Description

-vww w (No Mqdel.) E. 4KEMPSHALL,
SASH FASTENER.
N. 257,722. Patented May 9, 1382.
UNITED STATES PATENT Errea..
ELEAZER KEMPSHALL, OF NEVVBRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.`
SASH-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICA'IJIONI forming part of Letters Patent N o. 257,722, dated May 9, 1,882,
Application tiled March 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELEAZEE KEMPsHALL, of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SashFasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sash-fastcners of the class which are designed to be inserted through one ot the vertical rails of the sash, and in which a cast-metal case is screw-threaded on its periphery and receives a slotted bolt and spring held within the case by a pin which passes through the sides of the case and through the slot in that part ot' the body of the bolt which is within the case; and
the objects of my invention are to make a better and more substantial bolt than those generally found in this class and to produce the same at a small cost. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2, an end 1 view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on line x .r ot' Fig. 2, showing the bolt and spring in elevation; and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section on line y y ot' Fig. 2.
I make the case A substantially otcylindrical form, of cast metal, all in one piece, and preferably with a screw-thread 011 its periphery. I also form a slightly-projecting jange, c', at`the large end, which, l'or convenience of description, I will term the outer end.7
The case A is cast hollow to receive the bolt B and spring a, and the orifice in itsouter end, and also that end ofthe bolt, is in the forni of a circle truncated or slabbed off upon two opposite sides, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The orice at the inner end ol' the case and the portion of the bolt which lits therein is of less size and of a circular form.
The stem of the bolt is straight and of unil form size from the `shoulder b, against which one end ofthe spring a abnts, to a point wholi y outside of the c ase, and no part of the inner end of the bolt is of any larger size.
(No model.)
The extreme outer end of the bolt is provided with a knob,f, for use as an operatinghandle.
The body ofthe bolt has a longitudinal slot, c, through it at a point which is wholly within the case.
The bolt and spring are inserted from the outer cud and secured therein by the transverse pin cl, which passes through the sides of the case and the slot in the bolt. Said pin limits the movement ofthe bolt in both directions.
l I make the case ot' a largerdiameter than ordinary bolts ot' this class and shorter than the width of ordinary sash-rails.
In order to put the device in place, a hole is bored partly through the rail C, Fig. 4, ot' size proper to receive the case A, and the remainder ot' the way a smaller hole is bored, large enough to let pass freely the smallend ofthe bolt, as shown in said Fig. 4. The device is then screwed in place by applying a wrench to the flattened sides ofthe outer end ofthe bolt.
I am aware of the Letters Patent to M. L. Kingsley, April 9, 1878, E. B. Beach, September 21,1875, and to Franklin Babcock, September 29, 1868, and I hereby disclaim all that is therein shown and described.
I claim as my invention- A sash-fastener consisting of the solid cylindrical case having a screwthreaded periphery and the liattened orifice at its outer end, the spring-actuated bolt projecting from both ends of said case and having its outer end of aattened form corresponding to that of the flattened orifice in the case, and having also the longitudinal slot through which the pin passes, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
ELEAZER KEMPsHALL.
