Description

Dec. 18, 1951 G. J. DILLEMUTH NEEDLE, THREAD, AND THIMBLE KIT Filed Nov. 21 195G INVENTOR GEORGE .u- DILLEMUTl-l Patented Dec. 18, 1951 UNITED STATES "PATENTI'VOYFFICE Application November 21, 1950, Serial sarca m";- s'olaims. (01. 223-105) v l This invention relates toa needle, thread and thimble kit.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a needle, thread and thimble kit wherein the needles and thimble are retained on an attachment adapted to be combined with the spool of thread and wherein the portion thereof containilng the needles enters the center hole of the spoo It is another object of the present invention to provide in an attachment adapted to support needles and a thimble which can be fixed to a spool wherein there is separable top parts normally held together by spring action to confine the thimble and wherein upon release of one of the parts against the spring action the thimble can be released and access can be had to the chamber portion confining the needles.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a combined needle, thread and thimble kit which is of simple construction, utilizes the spool as the supporting body, inexpensive to manufacture, has a minimum number of parts, easy to operate, compact, durable, of pleasing appearance and efiicient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understand ing of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. l is a perspective view of the attachment for the spool with the thimble disposed thereon.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged top plan view of the attachment illustrating the manner in which one of the parts is separated from the other part to provide access to the needle compartment.
Fig. 3 is a Vertical sectional view of the attachment supported on the spool and as viewed on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 2 and through the hinge connection of one of the parts with the other part.
Referring now to the figures, it represents an attachment for supporting a thimble H and needles l2. This attachment comprises a top plate part or portion l3 and a hollow depending needle retaining portion l4 flanged at its upper end, as indicated at l5, and connected to the underside of the top plate !3. The hollow de pending portion I4 serves to confine the needles l2 and the bottom thereof is closed, as indicated at [6. On the bottom is a resilient support 5? for receiving the points of the needles l2 and to prevent the same from becoming blunted.
The hollow depending portion l4 fits within a hole I8 of the spool 19, as shown in Fig. 3. The
top plate I3 has struck down projections 21 which pierce the upper end of the spool Is to retain the attachment) in place upon the spool andagainst rotational and axial displacement therefrom. a
The top plate 13 has a central hole-22 through which the needles l2 may pass. This top part also has a semi-circular flange 24 projecting upwardly from one side thereof and to which the end of an arcuate-shaped spring 25 is attached. A movable element or cover of a little more than half circular shape, and as indicated at 25' is hingedly connected to the top plate l3 by a pivot grommet 26. This cover has an upstanding peripheral flange 2'! about part of which the spring 25 extends and is locked therewith, as indicated at 28. The action of the spring 25 is to urge the cover 25 into a closing position over the opening 22. The flange 21 of the cover 25' has a handle projection 21 by which the cover can be moved to its open position, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and against the action of the spring 25.
Struck upwardly from the top plate [3 is an arcuate portion 3| under which one side of thimble H can be placed. 0n the cover 25' is an arcuate portion 32 adapted to extend over the opposite side of the thimble l l whereby to hold the thimble II in place upon the attachment. The function of the cover 25' is thus to hold the thimble H in place and at the same time to serve as a cover for the needle compartment. Thread 33 is coiled upon the spool l9.
It will be apparent that the attachment II) can be sold as a separate unit and when inserted in the spool IS a combined needle, thread and thimble kit is provided.
The spring 25 is made secure upon the flange 24 by a struck projection 34 and by the passage of the end of the spring through openings in the flange, as indicated at 35.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In combination, a spool having a central opening therein and an end face, an attachment comprising a top plate and means securing said top plate to the end face of the spool, said top plate having an upstanding projection adapted to receive one side of a thimble, a movable element hingedly connected to the top plate and top plategto tlfezendifatbe of theaspool; saidi ttop- 10 plate having-arrupstanding projection'adaptedto receive one side of a thimble, a cover member hingedly connected to the top plate and havin'g a projection adapted to engage the -;other1;side.-,@ of a thimble and spring biasing means urging to- 15 gether the cover member with its upstanding p'roe jection toward the upstanding mfijfiotionpi their top plate whereby to secure the thimble to the at tachment, said top plate having a central' openz-i ing, a depending hollow pgrtion connected to the 20 undersidezofrthe itop iplateundemthempening and; providing .;ai. ;compartment=-.fo12 =needles said i-porrtiomadapted to:.-extend;.through.the central openingjofr-thespool andisaidicover member adjustable;
