at one edge of the intermediate lever 24, for introducing pin 28.
In the embodiment as per Figs. 3 and 4 a cylindrical hollow space 24 is provided in the intermediate lever 24, at the inner wall surface of which is guided a'cylindrically shaped slide I8, into which projects, through a sufiiciently wide wall slot 21, the crank pin 28 to which the cylindrical slide 38 is jointed. The governor rod 25 is connected, through a link 28, with the intermediate lever 24. The weight of the lever thus rests upon the slide block 22, 23, so that the guide surface of the governor rod is relieved from this weight. In order to relieve also the governor sleeve 20, 2|, from this weight, the slide block 32 supported with ample play on the governor sleeve 20, 2| is shaped so as to pro ect unilaterally from the sleeve and provided with a bore into which engages a guide pin 35 inserted in the front wall of the casing part 2| parallel to the governor sleeve. Through this guide member the pressions on the support originating from the intermediate lever 24 and the link 26 are taken up at a particularly favorable position where no high frictional resistances can be produced. There are no lateral shearing forces acting upon the governor rod 25 and on the governor sleeve 20, 2|, which forces could give rise to increased friction or even to jamming of these parts in their guides.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiments above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
