COMBINED WEATHER-STRIP AND DOOR-SILL.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,486, dated May 23, 1882. Application filed December 13,1881. (N0 model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be itknown that I, JOSEPH SINGER, ofthe township of I'Vayne, county of Montgomery, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined MetallicDoor-SillandWeather-StripforWooden Buildings, of which the following is a specification.

The object oflny said invention is to produce a combined door-sill and weather-strip for wooden buildings which shall protect the frame and edge of the floor of the building to which itis applied, at the lower portion of the door-opening, from the weather, and thus preserve said parts from decay. This object is accomplished by constructing said combined sill and weatherstrip in a single casting, which shall also be adapted to receive the lower ends of the doorframe and be securely attached thereto.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved sill and strip; Fig.2, a top or plan view of one end thereof, and Fig. 3 a transverse vertical sectional view, as seen when looking to the right from the dotted line :0 or.

In said drawings the portion marked A represents the body of the sill, or the portion forming the door-step; B, the portion forming the weather-strip, and O projections to which the wooden door-frame is to be attached. The wooden door-frame and door are indicated by dotted lines in the relative positions they 00- cupy to this device and to each other when the door is in shutposition. The two portions representing the door-frame are marked D D respectively, and that representing the door is marked E.

It is a well-known fact that where the usual construction is followed in the door-sills of wooden buildings decay of the edges of the sill, of the portions of the floor which abut against the same, and eventually of the timbers upon which the same rest, is soon produced by the action of the rain which beats in under the door and soaks down into the interstices between the several parts. By reason of the construction of my improved combined door-sill and weather-strip, in which a ridge of metal is raised entirely around the door-opening,no water is permitted to pass, and therefore, there being no openings whatever through my sill, the whole of the wooden portions, including the timbers beneath, are protected from dampness and decay. The necessity of forming holes in the sill is obviated by forming the upwardlyprojecting wings O O thereon, to which the J frame of the door is secured, which, with the flanges a a, form all needed foot-fastenings for said frame.

I desire to say here that I regard merely plating the sill with metal as entirely inadequate to accomplish my purpose, as holes must be formed through such plating to secure it to said sill. In order to realize the full benefit from my invention the device must be cast in a single piece, and so near the identical form shown as to possess all its described qualities and characteristics.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1.Acombinedmetallicdoor-sill and weatherstrip for wooden buildings cast in asingle piece and constructed, as specified, with the raised portions B a a,whereby rain is prevented from entering the house or reaching any wooden portion below said sill, substantially as specified.

2. A combined metallic door-sill and weatherstrip having the foot portion A, the weather strip or ridge B, the projecting portions 0, to which the wooden frame is attached, and the flanges a a, against which the back sides of the frame parts rest, all cast in a single piece, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes specified.
