RB.sPoomaRqv SUSPENDER BUCKLE.
Patented May 9, 1882.
S Y M R m A UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK B. sPooNER, on BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SUSPENDER -BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,777, dated May 9, 1882.
Application filed February 14, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK B. SPoo NER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to facilitate detaching a loop or ring from a buckle-fornistance, detaching the ring at the upper ends of a suspendcr strap from the suspenderbuckle.
The invention consists in a spring for pulling the sliding frame upward for the purpose of preventing the ring from dropping from the plate.
The invention further consists in tongues on the buckle-plate, which tongues are provided with beveled jaws for holdingthe ringin place on the tongue.
The invention further consists in parts and details of construction, as will be fully described hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved buckle and of the suspender and suspenderstrap. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal or front elevation of the sliding frame or plate on the buckle-plate. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal or front elevation of my improved buckle, showing the sliding plate drawn down to release the ring from the buckle.
The metal plate A is provided with a longitudinal slot, B, at the upper end of which a spiral or other suitable spring, 0, is attached to the plate A, the lower end of which spring is attached to the upper end of a frame or recessed plate, D, adapted to slide on the back of the plate A, to the lowerend of w hichframe D a strap, cord, or holder, E, is attached for pulling'lhis frame D downward. This strap or holder can be attached directly to thelower end of the frame D, or to an intermediate loop attached to the frame D. A bent tongue, F,
iproject-s upward within the middle open part of theframeD, and this ton gue passes through a slot or aperture, G, in the lower part of the plate A. The upper end of the tongue is bent to form a hook, H, or the upper end of the tongue is provided with a head or transverse piece, which hook, head, or transverse piece must be made to catch on the edges of the aperture G, so that when the frame'D is pulled downward a certain distance the hook or head H catches on the sides of the aperture Gand checks the movement of the frame D, thus preventing the tongue F from being-withdrawn entirely from the aperture G, and also preventing undue stretching of the spring 0, and dislocation and disarrangement of the parts as the frame 1) is guided in its movements by the tongue F.
The plate A is provided with a slot, J,on each side of the slotB, which slots J open into the slot B at the lower end of the same, thus forming a spring-tongue, K, at each side of the slot B. The tongues K are provided at the lower ends and on the inner edges with cam projections or jaws L,-i projecting from the surface of the tongues, and beveled outward from the upper toward the lower ends.
The Suspender-band M can be held adj ustable to the plate A by any of the usual devices.
The ring or loop N is attached. to suspenderstraps O of the usual construction.
The sliding frame D can be constructed in different ways, but should preferably be provided with a recess or aperture behind the tongues K, so that they can be pressed inward. The spring 0 always holds the frame D raised,
whereby the tongueF prevents the ring N from dropping from the plate A.
The operation is as follows: The ring N is passed over the tongue F until it rests between the bottom of the same and the front of the plate A, as shown in Fig. 1. During this movement of the ringNit slides up the beveledjaws L, thereby pressing the lower ends of the tongues K inward until the ring has passed over the lower ends of the jaws L, so that the tongues K then snap outward, and the lower ends of the jaws L will be above the ring and will prevent the ring from being pushed upward, as the ring would strike against the lower ends of these jaws L, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2. The pants or other article will thus be suspended from the tongue F and plate A by means of the ring N. If the ringN is to be detached from the buckle-plate A, the frame D is pulled downward in the direction of the arrow aby means of the holder E, or by pulling on the lower end of the frame D itself. Ifthe frame D is pulled in the direction of the arrow at until the hook or head H catches on the lower end of the plate A, as shown in Fig. 4, the tongue F will have been withdrawn from in front of the ring N, and this ring will drop from the plate A, as there will be nothing to hold it on this plate A. As soon as the holder or strap E is released the spring 0 will draw the frame D upward again.
I have described my improved buckle as applied to suspenders; but it is evident that it can be used in harness or for other purposes as well.
The hook N can be attached to and detached from the buckle in a very simple manner, and very rapidly and conveniently.
The entire mechanism is verysimple and not apt 'to get out of order.
Having thus fully described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure bv Letters Patent-- 7 1. In a buckle, the combination, with the buckle-plate, ot' a sliding frameprovided with a hook passing through an aperture in the buckle plate, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a buckle, the combination, with the plate A, of the sliding frame D, provided with a hook or tongue, F, and of the spring (1, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3.111 a buckle, the combination, with the plate A, provided with springtongues K, havwith spring-tongues K, having jaws at their' lower ends, of the sliding frame D,'provided with a tongue, F, passing through the aperture G, and having a hook or head at its up-' per end, and of the spring 0, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a buckle, the combination, with the plate A, of the sliding frame D, provided with a hook or tongue, F, the spring 0, and the holder or straps E, attached to the frame D, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
6. In a buckle, the combination, with the plate A, provided with an aperture, G, of the sliding frame D, provided with a tongue, F, passing through the aperture G, and provided at its end with a hook or head, H, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
7. In a buckle, the combination, with the plate A, provided with slots 13 and J, forming spring-tongues K, of the sliding frame D, provided with a tongue, F, and ot' the spring 0,
substantially as herein shown and described, andfor the purpose set forth.
