SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,266, dated May 2, 1882.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JosEPII W. ALLISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State ofOhio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Table-Leaf Supthe construction and arrangement of devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view of a part of a table-frame and a hinged leaf, the supporting devices being in position to retain the leaf in a horizontal plane. Fig.2 shows the lcaflowered and the bracket in section. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the latch; Fig. 4, aback View in elevation of thebracket I detached from the 2 leg-frame; Fig. 5, a detail view of latch, showin g the groove.

The frame-work ot' the table, embracing the rigid top A, hinged leaf B, and leg-frame 0, may be made in any ordinary manner.

D represents a curved brace pivoted to the bracket I, and provided on the lower side of its free end with a recess, N, which terminates in a hook, c, and on its upper side with a stop, a. The brace may be pivoted in any ordinary manner; but I prefer the simple means shown in detail at Fig. 4, which allows the bracket to be cast in one piece and the pivot-pins Mto be cast on the end of the brace. When pivoted in this way I enlarge the end of the brace so as to form shoulders P P, which impinge against the bracket and prevent the pivot from wearing the wood.

F is a bracket attached to the hinged leaf to form a seat and guide for the latch E and protection to the spring L. I prefer to make this bracket in one piece, with slots G above the pivot point of the latch for the purpose of allowing the latch to be introduced with its pivot= pins H cast on it. This bracket is provided with alug or projection, d, with which the stop c on the curved arm engages when the leaf is sufficiently elevated, and effectually stops the movement of the arm, so as to allow the look ing devicesto take effect; and, further, itprotects the hinges against accident from careless handling. p

The lock-latch E is provided with two pins, H, which pivot in bearings in the slots G of the bracket F. It, is also provided with an arm,g, to which one end of the spring L is connected, the other end being connected to the leaf. It is also provided with a groove, S, made to fit the brace which slides through it.

In Fig. 1 the devices are shown locked. Outvward pressure on the latch E will cause it to 5 take the position shown in Fig. 2 and allow the leaf to descend, and as it does so the brace will travel through the groove until it assumes the position shown in Fig.2, the latch acting as a brake during the movement. By raising the 7 leaf it will travel in the opposite direction untilchecked by the stop 07, when the spring, operating the latch, will cause it to turn into the recess M on the end of the brace and there securely lock it.

I am aware that a curved brace has been provided with a notch at one end and combined with a pivoted latch to lock the brace when the table-leaf is raised to a horizontal position, and therefore I do not wish to be understood 30 as broadly claiming such devices; but

What I do claim as my invention is- 1. The combination, with the curved brace D, pivoted at one end to the leg-frame of the table and provided at its outer end with a re- 5 cess, N, of the bracket F, secured to the under side of the hinged table-leaf, and the depending latch E, having its upper end pivoted in the said bracket beneath the curved brace and serving to support the latter in its movements, 9 and also to engage the notch in the outer end thereof to lock the brace in position, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination, with the curved brace D, pivoted at its inner end to the leg-frame of the table and provided at its outer end with the recess N, hook c, and shoulder c, of the bracket I secured to the hinged table-leaf and provided with the projection or lug d, and the depending latch E, having its upper end piv- I0) oted to the bracket beneath the curved brace, and serving to support the latter in its movements and to engage the recess and hook thereof to lock said brace in position, substantially 5 as described.

3. The combination, with the curved brace D, pivoted to the leg-frame of the table and provided atits outer end with a recess, N, of

thebracket F, secured to the hinged table-leaf, 10 the depending latch E, having its upper end pivot-ed to the bracket, and provided with an arm, 9, and a spring, L, connected at one end to the said arm and at its other end to the table-leaf, said parts being arranged to operate substantially as described. 15
