7 1 claim; (01. 25-129) This invention relates to an apparatus for forming articles from plastic materials and more particularly to a machine for producing articles of pottery such as dishes'and plates.
An object of this inventionto provide a machine for producing suitable articles of pottery in a much more rapid and efficient manner than prior art structures were capable of producing.
A further object of this machine is to provide a pneumatic controlled pottery die which consists of a continuously moving male half and a selectively moving and continuously rotating female half which due to the novel control system used in the invention will enable a plurality of dishes or plates or similar articles to be produced in a more eflicient and rapidmanner.
A further object of this invention is to provide a female die half of novel construction which will enable the rapid interchangement of die plates so as to permit several different types of pottery to be readily and easily manufactured by the machine.
Still further objects of the invention reside in the provision of a pottery die and pottery manufacturing machine that is Strong, durable, highly efiicient in operation, simple in construction and manufacture, and which is capable of rapidly producing a plurality of dishes or the like in a relatively inexpensive manner.
These, together with the various ancillary objects of the invention which will become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by this pottery die, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, by way of example only, wherein:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the invention;
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional detail as taken along line 22 in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view of the invention as taken along line 3-3 in Figure 1;
Figure 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional detail of the drive means for rotating the female half of the pottery die;
Figure 5 is an exploded view shown in perspective of the casing and die plate comprising the female die half;
Figures 6 through 9 are schematic diagrams showing the various stages of the operation of the machine; and
Figure 10 is a schematic diagram of the control mechanism used in this invention.
With continuing reference to the accompanying drawings wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views,
reference numeral l0 generally designates an angle iron framewhich consists of vertically extending studs to some of which studs there are secured guide blocks I2 and I4 by any convenient means. Welded or otherwise secured to other of thevertical studs are angle iron supports l6 and I8 on which there are positioned guide blocks 20 and 22 which are capable of being laterally ad-, justed by set screws 24 and 26.
Slidably mounted in these guide blocks is the base plate 28 and an upper support plate 30 of a movable. carriage, which consists of vertical guide rods'32 and 34 terminally secured to the base plate 2B'and the support plate 3|).v
Mounted on the guides 32 and 34 is a slide consisting of upper and lower plates 36'and 38 which are provided with tubular. portions, extending therebetween and indicated at 40 and 42 which slidingly embrace the guides 32 and 34.
By means of brackets 44 there is secured to the support plate 30 a pneumatic cylinder 46 which has positioned therein a piston 48 to which piston there is connected a shaft 50. The shaft 50 extends through the gland nut 52 and is journalled by means of bearings 54 and 58 to slide plates 36 and 38. Keyed to the shaft 50 as at 58 is a beveled gear 68 which is driven by a beveled gear 62 which in turn is driven by the prime mover 64. The bottom end of the shaft 50 is integrally formed with the top plate 66 of the female die casing generally indicated at 68 which includes an end wall and opposed side walls 10 and 12 to which side walls there are secured guide strips 14 and 16 for reception of the female guide plate 18 which is provided with longitudinal grooves and 82 therein. Secured to the end wall 12 by means of the hinge 84 is an end wall 86 which is provided with a hinged and apertured member 88 for engagement over the threaded rod 90 in order that the door 86 may be secured in such position as to lock the guide plate 18 within the casing 68 by means of the wing nut 92.
A suitable endless belt 94 is entrained about sprockets 96 mounted on the frame l8 and the sprockets 9E and hence the belt 94 may be driven through any suitable power take-off. Secured in spaced relationship on the endless belt 94 are a plurality of male die halves 98 which are adapted to fit into interengagement with the die plate 18. The endless belt 94 consists of opposed parallel moving links I80 interconnected by spacing bars I02 on which the male die halves 98 are secur-ed. Angle bars I04 are provided for guarding the links I80 during passage over the base plate 28 and likewise angle plates l 06 are provided for supporting the endless belt on the frame. The operating mechanism of this device is driven by a pneumatic system which includes an air compressor I08 which supplies air to a valve IIO through conduit II2. When the valve H is in proper position air will be permitted to pass through conduit II4 to the cylinder 46. Upon entrance of the air into the cylinder 46 the piston 48 will be actuated pushing shaft 50 downwardly until the latch mechanism' I I6 mounted on the plate 36 contacts the stop II8 on the rod I20 which in turn is connected with the valve mechanism I22 so as to actuate such to permit flow of the air from the air compressor through conduit I22 to the valve and hence through conduit I26 to the cylinder I28 mounted on the frame I0. A piston I30 in the cylinder I28 will be actuated to urge the base plate 28 and hence the entire carriage to move corresponding to'the continuous movement of the endless belt 94. When the carriage has moved sufliciently to permit the actuating member I32 to contact stop I34 the valve mechanism IIO will be urged to a different position permitting air to pass through conduit I36 and hence raise the piston 48. This will in turn raise the plate 36 until it contacts the stop I38 actuating the valve I22 and permitting passage of air through conduit I40 returning the piston I 30to its initial position.
In operation the device is operated by placing a coating of plastic material such as clay and as indicated at I50 on the die 98. When air is permitted to enter the cylinder 46 thus lowering the female die 18 and causing such to travel along with the male die 98 until the plate or dish is properly turned.
Since from the foregoing the construction and advantages of this pottery die will be readily apparent, a further description is believed to be unnecessary.
However, since numerous modifications will readily occur to those skilled in the art after a consideration of the foregoing specification and accompanying drawings, it is not intended to limit the invention to the precise embodiment shown and described, but all suitable modifications and equivalents may be readily resorted to which fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the claimed as new is:
A die half comprising a casing, said casing comprising a top, an end wall and side walls seinvention, what is cured to each other, guides secured to said side walls, a glass die plate slidably engaging said guides, and another end wall pivotally attached to one of said side walls for locking said die plate in said casing- WILLIAM M. GLAAB.
