This invention relates to a base for use with a soda fountain stool, the primary object of which is to allow the stool to be moved towards or away from the fountain bar and to be retained in any adjusted position relative to the bar.

A further object of this invention is to provide an adjustable base for a soda fountain stool which is relatively simple in design and construction; simple to assemble and repair, easy to manipulate by the occupant of the stool, and very efficient for its intended purpose.

A further object of this invention is to provide an adjustable base for a stool comprising an elongated support, transversely spaced longitudinal channels carried by said base, a transversely extending plate secured to the stool having end portions slidably received in said channels, and a releasable latch means for retaining said plate and stool in adjusted position on said support.

These, together with various ancillary objects and features of the invention which will later become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by the device, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated by way of example only in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention as applied to a stool;

Figure 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 2-2 of Figure l; and

Figure 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view through the latch and one of the side members of the adjustable base.

Specific reference is now made to the drawings. In the several views in the accompanying drawings and in the following specification reference characters indicate corresponding elements throughout.

Indicated generally at I is a substantially rectangular support having transversely extending spaced end members [2 and M which are appropriately secured to spaced, longitudinally extending side members 16 and I8. Each of the side members includes an upper, substantially L-shaped bar 20 which is either integral with or secured to a base plate 22 forming an elongated channel 24 with the base member. Thus it will be seen that the rectangular support 10 includes in efiect a pair of transversely spaced longitudially extending channel members. Spacer blocks 26 are interposed between the base plate 22 and the horizontal leg of each of the L-shaped bars 20 and a screw 28 extends through the horizontal leg of the bar 20, the spacer block 26 and the base plate 2 2. The spacer blocks secured adjacent the ends of the L-shaped bar 20 and in the channels 24 serve as stops to limit the longitudinal movement of the stool on the rectangular v support.

The stool consists of the conventional seat member 30 supported on a stem 32 which is threaded at its free end and received in a thread- ,ed aperture 34 in the web portion 36 of an inverted U-shaped plate, the leg portions 38 of which include lateral extensions 49 which are slidably received in the longitudinally extending, laterally spaced opposed channels 24. Thus it will be seen that the stool together with the U-shaped plate are slidable on the rectangular support Ill toward or away from the soda fountain bar 42.

In order to retain the stool in a fixed adjusted position relative to the bar 42, a releasable latch means is provided which consists of a latch bar 44 pivoted intermediate its ends as at 46 to upstanding lugs 48 carried at the upper surface of one of the L-shaped bars At one of its ends, the latch bar 44 carries a friction member 50. preferably in the form of a rubber protuberance which is adapted to extend through an aperture 52 in the L-shaped bar 20. A leaf spring54 is secured as at 56 to the L-shaped bar 20 to the rear of the upstanding lugs 48, the spring 54, abutting the undersurface of the other end of the latch bar and normally urging the friction member 50 through the aperture 52 and into gripping engagement with one of the extensions 40.

In practical operation, an occupant sits on the seat and if he finds that the seat is not properly spaced from the soda fountain bar 42, he depresses the latch bar 44 with his foot against the action of the spring 54 to remove the friction member from the aperture 52 and release the same from its gripping engagement with the extension 40. By shifting his weight, the occupant can move his seat and the inverted U- shaped plate towards or away from the bar 42 and upon releasing the latch bar 44, the friction member 50 will again engage the extension 50 and retain the stool in its proper adjusted position relative to the soda fountain bar 42.

In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. 'A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.

It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. An adjustable base for a stool comprising a substantially rectangular support having a base plate and longitudinally extending L-shaped bars, said bars including horizontal and vertical legs, the latter being secured to said base plate and forming channels therewith, an inverted U- shaped plate having legs and a web portion, the latter being secured centrally to the stool, lateral extensions carried by the legs of said plate and slidably received between said horizontal le s of said bars and said base plate, and a releasable latch means for retaining said extensions and said stool in adjusted position on said support.

2. The combination of claim' 1 wherein said latch means includes a latch bar pivoted intermediate its ends upon one of said horizontal legs of said bars, an aperture in said one of said horizontal legs, a friction member carried at one end of said latch bar and receivable in said aperture to grip one of said extensions disposed beneath said one of said horizontal legs, and resilient means for urging said friction member into engagement with said one of said extensions.
