It is among theobjects of the. invention. to provide a readily portable glue dispenser of small. size so. that it can be conveniently carried.
and operated by; one. man but. which, at the same time, ..has a. large glue capacity and is effective to-spread. glue in thin. layersor spotsunder pressure, which is, simple and. durable in construction and economical to manufacture, which efiectively prevents spilling or smearing of the glue and depositing glue on thehands. and 010th?- ingof the workman. and is light in weight, easy tense, and highly effective in, obtaining a com-. plete and even distribution of the glue on the contacting surfaces of parts to be. glued to ether.

If the lever 25 is now manually operated to force the piston 22 toward the opposite end wall N5 of the cylinder, the spring 3| will first lose its compression and will then exert a tension force between the piston 22 and the slide valve arm 30, this spring being connected at its respec tively opposite ends to the piston and to the slide valve arm, and will move the slide valve to a position in which it closes off the aperture 21 before the piston 22 reaches the end wall Hi. This closing of the aperture 2! will prevent return flow of glue from the cylinder back into the container II, and the glue in the cylinder will then be forced by the piston through the tubular fitting 34 into the conduit l3 which is threaded at one end into the fitting 34, and through the conduit into the applicator l2.
A push rod 35 is slidably mounted in the handle bore 2| outwardly of the piston rod 23, and has on its outer end a knob or saddle 36 by means of which pressure can be applied to the push rod by the thumb or palm of the hand of the workman using the glue dispenser. The push rod 35 is urged outwardly of the handle by a compression spring 31 which surrounds the push rod in the bore 2| between an abutment 3B fixed in the bore, and a washer 39 secured on the push rod. Outward movement of the push rod is limited by an abutment 40 at the outer end of the bore 2| which abutment is apertured for the passage of the push rod 35 therethrough.
The piston rod 23 and the push rod 35 have head formations on their adjacent ends and, when the force exerted on the lever 25 is not sumcient to force the glue from the pump cylinder into the applicator l2, additional pressure may be exerted on the glue by manually pushing the.
knob or saddle 36 inwardly of the handle.
The container may conveniently comprise a hollow can of cylindrical or other desired shape, having one open end and having at its other end a bottom wall 4| secured to the wall of the cylinder I 5 by suitable means, such as the cap screws 46 extended through apertures in the outwardly flanged, upper portion of the cylinder wall l5 and threaded into screw-threaded recesses in the bottom wall 4| of the container, as particularly illustrated in Figure 4.
A flanged cover 42 fits onto the open end of the container I and is-provided with a handle 43in the form of a staple for facilitating removal of the cover from the container. The container has, on one side, a handle 44 in the shape of a downwardly directed hook, and has at its opposite side a generally C-shaped handle 45 which extends outwardly from the side of the container and serves as a prop for supporting the container when the device is laid on its side.
The applicator I2 is a thin walled, hollow box of elongated rectangular shape having a width slightly leSs than the width of the groove into which the glue is to be applied so that the applicator will slide freely in the groove. Where the work involves the application of glue into grooves of different widths, a set of applicators of different widths may be provided and may be selectively connected to the tube or spout |3 to accommodate the dispenser to the particular job.
In the arrangement illustrated the applicator has spaced apart, substantially parallel side walls 4'! and 48, end walls 49 and 50, and a bottom wall 5|. .The bottom wall is provided with two generallyrectangular openings 52 and 53 which con stitute outlet or dispensing openings for the 849 plicator through which the glue flows from the interior of the applicator to the Work surface to which it is applied. The dispensing of glue through these openings is controlled by a valve mechanism operated by the trigger lever 25 of the pump. This valve mechanism comprises two rectangular slide plates 54 and 55 slidably mounted on the inner surface of the bottom wall 5| of the applicator in position to respectively overlie the openings 52 and 53. A shaft 56 is journaled at its lower end in a socket provided on the inner side of the bottom wall 5| substantially at the center of the bottom wall area, and this shaft extends from the bottom wall through the top cover 51 of the applicator and is journaled in the cover. A bar 58 is secured at its mid-length location to the shaft 56 near the bottom wall 5| of the applicator, and links 59 and 60 connect the respectively opposite ends of the bar 58 to the slide plates 54 and 55 so that when the shaft is rotated in one direction, the slide plates Will be moved toward each other and will uncover the openings 52 and 53, and when the shaft is rotated in the opposite direction, the plates will be moved away from each other and toward the corresponding ends of the applicator to cover the openings 52 and 53 and preclude further flow of glue through these openings. A radially projecting arm or crank 6| is secured at one end to the shaft 5 6 above or at the outer side of the cover 51, and the end of the actuator l4 opposite the end connected to the trigger lever 25 is connected to this crank 6 I.
The actuator I4 is preferably a Bowden wire or cable having a flexible outer casing 62, one end of which is secured to the cover 5! by a clamp 63, and the other end of which is secured to the trigger guard 20 by the clamp nuts 64. The wire or core is slidable in the casing 62 and is secured at one end to the outer end of the crank: 6|, and is secured at its opposite end to the trigger lever 25 at the end of this lever opposite the end engagingthe piston rod 23. The wire 65- is secured to the trigger lever by an adjustable connection including a nut 66 threaded onto an- 29 and move the piston 22 toward the end wall l6 of the cylinder, thereby forcing glue from the cylinder through the spout or conduit l3 into the applicator, the actuator l4 simultaneously rotates the shaft 56 and moves the slide plates 54 and 55 in a direction to open the holes 52 and 53 in the bottom wall of the applicator so that the lue forced into the applicator by the piston 22 will flow through these holes onto the surface of the Work piece. As soon as the trigger lever 25 is released, the spring 32 will retract the piston 22 in the cylinder l5 and will simultaneously move the trigger lever so that the portion of this lever within the trigger guard 20 i moved away from the grip 9. This movement of the trigger lever acting through the Bowden wire actuator l4 will rotate the shaft 56 in a direction; to move the slide plates 54 and 55 back over the holes 52 and 53, thereby terminating any further dispensing of glue from the applicator.

A boss'orfitting on the cover 5-1 receives the corresponding end of the, conduit or-spout l3", and this conduit, is sufficiently rigid sothat the applicator can be slid along a groove in a work pieflcezbymanual .force applied to the grip IF of the dispenser.
Since at times it mayv be desired to use the applicator for spot gluing, means are provided for-- closing oft one. (if the holes in the bottom wall of the applicator to condition the dispenser for this type of operation.
In, the arrangement illustrated; this, means comprises a boss or stem H extendingperpendicularly from. the inner side of the cover 51 into the applicator above the opening 53 and having a bore therethrough, and a counterbore itsend-remote from the cover. stem 1'2 extends through the boss H and through-an aperture in the wallet-thecover' and carries; on its lowerend, aplate 13--of a size andshape to cover the opening 53 when the slide plate 55 is I withdrawn from this opening. A spring 14 surrounds the stem 12 within the counterbore in the boss H, and bears at one end against the end wall of the counterbore, and at its opposite end against an abutment washer 15 secured on the stem to resiliently raise the plate 13 to a position, as illustrated in Figure l, in which it is clear of the slide plate 55. A knob 16 is secured on the end of the stem 12 opposite the end to which the plate 13 is secured, and at the outer side of the cover 51, and a pin 1'! extends through the stem between the knob 16 and the cover 51. A latch 18 is secured to the cover and is engageable by the pin 11 to hold the stem 12 inwardly against the force of spring M with the plate 13 covering the opening 53. When the opening 53 is thus covered, only the opening 52 will be open and this opening 52 may then be used for applying glue spots to a work surface at such locations as may be desired. In order to use the applicator for spot gluing with the opening 53 covered by the plate 13 wire 65 is disconnected from shaft 56 so that the trigger can be used to expel the glue without moving the slide plates 54 and 55. Shaft 56 is turned to a position such that the slide plate are moved inwardly and hole 52 is left open.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential characteristics thereof. embodiment is, therefore, to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description, and all changes which come within the meaning and range of equivalency of the claims are, therefore, intended to be embraced therein.
What is claimed is:
l. A glue dispenser comprising a hand operated pump, a container mounted on said pump and providing a glue reservoir communicating with the interior of said pump, a glue applicator, a tubular conduit connecting said applicator to said pump, first valve means between said container and said pump, second valve means in said applicator controlling the outlet thereof, and means connecting said pump to said first and second valve means and operative to close said first valve means and open said second valve The present 6. means-"whensaid pump is operated to'forceglue fromsai'd; container to saidapplicator.
2": A gluedispenser comprising a pump includingacylinden'ahandle secured to one end, of said cylinder, a piston reciprocable in said cylinder; a piston rod. extending from said piston through" said one end of said cylinder into said handle; a' manually operated lever mounted on said-handle and engaging said piston rod to force said pi'ston toward the other end of said cylinder; spring means engaging said piston rod. and resiliently-urging said piston toward said one end of'saidcylinder, aspout extending from said otherendofsaid cylinder, an applicator on the end o'fsaidspoutremote from said cylinder, a containermounted at one end on said cylinder, saidcontainer and said cylinder having registering apertures; providing communication between the interior of saidcontainer and the interior of said-cylinder, a" valve slidably carried bysaid cylinder and movable between a position in which it intercepts said apertures and a position' inwhich itis clear of said apertures, and resilient m'eansconneeting said valve to said piston rod for movement of said valve to its aperture intercepting position when said piston is moved toward said other end of said cylinder.
3. A glue dispenser comprising a pump including a cylinder, a handle secured to one end of said cylinder, a piston reciprocable in said cylinder, a piston rod extending from said piston through said one end of said cylinder into said handle, a manually operated lever mounted on said handle and engaging said piston rod to force said piston toward the other end of said cylinder, spring means engaging said piston rod and resiliently urging said piston toward said one end of said cylinder, a spout extending from said other end of said cylinder, an applicator on the end of said spout remote from said cylinder, a container mounted at one end of said cylinder, said container and said cylinder having registering apertures providing communication between the interior of said container and the interior of said cylinder, a valve slidably carried by said cylinder and movable between a position in which it intercepts said apertures and a position in which it is clear of said apertures, resilient means connecting said valve to said piston rod for movement of said valve to its aperture intercepting position when said piston is moved toward said other end of said cylinder, said applicator having a bottom wall provided with a dispensing opening, valve means in said applicator movable to open and close said dispensing open ing, and actuator means connecting said valve means to said manually operated lever for moving said valve means to open said dispensing opening when said piston is moved toward said opposite end of said cylinder and to close said dispensing opening when said piston is spring retracted toward said one end of said cylinder.

A dispenser comprising a manually operated pump including a cylinder and a piston reciprocable in said cylinder, a container mounted on said cylinder and communicating interiorly with the interior of said cylinder, an applicator comprising a hollow structure having a bottom wall provided with a dispensing opening. a conduit connecting said cylinder to said applicator for the transmission of material from said container to said applicator upon operation of said pump, valve means between said cylinder and said container, means including a spring connecting said valve means to said piston for operation of said valve means coincidentally with said piston to close off said container from said cylinder when said pump is operated to-force material from said cylinder through said conduit to said applicator, valve means in said applicator for opening and closing said dispensing opening, and means connecting said last-mentioned valve means to said pump to open said dispensing opening when said pump is operated to force material from said cylinder to said applicator.

A dispenser comprising a, manually operated pump including a cylinder and a piston reciprocable in said cylinder, a container mounted on said cylinder and communicating interiorly with the interior of said cylinder, an applicator comprising a hollow structure having a bottom wall provided with two spaced apart dispensing openings, a conduit connecting said cylinder to said applicator for the transmission of material from said container to said applicator upon operation of said pump, valve means between said cylinder and said container operated coincidentally with said piston to close off said container from said-cylinder when said pump is operated to force material from said cylinder through said conduit to said applicator, valve means in said applicator for opening and closing said dispensin openings, means connecting said last-mentioned valve means to said pump to open said dispensing openings when said pump is operated to force material from said cylinder to said applicator, and manually operated means carried by said applicator for maintaining one of said dispensing openings closed when said openings are opened by said last-mentioned valve means.
