Description

CARRYING RECEPTACLE Filed June 25, 1951 INVENT 0R. MELVIN GOTTESMAN ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 6, 1951 CARRYING RECEPTACLE Melvin Gottesman, New York, N. Y., assignor to Mel-TonfBags,.Inc., New York, .N. .Y., acorporation of New York .ApplicationJuneZS, 1951, Serial No.2335'393 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to a oarryingreceptacle which is illustrated for example by a handbag.
Heretofore, in carrying receptacles such as handbags, pouches, purses and the like carriedin the hand, the frames therefore were'not concult and expensive to manufacture.
In the present invention, I contemplate the provision of a handbag and the like in which the members forming the handle-are connected -to the members forming the frame of the pouch or compartment of the handbag.
Further, in the handbag and the like-embodying my invention, the handle itself forms a,lock to the pouch or compartment of the bag so that it cannot be opened so long as the bag is carried in the usual manner by the handle. Therefore, the handle constitutes a safety catch against inadvertent and unknowing opening of the bag, as by pick-pockets.
The present invention therefore contemplates the provision of a handbag and the like in which the frame, handle and lock constitute a unitary structure instead of the separate and individual unconnected members of prior handbags and the like.
The present invention contemplates the provision of a handbag and the like which is of a comparatively simple construction and which is relatively inexpensive to manufacture and assemble.
'These, other and further objects and advantages of the present invention will be clear from the following description and the drawing appended thereto, in which Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a handbag, pursuant to my invention, the handbag being closed Fig. 2 is a side view thereof, the handbag in partially opened condition Fig. 3 is a top plan view, the handbag in fully opened condition and one of the handle elements broken away and the fabric of the handbag at one side thereof also broken away to disclose a frame member.
Referring now to the drawing, the pouch or bag II], which may be made of any suitable material such as anyofabric, leather, beaded, straw, plastic, etc., and of any shape or form, that shown in the drawing being for illustration only, is'suspended at each side from the opposed frame members l2 and I4 formed preferably from metallic rods.
Each-edge of the handbag compartment it (see Fig. 3) is provided with a pocket open at each end so that the frame members or rods may be thrust therethrough with their preferably threaded ends extending outside thereof.
The handle of the handbag comprises the two members l8 and 2!! having thehorizontal elements, which'are grasped by the hand to hold the bag and which are bent to form at each endof the handle the downwardlyextending connecting elements 22 and 24.
These elements 22 and 24 are provided with suitable openings at their ends through which the preferably threaded ends of the frame members or rods 12 and I4 extend and are thus mounted on the frame membersor rods l2 and M 'at each end thereof so that they may be freely pivoted thereon when the bag is opened or closed, as I shall describe.
In order to hold the handle members l8 and 20 on the frame members or rods [2 and I4 and prevent the latter from inadvertently being removed from the pockets at the sides of the bag, I provide an suitable means such as the hexagonal nuts 26. 7
Intermediate the horizontal elements of the members [8 and 20 and the openings at the lower ends of the downward elements 22 and 24, I connect the latter together by the pivot pins 28 and 30.
As an inspection of Figs. 2 and 3 will indicate the elements 22 and 24 are disposed crosswise of each other and when the carrying receptacle is open, the horizontal elements l8 and 2|] are located on opposite sides of the frame members 12 and M to which they are connected.
A will be seen, the handle members are articulatedly connected with the frame members so that opening or closing the handle correspondingly opens and closes the frame or carrying receptacle.
The pivot pins are provided in any satisfactory manner, as by peening, with heads to prevent the pins from inadvertent removal from their positions.
If desired, in order to assist opening the bag, the side tabs 32 and 34 may be provided along each upper edge of the pouch or bag l9.
In order to close the bag, one of the horizontal handle elements or members I8 and 20 is positioned under the other where it is preferably frictionally held.
In order to accomplish this function, the downward elements 22 and 24 are rotated about the pivot pins 28 and 30.
This movement moves the corresponding frame members or rods I2 and I 4 toward each other, since the open ends of the downward handle frame members are pivoted on the frame members, thereby closing the pouch or bag I Q,
So long as the horizontal handle l en s) members I8 and are held bythel hand; the
pouch or bag I0 is held "closed and cannot be opened without the consent of the holder.
mand a pair of inverted substantially U-shaped members, the legs of one of said members interse'cting the intermediate portions of the corresponding legs of the other U-shaped member and being pivotally connected at the point of in- To open the bag, the handle'isv released and the frame members or rods l 2 and I4 pulled apart or separated, as by the side tabs 32 and 34, though it will be understood that the side tabs are not required for this purpose since the horizontal elements or members may themselves be moved apart. Opening of the carrying receptacle may also be accomplished through the manual separation of the horizontal elements 18 and 20.
Separation of the horizontal members or elements will pivot the downward elements 22 and 24 about the pivot pins ZB and through the intermediate position illustrated in Fig. 2' into the fully open position illustrated in Fig. 3.
This separation of the handle elements, since they are pivotally mounted on the frame members or rods l2 and I4, forces the latter apart to open the pouch or bag Ill thereby making acgcessible the interior of the compartment is of the handbag.
It will now be recognized that I have provided an articulated connection between the handle and the frame of a carrying receptacle, such as a handbag or the like so that corresponding movement of the handle members will open and close the bag or the like and which handle constitutes a lock therefor. f
It will now be further recognized that the handle, frame member and lock constitute a tersection, the free ends of the legs extending outwardly and being secured to the outer ends of the respective rods, whereby the top of the bag will beclosed when the U-shaped members are brought together and disposed in substantially the same plane, the crown portions of said U-shaped members forming a carrying handle for the handbag, the le portions of one u -shaped member above the pivot points for said members, being shorter than the corresponding leg portions of the other U-shaped member.
