. 1 Claim. 1
This inventionlappertains to novel and useful improvements'in devices for extinguishing lighted cigarettes and retaining the residue.
An object of this invention is to crush the lighted portion of a cigarettdcigar, or the like and retain the residual as well as the remainder of the said cigarette, cigar, and the like in a convenient manner.
Anotherobject of this invention is to-'provide means for carrying out the Aabove mentioned function. t
Another purpose of this invention is to lprovide a receptacle having improved'crushing` means therein,v pivoted in a slot and bodily Amovable within the said receptacle. v y
Another purpose of this-invention is to provide means forresiliently biasing the said crushing means or baille in a predetermined direction.
Another purpose of this invention is to provide an apertured housing, whereby, through the medium of the said apertures, access may be Ahad tothe said baler'neans.
Another purpose of this invention is to provide common means for detachably retaining the said receptacle cover thereon and for actuating the said baile means.
Another purpose of this invention is to provide an extremely inexpensive device of the character described adaptable in many environments, such as in automobiles, domiciles, offices, and the like.
Ancillary objects and features of novelty will become apparent to those skilled in the art, in :following the description of the preferred form of the present invention, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the preferred form of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the invention shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional-view of the invention shown in Figure 2 and taken substantially on the line 3-3-thereof and in the direction of the arrows;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the crushing means utilized in conjunction with and forming part of the present invention;
Figure 5 is an elevational fragmentary View illustrating particularly the slots utilized in conjunction With journaling the bale means within the said housing;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional view illustrating a detail of construction and taken substantially on the line 6-6 of Figure 1 and in the direction of the arrows; and
Figure 7 is a fragmentary back view of the invention shown inFigure-Ll," illustrating an aperture utilized for Athe purpose 'of retaini'n'gfth'e receptacle on a predetermined anchor means.
Referring now in detail 4to the illustrated -lprererred embodiment of the present inventioniike vreference characters -are used Ythroughout 'to in- `predeterminedwall within the said housing.l The residue is then dropped to -the bottom portion of the said receptacle by lifting the actuating rod, thereby bodily moving the crushingmeans within the said housing and permitting `gravity -to pull thev cigarette accompanied by the -ashes to the bottom portion of the said receptacle.
The housing is provided with side walls, 9, I0, II and I2, a bottom I3 and an open top. A cover I4 is detachably received on the open end of the said receptacle, and if desired, may have iianges I6 extending about the marginal edges thereof adapted to engage the upper portions of the said receptacle. A pair of apertures I8 and 20, respectively, are provided in the said cover, and the said apertures may have tapered walls 22 for the purpose of directing the lighted portion of the cigarette centrally thereof.
Bale means for crushing cigarettes, cigars, and the like is provided. For this construction, reference is made primarily to Figure 4 wherein there is disclosed a baille 24 having a bent portion 26 integral therewith. Secured to the said baffle 24 and extending therefrom is an arcuate rod 28 having a knurled button or extension 30 detachably associated therewith. This button may be threadedly received, or if desired, frictionally engaged with the said rod 28. Guide means or extensions 32 are integral With the side portions of the said baiile 24, While a bight portion 34 is provided along the longitudinal marginal edge of the bale.
A pivot pin 36 having a pair of oppositely disposed enlarged heads is received in the said bight portion 34 and extends through a pair of oppositely disposed parallel slots 38, one of which is provided in the side wall I0 and the other of which is provided in the opposite side wall 9.
An extension 40 is provided on each of the said slots 38 and the said pivotgpin 36 is normally seated therein.
Means for resiliently biasing the said bafe 24 within the said receptacle is provided. This means is preferably a coil spring 42 secured to the said arm 28 and a hook 44 provided on the back Wall of the receptacle. To crush and extinguish a lighted cigarette, the crusher is pivoted and displaced in the receptacle toward the inside surface of a part of the wall il. This surface forms an anvil which is cooperative with the crusher in squeezing the lighted cigarette to extinguish it. y
When it is desired to permit cigarette butts, ashes, and the like to drop within the receptacle, after crushing the lighted end portion thereof. the rod 28 which projects through a slot 46 provided in the cover i4 is simply lifted, thereby sliding the pivot pin 36 within the slot 38. Gravity` then pulls the ashes, cigarette stumps and other residue to the bottom portion of the receptacle.
In emptying the said receptacle, the extension `3(1 is removed Yfrom the rod 2B and the cover I4 --Having described the invention, an operative embodiment is disclosed. However, various departures may be made therefrom Without departing from the spirit ofthe invention. Accordingly, limitation issought only in accordance with the scope of thefollowing claim.
-Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A device for extinguishing and retaining ciga- 4 rettes comprising a receptacle including a first, second, third and fourth side wall and a bottom, means for crushing cigarettes pivoted in said receptacle and bodily displaceable therein, said rst wall forming an anvil for a cigarette and cooperative with said crushing means in extinguishing the cigarette, a cover, means for detachably securing said cover to said receptacle and for pivotally actuating and bodily displacing said crushing means, said cover being provided with cigarette receiving apertures for rendering access to said crushing means, said crushing means comprising a baflie, two of said Walls having slots BENJAMIN F. MICHEL.
