UNITED STATES JOHN BAUER, OF NEW PATENT OFFICE.
CLEANING ATTACHMENT FOR FERMENTING AND STORAGE TANKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,431, dated May 2, 1882.
Application filed March 20, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may! concern Be it known that I, J OHN BAUER, of the city and county of New York, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cleaning Attachments for Fermenting and Storage Tanks, of which the following is a specification.
Fermentin g and storage tanks used by brewers are provided with waste-outlets in the bottom, through which the water is discharged when washing them out. These outlets are commonly closed by wooden plugs, which are liable to be knocked out and waste the beer, and when the plugs are taken out for cleaning the tanks the waste water is allowed to run out over the floor of the cellar or other place where the tanks are placed.
An important object of my invention is to provide such atank with an attachment in the bottom, to which a hose may be coupled for carrying off the wash-water, which cannot become accidentally opened so as to allow the beer to waste, and which will be more desirable in every way than the common plug ordinarily employed.
The invention consists in the combination, with a metal socket adapted to be inserted in the bottom of the tank, of a hose-coupling fit ted to the outer or lower end of said socket and a screw-plug fitted to the inner or upper end thereof. This socket is adapted to be inserted into a hole in the bottom of the tank, so that its upper end will be about flush with the bottom, and it may be provided with an external screw-thread to enableit to be screwed into place. 7
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a sectional view of a portion of a tank with my improved attachment applied to it, and Fig. 2 represents a side view of the attachment with the hose-coupling removed.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in both figures.
Adesignates the side of the tank, and B the bottom thereof.
0 designates a metal socket, which, as here shown, is provided with an external screwthread, so that it may be screwed into the hole prepared for it in the bottom B. Below the screw-thread isa collar or flange, a, which bears I against the bottom B, or against an interposed washer or packing, b, which forms a tight joint, and below the flange is a polygonal portion, 0, to which a wrench may be applied for screwin g the socket into place. To the outer or lower end of the socket O is secured a hose-coupling composed of the ordinary nipple, D, to which the hose E is secured, and horn band D. When the socket O is screwed into place its upper end is approximately flush with the bottom of the tank, and at the upper end it is provided with an internal screw-thread, into which a plug, F, is screwed, a packin g-rin g or washer, 0?, being interposed between the plug and the socket.
My improved attachmentis very advantageous for many reasons. The hose E serves to conduct all the wash-water to the sewer and prevents its running over the floor of the room where the tank islocated. The socket 0, being flush with the bottom of the tank, may serve to draw out all the beer if the hose be removed-a result which is not accomplished where the beer is drawn out through a faucet in the side of the tank.
The tanks are often arranged one over another upon suitable frame-work, and this attachment enables the upper as well as the lower tanks to be washed out without splashing or scattering the wash-water about.
The attachment can be applied to any tank already in use.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a metal socket adapted to be inserted into the bottom of a tank, a hose-eoupling fitted to the outer or lower end of the said socket, and a plug screwed into the inner or upper end thereof, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the socketU, provided with internal and external screw-threads, and having the collar a, the hose-coupling fitted to the lower end of said socket, and the plug F, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
JOHN BAUER.
